    We 'heel in' trees, shrubs and even perennial herbaceous plants every fall. This very simple system, which is basically communally planting in good garden soil for the winter and then pulling plants early spring before they wake up and either selling them, potting them, planting them out or giving them away, has worked incredibly well for us for years and years and years.
    Sometimes simple solutions can do amazing work in our lives!!!

    Edible Acres is a full service permaculture nursery located in the Finger Lakes area of NY state. We grow all layers of perennial food forest systems and provide super hardy, edible, useful, medicinal, easy to propagate, perennial plants for sale locally or for shipping around the country…

    Great idea Sean, I've noted you doing this in numerous past videos too. I suppose this works with smaller numbers of woody characters as well. Like a dozen or less?

    Going to do this today with our saplings. We just cleaned up and buried our raised beds with leaves and the new trees would love to be heeled into a spot!

    I've got mine in pots, have to surround them with either hay or wood chips to keep them happy. Healing in works better, but I forget to move them all in the spring and end up with huge black locust everywhere 😂

  • @xX4estXx
    @xX4estXx Před 10 měsíci +1

    Question: will letting them grow where they've been planted from seed all winter make it more difficult or better come spring replant. Healing in? Or growing where started? I don't have as many trees as you so it's easy enough to identify and dig up. Which is better?

      I am wondering something similar. What are the advantages of heeling in in fall rather than uprooting in spring from ground beds?

    • @edibleacres
      @edibleacres  Před 10 měsíci

      You can definitely leave plants in the ground overwinter where they grew.

    • @xX4estXx
      @xX4estXx Před 10 měsíci

      @@edibleacres is it more difficult to dig roots in spring? Do you think there is more or less chance of tree surviving?

    I have about 250 Harbin pear seedlings ready to go in. We still didnt plant our garlic, we have 85 lbs harvested this summer. Do you soak your garlic with peroxide? We had a bad mite infestation. How the pregnancy going?

    • @edibleacres
      @edibleacres  Před 10 měsíci +1

      We don't soak our garlic we just plant :)

    I'm curious if this method would be applicable in a warmer winter climate. I'm in USDA zone 8b and our winters just don't get that cold. Would my trees be at risk of breaking out of dormancy and taking root in a clump before spring repotting?

  • @theredl
    @theredl Před 10 měsíci

    How long would you say could bare root plants be standing just in water where you soak them before it might get critical for them? About how many days in general for the average trees, except for willows or the similar?

    • @edibleacres
      @edibleacres  Před 9 měsíci

      I wouldn't leave them for more than 1 day

    I got some cuttings (elder,current, josta) from silver run forest farm and stuck them straight in nursery beds and mulched in early November. Will they be ok all winter and sprout in the spring?

    • @edibleacres
      @edibleacres  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Really should be, that approach is what we do quite a bit and we've been very happy with results so long as generous mulch is applied
