Though arguably one will only _really_ benefit from 3D Printing if they're somewhat versed in doing their own 3D Models and understanding the limitations of the technology. Like him accidentally snapping off a part of those white Risers @06:51 because he printed parts of them in an orientation begging for this to happen ( should have sectioned the Parts to all be 3D Printed Flat and then join them together for a) faster Print Speeds AND b) higher rigidity ). But otherwise... Yea 🤔 3D Printing pretty much *_IS_* a game changer for many hobbies... @@r.kapaun01 Nobody's saying 3D printing doesn't contribute to microplastics. But the scale at which people are producing (and discarding) plastic models isn't comparable to mass retail and injection-mold products. You're buying spools of plastic, usually PLA, that are known to have less environmental impact to produce. Studies are still being conducted to assess how PLA microplastics affect the environment, but we already know what other plastics (ABS, PVC, PET, etc.) do. It's like complaining people don't recycle enough when industrial waste dwarfs the amount that consumers produce. Just do what you can to conserve your corner of the environment. That means getting BETTER at printing more efficiently (some techniques are already shared in the comments here), and seeking out 3D print brands that are environmentally-conscious (cardboard spools or recycled plastic spools, etc.).

Hot tip when you try to make something round grip something round:
Make the round thing you print slightly oval, that way it naturally flexes and gives more grip!

    • @longnamedude3947
      @longnamedude3947 Před rokem +1

You can also try to make it narrower at one end than the other by just 1-2mm on something that is around 50mm deep, that mixed with something like a surface with horizontal teeth to dig into the mating face can easy give you huge amounts of frictional grip.
Ultimately the best solution is to just design in a offset pin at some location around the outer edge of the rotating face, sometimes called a "Key" or "Key Block" or "Key Shim" and it just ensures that things stay exact in place, this can be used in conjunction with other techniques I've already mentioned & that others have mentioned to create a greatly secure fitment where needed.
You can also always use some additional "Thread-locking Compound" on the first 3-4 layers threads of what you are screwing together to help bind things nicely together, it acts as both a glue in itself and it expands and bonds to microscopic pores in the surfaces of the materials you are threading together to make a really tightly anchored fusing of both parts.
Make sure to get Thread-Locking Compound that is suitable for use on plastics or you may find that you melt the parts you have 3D printed.

As a 3D printing instructor at my school I agree with everything you said, The freedom to make and create things a 3D printer brings you is quite unbelievable, it allows you to fix everyday problems in just a few hours, in some cases even minutes.
The one tool I would highly recommend is a caliper, it allows you to measure things and by that take your 3D printers calibration settings to the next level, it also makes it much easier to make things like your steam wand knob to fit because you could measure the exact dimensions needed for the final part

I love the two arm phone holder. If you wanted to make the arms closer together, you should be able to do that by changing the angle of the cut of the notch. It's currently perpendicular to the side, but if you change that to something like 30 degrees, with the small angle facing the bit that holds your phone when looking at the face with the logo. This should result in the interior angle being 60 degrees instead of 90 degrees, bringing the arms together around a third of the current distance.

When going through iterations you should try isolating the part that actually differs, in the case of the steam knob you could have cut the model down to have just the part that touches the existing knob, this reduces the feedback loop massively as it prints a lot faster.

I've been doing 3D printing for about 5 years now and still design things just for myself regularly. I try to upload them when I have time and it's always shocking how many people need the same things, even if you don't think so.
For example, one of my most popular downloads in the first couple of years was a replacement knob for a 1970s washing machine.
It doesn't even have to be something complex. CHEP actually made a video about my spool holder for the old Davinci printers. I thought it was overly simple and would be unappealing because it didn't have moving parts, but apparently that was part of the appeal.
So upload everything you design that works, who knows what someone else might find useful too.

If you use multiple materials, do make sure you separate them out and label them clearly before sending them out to be turned back into filament.
Also - buy calipers if you're going to be making things that need exact dimensions. They're a godsend; you'll need to make less prototypes to get a good fit.
Also - be prepared to get a bunch of print requests from friends and family . . .

This is far FAR more interesting than watching pro 3D fuys print the same toys and junk over and over again but bigger and in fancy colors. I really hope this becomes a trend. I've been saying for years that we need to take tech people like 3D printers and laser cutter guys and mix it with old ladies who do crafts. "Hey Grandma, I printed a holder for your sewing needles." This is the adoption that we desperately need to start genuinely breaking down consumerism, make home manufacturing a viable alternative, and a regular part of our daily life. That is the promise of 3D we all wanted. This might sound a little over top but I genuinely mean this.

I made so many cool things while I was learning how to use it so our 3d graphic designer could learn it from me. I LOVE my 3d printers. They finally enable me to get so many of the ideas i have in my brain or into the real world. I've heard so many complaints that they're too complicated or to hard to learn to use but ANY time can be hard to learn to use properly but once you learn it opens up a whole new world. I've found so many people today are just too lazy to learn and work with the mindset of "I'll just pay someone to do it for me" but that always makes me think "what'll you do if there's no one who you can pay to do it?". Then again I'm the type of person who cannot justify paying someone to do something if I can do it myself.

You can print parts with fine threads with 3 methods. 1: print the hole slightly smaller than the screw and the screw will self tap. 2: print the hole to be tapped, using the recommended drill bit size for the hole’s dimension. 3: use a soldering iron and brass inserts. A $5 iron will work, but a fancy temp controlled iron is best so you can set it to your print temp and not run the risk of degrading the plastic.

if you are having problems with things just not quite fitting or being too sloppy then search for a setting called "Horizontal expansion" in your slicer, i'm not sure if all of them have it, but it all your prints are constantly coming up slightly too large or too small then you can tweak this setting, there are horizontal expansion testing prints you can do to fine tune it also!
when i found out about this it changed the quality of all my prints a lot!

I chose it because it's powerful and free, without the licensing issues and cloud requirements of the free versions of paid software. It is a bit difficult to get into, but once you're used to it it's very usable.

Great video, and nice to see someone using it as a real tool and not just as a project. Most projects I see on CZcams are about 3D printing stuff to improve the 3D printer and rarely anything other than that.
I would suggest that you cut out the features of your models to test if it fits, before you print the whole thing. If not, tweak the tolerances and when they are perfect, only then print the whole thing. I mean in you already found out that printing stuff that doesn't fit costs a lot of time and material. That way you cut down on both. You can also try testing things like overhangs and such. The only thing that is hard to do is estimating how likely and how much a part could warp (which can also happen with many PLAs, depending on the geometry).
Finally I would also suggest to at least try out Fusion 360 (or a similar program - but something that is commonly used). There are many beginner tutorials for it and it's free for personal use. With tinkercad many things will be a bit harder to achieve in the long run and some workflows aren't that intuitive. Once you get the basics of Fusion 360, it will become easier over time as you try more and more geometry tools and adapt them to your workflow.

I have been wanting to get a 3D printer for a while but didn't wanna drop $300 for a beginner printer at the time. Microcenter had a $99 Ender 3 V2 coupon 2 weeks ago though so I decided to drive 2 hours to my closest store and picked it up. I fucking love it. It's so cool to just print a statue or a clip or a little toy. It feels like you just make something appear out of no where lol
I'm extremely happy with my printer but the idea of someday getting a top of the line printer is really exciting. Being able to print in multiple filament colors, printing way faster, and getting even higher quality prints sounds amazing. Still need to learn Fusion 360 so I can make my own designs but I'm excited to eventually give that a shot!

Instead of soap and water, I suggest isopropyl alcohol between prints, and then every once in a while a splash of acetone. And if you're printing PETG, some windex after cleaning will help prints stick. I have spray bottles of all of them near my printer. Quick spray of the alcohol before a print, rubbed in with some paper towel, and the print bed is ready to go. (I have the Mini's big brother, the Prusa MK3S+.)

Autodesk meshmixer is a barebones model making software that is pretty good for 3d basic sculpting. The contrast surface stamping tool is really useful for adding words, letters, simple icons, or a texture etc. You will need to tweak the mesh to be more dense and conaistant, and It's not as capable as something like zbrush or blender but its pretty straight forward.
Other useful stuff you may or may not have stumbled across. Yeggi is a good search engine for stls free and priced. Desktop hero 3d has some mini modeling stuff. Used to have more free stuff but theres some assets still available that are free. I made a santa esque mini pretty easily. Hope that's useful. Cubic inner fill is also one of the best semi hollow infils for strength and tree supports can be very nice when they work well.
