The problem with UFC now is that they don't need stars anymore like they did previously. Cause their deal with ESPN guarantees them money for a certain amount of content per year.
Now they don't need to build stars.
It's like an old saying: "You work for a name and then your name works for you".
Unfortunately for UFC their name is nothing if the top fighters are not interested in them and want to leave. That's just one of big bunch of problems UFC's facing.

My belief is that the UFC/Endeavour knows that the sport will eventually have the Ali Act extended to the sport and their trying to squeeze as much money as possible from the sport before it happens. What killed it for me is the double pay wall for anyone outside the US.
I'm not paying monthly and then again for a ppv. Pick one. Ppv in Australia is 85 dollars now if you include the ESPN 15 a month.
I don't watch any other sport bar MMA, none so I don't need espn plus. They wonder why pirating went through the roof .....that's why.
People feel like they are being double dipped. So I don't watch them live anymore, I wait for the highlights. And I am not the only one I know that was a die hard fan who now is just as casual. Man I use to be able to rattle off stats like crazy for fighters before the epsn deal....after it I couldn't tell you who's coming at all. So you are correct...people who use to be hardcore fans have faded away. It's a slow decline but I've seen it. I know blokes here in Australia who has podcasts about MMA and they stopped after the ESPN deal because it became cost prohibitive to watch them.

To be fair fighters should promote themselves too.
Most of them don’t share their stories or have bland personalities. When everyone’s goal is “I want to be the best. The champion” you’re just another guy.
Khabib never resorted to dirty trash talk, never changed personality, but he is known.
Charles Olives is a humble gentleman, but he is known.
They shared their stories and personalities in social media.
Hype and knowing who the fighters are plays a huge part between “this card is stacked!” And “boring card”.
Pantoja won the title recently, and tbh nobody gave a fook other than hardcores and Brazilians. He has a beautiful story, he’s a BMF, but nobody knew or cares until after he won.
The wrestling comparison brings controversy, but letting the fans know you, your “gimmick” (personality) is important.
Add in the recent changes to the rules today, fighters being a little more open, a better pay structure, and the future could be amazing. Fingers crossed.

DJ was traded for an undefeated Askren who won titles in Bellator and OneFC. People really wanted to see what Ben Askren could do in the UFC even though he was aged and had surgeries. Fans were complaining about the Flyweight division as DJ didn’t have any competition (This is something fans usually do when there is a dominant champ) and the UFC wanted to cut the division.
Now as to Stipe he just came at the right time when the roster had zero wrestlers and aging fighters. The bar is so low with Stipe having defended his belt 3 times and lost it twice, people really call this guy the GOAT

    • @AceTheCap823
      @AceTheCap823 Před 8 měsíci

While I get what you’re saying (the NFL unlike the NBA prioritizes the shield over players like how the UFC prioritizes itself over fighters) but it’s not the same at all.
The NFL is an alliance of 32 different multi billion entities that operate under a unifying charter and each of those teams market their own players (and some players become big enough to be promoed by the NFL itself to an extent). Even then, the NFL has began prioritizing marketing stars in recent years much more so than previous years because they understand that’s better for growth and building/expanding a base. Also, there’s a players union in the NFL.
