That Rick had been gone a total of 9 years. Michonne finds Rick's things on a boat. We learn from Okafore that the items that Michonne found came from Ricks 3rd escape attempt. 5 years after the bridge where he chops of his hand is the 4th escape attempt, and joining the CRM in the 6th year after the bridge was his 5th escape attempt which failed again because of a child. Rick stops after that when he realises that Michonne and their family will be killed because Okafor knows where they are. Therefore, in the scene where he is flying the helicopter, and you see NOW on the screen. That is present day, which is 9 years after the bridge... Michonne has accidentally stumbled across Rick almost killing him.
