This reminds me of all the horror stories I use to hear 20 years ago. In Australia a lot of people were heading to Bali or Thailand to get cheap cosmetic/plastic surgery done. Might be a good place for someone to start. And yes they were BOTCHED surgeries that people who did that from Australia can't do anything about, because they had it done outside the country.

I was attacked by a dog when I was around 5-7 and my cheek was bitten off. I was worked on by a brilliant plastic surgeon who sewed me back together and you wouldnt be the wiser to the fact I was a dog attack victim unless I pointed it out the small scars. I have never had any other work done, but I am very grateful to that man for letting me live a normal life post attack.

I had my eyelid torn off and my jaw chipped by a GSD on my 11th birthday. I had two surgeons (one retired after my case) and a medical student perform my surgery (& I never forget the student because he found my tear duct to repair it when nobody else could see it which meant I didn't need another surgery). Your story reminded me of my own. It was like magically getting my face back. One of my eyes is ever so slightly different but nobody would ever notice unless I pointed it out specifically, too. I am forever grateful. Everything works now and you'd never know looking at me just how bad it was. Some people don't even believe my eyelid was torn off! The skill that must have taken is just so incredible. Plastics saved my face too!

Split my forehead open and saw a great plastic auger on, then split my chin open years later (I was/am a klutz).. I was basically outside of his house when I fell,off my bike, he stitched me up in his kitchen 😂
I literally experienced the exact same thing, down to the scars being small lol I’m pretty sure I was 8, though. I’m really happy it hasn’t really affected my self image.
I am Navajo and grew up on the Rez and the older you are the more cherished and respected you are with age becomes wisdom and that’s very important to us .

“Kim” is a common surname in Korea, which many people know is a country that is known for being the capital of plastic surgery (not proud of this aspect of my country, as a Korean, but that’s besides the issue). People from other Asian countries will travel to Korea to get plastic surgery because Korea has a reputation for “high quality” procedures (not saying that there aren’t sketchy Korean plastic surgeons and clinics - that’s a whole other deep dive). It would seem using the Dr. Kim name was a bit of a bait-and-switch tactic that would get potential clients looking for a Korean surgeon, but then getting a ghost surgeon in China. Ghost surgeons in plastic surgery is a whole rabbit hole to dive into where people have actually died.

There is alot of (animosity?) Between china and korea. china helps N Korea mostly and also helped N korea in the war in the 50s. My partner has a saying "copy is hobby for china" especially with Korean things. Theyve tried to say kimchi, hanbok, kpop, and various things came from them.
in America there are products in asian groceries that get put in the korean aisles and look korean like gochujang or doenjang or snacks but on the back theres Chinese writing and "made in china."
I do wonder if it is as you said a ploy for someone to think they are getting a Korean dr OR they are try to "build" their "surgery reputation " so whoever can also "claim" that too, or its some weird way of trying to tarnish their reputation in the cosmetic surgery area?

I dont remember And they like either use filters or surgery to look like these little "princesses" and are extremely pale. But they aren't middle aged so idk if thats whats happening here 🙁. 💯 I have a family member who gets mad when I say my age loud and proud....I'm 36. They feel it makes them feel old. Every day is a blessing. Some babies don't make it past 36 seconds 😢 .
I'm 67 & consider wrinkles my life battle metals, much like a war soldier wears on his uniform. Lol.
I've been seeing this attitude become increasingly talked about particularly among young online essayists, and I'm actually really happy to hear it grow more accepted and recognised.
After everything we're going through at younger and younger eras of our lives, it's probably very healing to realise that being able to keep aging means more time spent being able to grow wiser, more kind to ourselves and others, more time to just exist, take our time, and appreciate what is good around us. It really is a gift not everyone gets to experience. A lot of youth restrictions are more manufactured than many realise (eg, becoming "too old" to dress, talk about, enjoy the harmless things that make our lives personal and fulfilling)
I admit that I did used to have some of those anti-aging ideals we're often taught when I was a kid, but at least one thing I've always seen the beauty in is natural silver hair.
It feels like it could be a fairytale blessing in another timeline, to live so long your hair becomes metallic, that no matter what colour it was before we all get to experience such a thing eventually.

It’s possible you were not born yet , but I remember MTV News’ Kurt Loder interviewing Patty Smith. He asked her if she was self conscious about her grey hair! Her answer was “I have so many friends that have died too young, will never see great hair, that I’m thankful!” Paraphrasing her the point was not lost on me at age 9.

Ageing is seen as such a strange taboo these days! I understand having work done that gives you confidence but the amount of work people are getting done these days is madness to me. Women as young as 18 getting fillers and botox, just to have to keep getting it done as your skin will sag without it. By 30 some of these women will have the wrinkles of a 60 yr old if they can't financially maintain it.
This is such a powerful takeaway. Of course give this message in an appropriate time for people, but it is true that so many people have unfortunately lost their life before they were able to live it fully.
My MIL is terrified of aging, meanwhile I'm looking forward to my first gray hair. I told her that so many people didn't get to experience old age and it's not fair. I'm going to appreciate the amount of time I have on this earth ☺️

The worst part about this is everyone holding up these pics of real, actual, people and telling the world how bad they think they look. 1. That's cruel. 2. The pictures are being taken 7 days after surgery when everything is still swollen and sore. Pictures in a year will tell the real tale.
I agree I think the pics are immediately after. Once the swelling goes down they will look so different.

Yes, how so very sad that they've inadvertently become famous memes. I understand the need for the pics,, the valid criticism, but it's heartbreaking that these people , who may have liked their results, are being told (who knows how many times) that they look terrifying and their results are 'the worst'. 😢
This is why I constantly remind my grandmother that she IS beautiful. She has the money, time, low self esteem and resources to do that. We need to stop convincing people they aren't attractive by being their natural selves. Age does NOT decrease beauty at all. We need a self esteem lift, not a physical one.

A good haircut will also improve your look.
Just be well groomed and choose clothes that work for you - that helps withaut the risk to getting botched.

@@highasduck5282nope …since I’ve hit my 50’s I’m having so much trouble landing a job (I do contract work in administration). This year I’ve been interviewed a couple times by a panel of young people. On both occasions, these 20 something’s completely ignored my experience and I could tell they had no interest in employing me. After two months of not finding work, I finally got a contract last week, I didn’t even have to do an interview! They employed me based on my years of experience. The people in the office ended up being my age or older. So yes looking older does hinder your job prospects - especially with younger people who are often being ageist totally ignoring what you have to offer. I can’t afford to regularly have two months without work, so thinking I might get a facelift in Bali or Thailand. 😂

As someone who’s life expectancy is 50 (thanks vascular whalers danlos syndrome) it makes me sad to see people not celebrating getting older. I wanted to have a fucking block party when I found a grey pube 😂 no joke! I’m 38, I didn’t think I’d love long enough to see any grey hair ANYWHERE EVER. I wish people celebrated getting older as the accomplishment that it is, so many people don’t get the chance to grow old - and that is so sad.

Hey, my mum just turned 65 and hasn't had any vascular events for probably a decade (spontaneous subdural hemorrhage was her last major one in 2012?). She has vEDS. I guess in one way, it can be good to live life believing you have a limit of 50 years and therefore you dont waste a minute of it.. but I just wanted to reply and let you know they're just statistics, and you could easily break the rules like my mum :) Big e-hugs and take care.

I was born with Poland Syndrome, meaning half of my chest, the cells were basically dead, which in turn caused me to basically have 1 breast. I have a lot of health issues, physical and mental, but i never knew i could fix my breast issue basically for me because it was covered by insurance because my surgeon argued with them stating it was a health condition, mentally and physically.
Im so grateful to that surgeon and i do not regret the 6 surgeries it took to make them more even. My breasts arent perfect but theyre so close and I'm happy with them.
I also appreciate that no actual plastic was put into me. He just took fat and cells from my stomach and thighs. It took so many surgeries because in my early 20s i was pretty thin and he didnt wanna take too much.
I do not regret it at all.

Due to having Crohn's Disease since i was 19 (am now 62) which caused and still does cause chronic pain daily, chronic meds and multiple surgeries i look older than i am. It used to really bother me because i look older than all my siblings then a friend of mine told me that i shouldn't feel bad. According to him my wrinkles and scars are a badge of honour showing what i have been through and am still going through and that i haven't given up😊
Luxeria (UK) covered this from the perspective of a person who's had plastic surgery (ffs) & cosmetic procedures who also has a biochem degree & really explained what some of these procedures were or might be and also explained how/why this is way too much to have at once, and so forth.

When I was 4 I ran into a bookshelf and split my lids open. I went to a plastic surgeon, a friend of the family, where I got tons of tiny tiny stitches. Can’t even tell where the scars are.

When you said their body may reject the facial surgery, all I am seeing in my head is this scene from Repo: The Genetic Opera where Paris Hilton's face fell off.
I’m a survivor of dv/r/sa/m attempt by my ex husband. The last time he ever laid hands (etc) on me was the night he almost succeeded in his deliberate & pre-planned attempt to end my life.
I shouldn’t be here. I had been beaten so badly that the RCMP officers and even the EMS workers went white when they found me.
On top of all the rest of it, I also had extreme head and facial lacerations, most all the way to the bone (as well as severe TBI due to the multiple skull fractures).
I was blessed to have been taken care of throughout the next several years by one of the top plastic surgeon in my country who specialized in reconstruction. It’s been many, many years now, but the scarring has faded to the point of not being easy to see with or without makeup, although you CAN still definitely feel them.
So far he is still in jail. He’d likely have been out by now if he wasn’t still his own worst enemy…but I will ALWAYS be there in the room at every and any possibility of parole hearing to remind EVERYONE there of exactly what he did not only that night, but for the two years prior to that night (I’d managed to get (I thought) “safely” away from him for months before that but he had found me & had broken in to our new home that night).
“Doctors” like this MUST be stopped. It sickens me that this person has and continues to harm people.

When I was way younger, I always wanted to get my nose done. Unfortunately, I was hit square in the face/ nose with a wave runner when I was 17, and it broke my nose and have had to have several surgeries to try and fix my breathing after the 4th I have up for years. Thankfully, after the 5th and final one worked. After all the pain, I find it hard that I thought I wanted to do it for no reason when I was younger. I appreciate my nose now and am very happy I can actually breathe now. I hope everyone has a great day! 🙂 🤗🙃
I've had far too many surgeries for medical issues in my childhood to ever consider any sort of elective surgeries myself, but I think that there is a way in which these things can be done as safe and ethically as possible. I seem to remember hearing about a psychologist who specialized in body-based issues (dysphoria, dysmorphia, etc) setting up practice next to a plastic surgeon's office. They offered their services as a consultant to the plastic surgeon, and ultimately both practices saw huge increases in patient returns and positive outcomes because they were able to provide a level of due diligence not seen elsewhere.

I had a breast reduction surgery a few years ago and it literally changed my life. It was deemed medically necessary, (my surgeon was positive it would be approved by insurance, and to my surprise it was!), but I have no shame telling people I had plastic surgery. I had chronic migraines, couldn't excercise, wear proper clothing, it was so painful. After surgery, my migraines went away, got back to exercising once I was cleared, lost 30lbs and gained my life back.
We only ever hear about the Botox, BBL's and implants. Seeing some of the life changing things plastic surgery has done for people in the comments is heartwarming ❤️
I’ve been hemming and hawing about thinking about getting a reduction. I have arthritis in my spine that was diagnosed at 26 and can’t do anything prolonged with my arms cuz it causes back pain. But I’m terrified of having such a big surgery and how long the recovery would take.
@PhoenixRoseYT the first part of recovery is a bit intense, those first 2 weeks are really exhausting. Especially if you're not a back sleeper (that was one of the hardest parts for me). But the next 4-6 weeks were mostly just swelling and general sensitivity in that area for me. It's SO worth it, though! My mom also had the surgery (it runs in the family lol) and it was a big relief for her arthritis and chronic back pain.
I had a very early form of breast cancer and the only treatment was a single Mastectomy. I became cancer free on the OR table. I chose to stay flat, and may have the other breast removed for precaution and vanity. The most important part of this type of surgeon is to see your surgeons work. Mine was a perfectionist and my scar is utterly amazing and barely visible. If I was to get reconstruction it would be Diep Flap.

I actually wrote an essay last year using that same study from the medical accident group in response to an article written about the rate of regret in transgender surgeries. 65% vs 1%. and yet people keep trying to ban gender-affirming care as if there isn't significantly more harm being done in other medical practices. they don't actually care about protecting people, they just don't want trans people to exist.
The fact is Transgender people don't often regret surgical procedures because were doing it for ourselves & not for societal norms.
People even regret more necessary procedures like knee surgery more often than gender affirming surgeries. By the time you've scraped together the money for it, you know damn well that you want it done. But transphobes don't actually care about science :/

I have extremely pronounced glabellar lines between my eyes. I got tired of people asking if I was mad. So I got Botox, more Botox then fillers. That didn’t resolve them 100%. But I was happy with the results.
What I wasn’t happy with was everyone at the plastic surgery center pointing out that they could easily get rid of my crows feet. I declined.
I’m not saying I wouldn’t ever get anything more done. I’m 60. And my family tends to develop jowls. But I didn’t appreciate the constant pointing out of “flaws” in my face by strangers.

I had jaw surgery in 1998 (when I was 14) to overcome massive injury incurred to me due to physical abuse at the hands of my parents. I only bring this up as you talk about the body rejecting the surgery years later as mentioned in the video. In 2019, I noticed my lymph nodes were very swollen and my jaw was very sore. Turns out my jawbone itself was infected at the surgery site, suddenly 20 years later. Heavy antibiotics cleared up the issue, but surgeries, even necessary, can have long-lasting impacts to one’s body.
I would dearly love to have a neck lift, because my jaw muscles from the trauma are so weak that they sag and give me the appearance of a severe double chin (as explained to me by a plastic surgeon) which gives me shame and people stare, though it is far outside my price range. I know if I ever was able to do it, I’d have to prepare myself for potential complications later as well. I only wish to feel normal after what happened to me.

Had a cosmetic dentistry procedure done at 19 because I hated my front teeth. While I could financially afford it, I quickly realized I couldn’t mentally afford it. Spent several years with dysmorphia surrounding my smile. To this day I still have issues stemming from the stupid decision I made at 19. I chose a quick fix for an insecurity and regret it immensely. Cosmetic procedures are not the solutions people think they are unless they are medically necessary.
I have prosopagnosia and these after shots are genuinely distressing to look at.. they're not even registering in my brain as "human", which is even more deeply disturbing because I know that they are.
I do not have the same reaction to face transplants or even functional reconstruction.
I work at Ulta and i had a 16 year old ask me for a retinol recommendation literally yesterday. I was like girl, I'm 26, and am scared to use this stuff, and told her to use sunscreen. She did not like the answer. Not, even the first time i've had this happen in the last week or so. It's sad.
With the rise of these kids wanting anti aging creams and whatnot I feel like a rule should be put in place at makeup stores to not sell them those things and have employees recommend more age appropriate things.
retinol can be used for acne treatments also, not just anti aging. i would hope you would know that if ur supposed to be educating people on what to buy
Girl, what? You work at Ulta and you don’t know that retinol is literally used for acne as well?. At 16 years old I was prescribed a retinol cream because I just got off of Accutane. A lot of dermatologist prescribe/recommend a retinol for acne. In fact, it is only thing that saved my acne. No joke. Worked wonders on my skin. Had the best impact on my acne scars. Be for real.
If you were to say that to me, I would look at you blankly as well. Honestly, I would probably say girl shut the hell up and give me my retinol.😂😂😂😂 no offense, but you work at Ulta. You are not a dermatologist. Just give them what they ask for literally it’s not your job to diagnose them. 16 is not that crazy of an age for retinol, since puberty is really when acne starts to spike. .. You should be more concerned about the literal 9 to 12 year olds attempting to get them/ wanting to get them
@@ashlyndawson9521 no for real… since when have Ulta members been dermatologist? 16 is not a weird age for retinol at all. Specifically since 16 is usually after you hit puberty and when acne is getting pretty bad. Retinol saved my skin for real.😂😂😂

I've worked in surgery for 8 years now. Doing everything from trauma to plastics, and you couldn't convince me to get elective surgery at this point.

I think my only real fear of ageing is the visually representation of my increasingly limited time still left on this planet. As an Atheist, dying terrifies me but not because of the act of dying itself. I have so many hobbies, and so much I want to accomplish in my extremely limited human life, and because I was born with an autoimmune form of arthritis, which egged on my other 3 autoimmune diseases, I'm unwell so often that I generally can't do much with my time already, as it is.
So getting older is the visual representation of the most stressful thing in my life, not having enough time to accomplish what I want to.
The after faces look like what I imagine the post-OP faces in the Uglies series to look like.
That being said, true plastic surgery is a blessing.
My fiance was in an awful car wreck (when his ex kicked him in the face with her stiletto - while he was driving - but that's another story) and he very much had to get reconstructive surgery because his face was split open. I'm all for doing what makes you happy and/or healthy but this is just out of hand. Thank you as always for shedding light on these topics and welcome to the sus pool, doc - must be getting crowded in there 😂

You need to do a deep dive into the plastic surgery world, there are so many stories of body dismorphia disorder and the extreme plastic surgery people go through to achieve an unattainable image. Can't wait for the oli London documentary

I had a lower face lift in my mid 40's. It was intended to firm up my jaw line. It was wonderful. I went to a reputable doctor and hospital. I get injectables around my mouth once per year to soften the puppet lines. Again, only at a reputable clinic. It makes me happy. People should do what they want to their bodies, but please do check out the credentials of the doctors and have reasonable expectations.

Well, there is a limit to what you can get done. Ollie London is a good example, all the doctors he saw in the UK told him that getting anymore plastic surgery would be a bad idea and wouldn't get him the result he wanted and could possibly be bad for his health. They refused to do the procedures he wanted. He intentionally ignored their warnings and went to another country to find a doctor that would agree to the surgeries. It's why his story about "no one stopped me" is so disingenuous. Doctors did try to stop him, he ignored them and shopped around until he found someone who wouldn't stop him.

So I had a lower body lift and tbh the consults I went on varied dramatically -- some surgeons were very thorough and detailed, others barely spent any time with me. For recommendations, some provided only their opinion on "what I needed", some only asked what I wanted and the surgeon I went with asked what goals I had and recommended a surgical plan that aligned with my overall goals. The entire experience was incredibly eye opening re plastics. Basically depending on the surgeon, I could have gotten whatever I wanted 🤷🏻♀️
Markets have supply after demand, so drawing a line on what people can get done (in the legal market) will most likely get more customers over in the illegal market. Its a very slippery slope. That is probably especially true here since cosmetic surgery is something people do when they already are willing to go to extreme measures for change. We already see that with people who can't afford the procedures going to cheaper (often less safe) countries to do it when they can't afford it at home.

On the day my brother was born, three weeks before my 2nd birthday, toddler me ran headfirst into my aunt’s glass living room table and sliced my face open. It’s a miracle that I didn’t lose my left eye.
The doctor who worked on me was apparently one of the best plastic surgeons in the city. Thanks to him, all that was left of that accident was a tiny scar on the corner of my eye, small enough that most people can’t see it unless I explicitly point it out.
Considering how small I was when it happened, it could have been much, much worse, and I’m so grateful that 1) I didn’t lose my left eye, especially since I already need glasses and my lefty is the stronger eye, and 2) I had such a skilled and talented plastic surgeon to help toddler me.
Botox for migraines was a life changer for me. I've had it done for about two years now and my migraines have been reduced from 5x a week to 1x a week or fewer. The newer injectable treatments aren't covered by my insurance unfortunately, so I'm sticking with the botullism for the forseeable future 🤷♂️🙃.
I get it in my jaw to stop clenching, it’s saving my teeth from more damage and I face doesn’t hurt all the time. I really don’t want to ever stop, teeth are 1000% worth saving and it’s infinitely better than taking pain killers all day.
I get it for migraines too - it is a life changing treatment. I get injections in the normal headache places, but my provider doesn't waste what's left over : I get shots in my jaw muscles, shoulders, and that stupid knot everyone has under the scapula of their dominant hand side. Life changing!

@@caustic1611 get the jaw and scapula if you can! During the Pandemic I started clenching my jaws without knowing it. My jaw muscles are super strong but I also worry about teeth. One thing clenching did is stop my jaw pops and clicks and getting stuck. Eating was awful with that going on.

I had a breast reduction done in 2018 (best decision of my life) and one of the biggest reasons I felt good about getting that done was that breast reductions come with the highest percentage of patient satisfaction of like, any cosmetic surgery.
I'd be interested to know, though, whether this kind of procedure is more often considered cosmetic or plastic surgery. My reasons, for example, were about equal parts aesthetic and medical (reducing the risk of back pain and other issues), but there are certainly people who get it done fully for one reason or the other.
Ive been seriously considering this the last couple of years! Ive lost over 100lbs without surgery but im so damn ridiculously top heavy (upon already having broad shoulders), i still see the me that i was before. Im migraine sufferer due to a head injury & i have back problems.
I wanna age . I wanna see my little girl grow. I wanna see my preschoolers that i teach progress and flourish. I wanna see where life takes me even if it hasnt always taken me to the brightest places. Ages 14-22 i spent hating my life and brain and battling whether i wanted to be here another day. But fuck that , i wanna continue, grow & age daily.

I had a rough childhood. My twenties have also been a struggle. I’ve had the lowest of lows a few times now and more than contemplated doing the unthinkable. I’m 3 months shy of my 30th birthday and it honestly feels like I’m crossing a finish line. Like, if I can just make it out of my horrible 20s things will start to look up. I hold onto that on my bad days. I hope I keep growing up and getting older. While it’s all a matter of preference, standing and looking over the edge of your own life makes you thankful for wrinkles and gray hairs.
I have nothing but cats on my FYP and that's how I like it!

I was born with a cleft lip and palate and had to have several plastic surgeries growing up. I had my last surgery at 17, and based on that experience I cannot imagine sharing what I looked like just three days after surgery due to my entire face being swollen and bruised to the point where I was unrecognizable. Any pictures taken then wouldn't have been a good representation for how the surgery went. I also can't imagine being capable of giving any kind of informed consent post-surgery about after pictures. I was in lots of pain, I was hyped up on pain meds, and I was delirious with sleep from the 6 hours of anesthesia. In fact, I was so out of it that one day while recovering I accidentally opened the door for some Jehovah's witnesses and proceeded to have a whole ass convo with them that I later had no memory of and was only reminded when they came back a few weeks later. It wasn't until week 2 of recovery that I felt that I was getting somewhat back to "normal".
That's what I was thinking. 3 and 7 days post-op are not your final results. There is a lot of swelling and bruising. I would like to see what these people look like in 3 to 6 months
Breast implants or breast reduction are electove and cosmetic, a mystecyomy for cancer is reconstructive and covered by insurance.
A nose job is elective and cosmetic surgery, a nose reconstruction from frostbite is plastic surgery.
The difference is huge education wise.

I think this topic is interesting for me as a trans person. I plan on getting several surgeries. I know a lot of people in my community have had surgeries or plan to and are extremely happy with them. The state I live in requires all insurance companies to cover gender affirming care including surgeries so I’m able to get access to surgeries that for anyone else would be considered cosmetic and they’d have to pay out of pocket for. Im glad to live in a state that recognizes the necessity of these procedures for trans people, but I think everyone should have access to these procedures. Being trans I know what it’s like to feel uncomfortable in my own skin and I don’t wish for anyone to feel trapped the way I felt trapped.
My feelings about my own surgery are a bit complicated tho. I definitely want my face to better reflect my gender but I also try to consider how much my idea of that is influenced by beauty standards. It’s hard to find the line between wanting to look feminine and wanting to fit ideal beauty standards.

A tip my therapist gave me to help sort through some of my feelings about gender being reflected on my face (I'm cis but bullying fucked me up and messed with my sense of my own body). She encouraged me to look at my family members of my gender and find the things that aren't tied to gender that reminded me of them. It helped me reconnect to my gender which is obviously super different than transitioning to yourself but I hope it helps. I have the same earlobes as my aunts and grandmother. I have my mother's nose. Things like that. The behavior of comparing myself to other expressions of feminity was super difficult to kick but looking closer to home helped ease me out of it a little.
I hope whatever you decide to do for yourself goes well. Know that you are enough as you are and choosing to be more yourself can sometimes be the best choice you can make for yourself, surgery involved or not. ❤
The thing about Professor Douglas' claim about Disney portraying elderly female characters is that what they don't seem to realize is that Disney didn't create these characters. They just adapted them from fairy tales. Maybe I'm missing something and speaking out of turn but I just feel like a lot of people seem to forget that a lot of Disney's movies are adaptions from fairy tales that were already written. I mean don't get me wrong, Disney has their own problems but unless I missed something, I'm pretty sure the way they portray elderly women isn't their own doing.
It's true, humanity has demonized old women for hundreds of yeas if not longer... Especially if they were any kind of financially stable. Just look at "witches."
Plastic surgery regulations have always been an issue because most surgeries are elective and are done to make the patient feel better. Most reputable doctors will have you talk to your primary care doctor and do not only physical checks but mental checks. Body dysmorphia is extremely common today. If a doctor is pushing you to do an elective surgery or pushing you past what you want to do, then it is time to see another surgeon. Medical providers when it comes to ethics will generally follow the 7 rights of medication rule

Being someone who is Black and trans, but has also lived with debilitating BDD (body dysmorphia disorder) their entire lives, I fully understand the need to have surgery as a process to physically and psychologically affirm one’s gender, as well as the societal pressure to appeal towards Eurocentric beauty standards, it’s very interesting to see how normalized plastic surgery is in many areas of Asia, and is seen as more societally acceptable than it is in the west.
Typically, Black people (especially Black celebs/influencers/etc) will be pressured into getting plastic surgery, and almost always in the direction of getting rid of any African features (broader noses, sharper eyes, contouring, etc) in favor of highly favored Eurocentric and Asian beauty standards which almost always run parallel to to one another except with a few exceptions (likewise how there are Asian people who opt for more Western looks, and white people who opt for Black or Asian features).
Which is really, REALLY fascinating, especially from the perspective of being a Black woman (and a lil infuriating ngl), because the majority of cosmetic surgeries in today’s mainstream society and media basically show white women doing their best to emulate Black women-bbl’s, lip fillers, hair texturizes/Black hairstyles, skin darkening (and who could forget the Blaccent), etc-
Whereas Black women are still very much shamed, mocked, fired, degraded, and so forth, when we possess these features naturally.
And even now so to the point where Black women are actively looking to emphasize their African features even more, typically with body augmentations and lip fillers to emphasize already full lips, often because they were told (and as is portrayed in Black media, and something I was told often) that we don’t “look Black enough”.
Thats why it breaks my heart to see it in reverse; when a Black woman will completely lighten her skin, straighten her hair, thin her lips, etc, to look like a white woman (I’m specifically referencing the tragic case of Lil Kim-a beautiful Black woman who was groomed and severely abused as a teenager and adult, and was pressured to get plastic surgery to hopefully fix all of the physical damage her many abusers caused her, as well as the anti-Black and coloristic degradation she faced for being a dark-skinned Black woman.
But to see her go from this beautiful, stunning, melanated queen to basically pulling a Michael Jackson (another victim of Eurocentric beauty standards, anti-Blackness), and I completely blame this society for driving her to such an extreme. 🥲
I won’t lie I’ve never understood the “anti-aging” craze. I am an activities director in a skilled nursing facility, and I absolutely adore our elderly 💚💜 these wrinkles and sags are the physical signs of our wisdom and time on this earth, and every one is precious. The crows feet at your eyes means you smiled and laughed a lot in life, the forehead wrinkles are a reminder that we’ve concentrated and focused on many things and have the wisdom to show for it, each one tells many stories and each one is beautiful just like the souls that give these shells their lives and personalities. There was a time when the elders of society were revered and respected because they had lived and experienced the very things the young were asking them advice about and idk when we lost that 😢 but it needs to come back. Beauty is so much more than skin deep and to every soul, you are beautiful, you are valid, and you are loved 💜💚

I had my tongue pierced when I was 16, and when I turned 23 all of a sudden my tongue was like NO! and started splitting along the hole. I had to take it out because it was literally cracking my tongue into two. I never knew why because I hadn't changed material, I cleaned it regularly. Until one day I googled and found out ohh yeah your body can just have a response years later. It never healed back perfectly so now I just have a crack along my tongue.

Edit: Stephanie Soo did a video on ghost doctors, doctors who operate as the face of cosmetic surgery clinics in order to book people in, and when people are under anaesthesia another doctor or medical student will walk in to complete the surgery so that they can maximise the amount of surgeries being undertaken.
Personally, I'm really looking forward to the fashion chapters of my life. I lived in NYC for a time and saw some super fashionable silver haired ladies! I'm so inspired for my "granny" era because of them. I think beauty has many shades as you go through life. (More than just how fertile you look...) Aging is natural and old age can look beautiful too! I just want to experience the cycles of life naturally.

On the Disneyfication of the human experience, I noticed that HARD last year. I announced on social media that I survived the virus C-word (I almost didn't) and LITERALLY NOBODY SAW IT. Announcing to the world that I survived a harrowing experience got suppressed to the point that not a SINGLE person was shown it. Not even my friends and followers. Then my dad passed away and every time I try to talk about the grief, algorithms start treating me like I'm about to jump off a bridge! I can't talk about the grief and sadness even with my own friends and followers without fearing suppression. I also have been a self-harmer in the past. Unfortunately, the scars don't go away. But now nobody wants to see the scars because they don't want to be reminded of serious depression and CPTSD, so I get suppressed for existing. It seems like corporations don't want me even celebrating my own life and survival because it's not Disney enough.
I suffer from chronic migraines, and one of the more reputable treatments is botox in your forehead/scalp/neck and shoulders. I was 18 and my insurance paid for it no problem. 40+ injections in one sitting later, you could not PAY me to get botox for vanity reasons. I don't know if estheticians use a local anesthetic or what, but my neurologist didn't and I basically cried the entire time it hurt so bad (and it also had no effect on my migraines so I never had to do it again, thank dog.)
I suffer with migraines too, I've never heard of botox as a treatment for them, but I'm in the UK, I will question my doctor about this.
I had a septoplasty to fix my deviated septum which is technically plastic surgery. My ENT also does cosmetic surgery but I was so grateful he never even brought up doing a rhinoplasty at the same time. (Even though u have a larger than average nose)
That surgery brought me so much relief and I've stopped having chronic sinus infections.
This whole discussion reminds me of an episode from Bones were Dr. Brennan was upset about how much the victim changed her body down to the bone structures just to achieve an image of herself she was never able to reach. The victims bf said she would get the work done and then go right back to the mirror once she was healed and start the processes all over again despite being the most beautiful person in the room. Even the doc had to cut her off because she got addicted to the surgeries. It's a heartbreaking episode and all this just makes me think of it. I hope all the people who had the surgeries (if they aren't fake) either at least enjoy their results or are given a chance to reverse it for their mental states
Dr Youn is so legit I honestly love him so much. If I needed anything I'd head up to Michigan just for him.
Thr fact a lot of these are 7 days post op - where there is *so* much swelling, especially with the amount of procedures they've had done all in one operation, which is a lot.
But also, they were clocked by using filters on these individuals upon upload.
Not even to mention the rest of the mess in these situations.
Just wow.
People have also gone down a rabbit hole to find out *who* actually is Drm Kim? As they came up with *2* different people who are supposedly the surgeon!
So who is it? And why do they think it's ok to complete so many impactful & large procedures all in one operation session. Not ok.
This is just a bonkers story of the more sinister side of plastic surgery.

I am a healthcare provider and in one of the tenants of my education is patient autonomy. I cannot force a patient to get any proceedure or stop them from doing something I wouldn't recommend. Autonomy is a basic human right, so I'd say the issue lies less in the realm of allowing what the patients want and more so with being more selective with who is allowed to perform those things. My medical license is specific, as is the scope in which i am allowed to practice. It sounds like there needs to be more concise regulation on plastic/cosmetic surgery and more changes on the legislation of it all.

I have looked up the pros and cons for getting top surgery. I am scared to go through it, but having a flat chest will help my back and my mental health. I also got a hysterectomy after much consideration and it was the best choice ever. I no longer have to worry about cysts, cancer or having a period that makes me dysphoric. I am all for folks getting elective surgeries, but they need to do their research.

The problem is, as with everything we try to regulate, is that people will still find someone else to do the work. I have watched many, many hours of Botched and these people will get these crazy procedures done in other countries for half of what it would cost here, and then they want more. Take for instance the show Darcey and Stacey. Those women look nothing like what they should look like or what they used to look like and when surgeons and doctors here tell them that they won't touch them with the ten foot pole because their licenses could be suspended, well they merely get on a plane and go elsewhere. The surgeons in other countries do not have the same practices as they do in the States. Our surgeons won't touch some of these patients because they are on the extreme end of the spectrum. The idea is good, in theory, but it will never work because of the ability to go elsewhere for the surgery. It's sad that we even have to think about aging and what it means in an American society. George Clooney is praised for aging, gray hair, and wrinkles, but once Julia Roberts got them, well dye the hair and see a surgeon because we want you to look like you did in Pretty Woman which was when you were in your 20s. The conditioning of society is weird and mostly patriarchal and it is so sad that women are not held in the same light as men.
