  • I finally got a "proper" soaring day in the Paradise Valley just N. of Yellowstone National Park in my Bolkow Phoebus A1. It was AMAZING! And this was a relatively "modest" day, according to the locals. The corner of the canopy popped open in-flight, allowing a jet of cold air onto my L shoulder and face. By the end of the flight I was freezing cold, and ready to land. I'm still stretching my legs, so-to-speak, with cross-country soaring, and was always within glide of my take-off airport, thanks to the high thermals. So was this a "real cross-country soaring flight"? You let me know in the comments below.

It was fun editing the video, but even more fun collecting the footage. 😉

Hi John. Excellent flight . It must be quite rewarding to fly this classic glider that you restored. Watching enviously from fozen Canada

Thank you sir. A little inspiration for the warmer months, posted from frozen Montana. 😉

Great flight John. Yeah it's tough when 13k seems low, right?!

Thanks Target. Yep, at times 13K seems low. But learning to trust your flight computer and knowing you have glide back to your airport is very reassuring. But this comes with experience, and knowing you have the right data set in your flight computer.

Congrats on a nice flight! As you get more comfortable with XC soaring, you'll be able to take days like this and easily do 300-500kms. Was this your January 1st flight? If so, I'm surprised at how little snow is on the ground out there!

Thanks Noel. This flight was on 9/17/23. I’m really looking forward to more and longer XC flights. 🙂

Dear John. Nice weather, nice flight. I have got a Phoebus C, and I would like to ask how much force is on aileron when you deflect the ailerons?
I feel relatively big force on it in the air. On the ground easy to move. Thank you very much! Best regards, Szabolcs

You may notice I often fly with both hands on the joystick. This is for two reasons: elevator is very pitch-sensitive and light, so this gives me more control. The ailerons are quite heavy in flight. I would say it is similar to the G103 I have flown-light elevator, heavy ailerons, just more so. The rudder is also very heavy and responds slowly, but once it starts to respond, it is a big response. It is a big rudder on the Phoebus.

What software did you use to render the flight path?

I did a video screen capture from WeGlide 3D flight replay. One of the features that the SSA makes available to us through the partnership with WeGlide.
