The Saw Blade Knife - How to Make a Knife from a Saw blade

- Thanks to Worksharp and the Drill Doctor for sponsoring this Saw Blade to Knife Build!
Today I'm building a custom knife from an old circular saw blade with no tempering required! In the video I go over how I cut out the knife blank from the saw blade, ground the blade profile, built the handle and sharpened it to an edge that will cut paper! This was a super fun build and hope it inspires you to make something new out of something old ;)
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Please go check out Worksharp Tools and the Drill Doctor!

That was therapeutic to watch. For anyone puttering around the house looking for something to do, this looks like a great project.
NSFW Harold thank you Harold!
Makes me wish I had collected all the old saw blades tossed when I was working construction
Charlie oh man...you had access to the mother load then! But I’m sure you can find a few laying around somewhere 😀👍
That turned out really well! The mesquite handle looks great, and I agree on the aesthetics of the hollow pins. Awesome job!
The Goode Life Outdoors thank you! Yes, I’ve liked the hollow pins for a long time! I think they are actually most commonly a budget thing for knife makers....but I like em!
@@homesteadonomics They're also more useful because of the spear thing :D
Thank you so much for this awesome video. It will be very useful to me.
Could you give me a link where to find those beautiful hollow pins ?
Thank you again
Patrick
Dude, that thing is friggin gorgeous.
John thank you so much!
I worked in a sawmill and made many knives for the mill workers. One day the boss told me to stop as one knife was pulled on someone at a pub the same day I made it. Haven't made one for many years now. Nice work, I may need to make one myself. Loved the hollow pin idea.
Smurphenstein oh man! You had access to some great steel then! I hope you were able to save a few blades😀👍
I know it’s 2 years later but I gotta say this. At your age, the reason for adding the hollow pins is the best damn reason to do it. Love your content. Greetings from 🇨🇦.
I been making Knives for years and you did an Outstanding Job on this Knife! I really enjoyed watching this! THANKS!
I really, really like how it turned out! It is so satisfying when an idea comes out so beautifully.
Blackberry Hideout thank you Sis!
Now that's what I call All American Craftsmanship
Thumps UP!!
thanks so much for checking it out RW!
That turned out really nicely.
Clearly the saw blade was bigger than I originally thought when I commented on Instagram. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wayne Crews thanks Wayne!!! It was a 10” blade....but the cold saw teeth make it look smaller I think 🤔
This brought me so much joy.
Your videos have been inspirational I pray for my family your family and all our families worldwide your friends in Scottsdale Arizona be safe fellow Arizonian God Bless
I love simple knives beautifully made. Well done.
I like how detailed your videos are, and I can learn from them. Thanks
Joe, you are very inspirational and of course very talented! You gave me the inspiration, now to work on my confidence.
John Reinburg thank you John! But don’t worry confidence is something that I still struggle with on projects. Anytime we do something that we haven’t done before or aren’t maybe super proficient at it is a little bit nerve racking. But I just try to take it one step at a time....which is easier said that done. But trust me, I feel it too! You’ll do great😀👍
Nice work I love the mesquite handle 👍👍
diegodog20270 thanks you! I really like mesquite as well! Plus it’s pretty much unlimited down here😀👍
This one was awesome! I have some saw blades that I have kept for this reason. But never quite knew how exactly to do this. Now I know. Thank you!
Tony Green That sounds like you’ve got yourself some projects waiting! Give it a go😀👍
Dude, I think it looks great 👍
C S thank you so much 😀🙏
I'm going to save my saw blades from now on! What a great way to repurpose something. Now I want to make a kitchen knife! Thanks for sharing sir.
That was very cool... I'm going to have to give it a try!
You are amazing! There’s nothing you can’t do!
Marcelle Bess aw, thank you Marcelle! 🙏😀👍
I dig that a lot. I may just have try it. I always stayed away from it because I thought you needed a forge. I have the same sharpener already and some old saw blades laying around. Thanks for the informative and educational video.
Love that you used Mesquite as your handle material. It's such an underrated and underappreciated hardwood. Highly resistant to rot, harder than any oak or maple, super stable once dry, takes glues and finishes pretty well. The only bitch about it is getting long straight pieces and it can be murder on tools. I laughed when you sharpened up the drill bit immediately after telling us about using Mesquite as your knife scales and thought, yup dude knows what he's talking about.
And for people who don't know, mesquite grows in the hot, dry areas of the Southwestern USA and Mexico. It takes a long time to get a big enough tree for lumber and because of the wind in these areas, you end up with some pretty gnarled shapes, lots of figure and inclusions. Also, you get sand in your lumber because it blows in, the tree grows and it absolutely eats saw blades and drill bits. Don't ask for long clear boards of mesquite, because they just don't exist.
But the color and figure you get out of the pieces is just gorgeous. It's heavy as rocks so maybe don't make a violin or a baseball bat out of the stuff but for all sorts of other things, it's fantastic. Hardness is generally above Hickory and almost approaches some Rosewoods. And chances are if you're anywhere from South Texas to Southern California and The US Mexico border on up to Southern Utah, you can find it everywhere.
That worksharp unit looks amazing. Knife turned out great!
Robin Lewis Makes thanks Robin! The worksharp system is pretty dang awesome!
Turned out really nice. I will make one soon.
Desert Owl Forge thank you! I imagine you could make some incredible stuff being that you’ve got the forging skills to do it😀👍
Yes that's true, but my idea is to skip forging and heat treating. It introduces a lot of uncertainty to the equation. Your knife turned out really nice.
I like the hollow points on the handle. Cool project.
Cliff L thanks cliff! Glad you like the hollow pins too!
@@homesteadonomics making a spear never crossed my mind, I just like the look. It's different.
I hope you quarter an elk with that next season.I appreciate your content and craftsmanship.
Nick Henton I sure hope I get a chance too! I got drawn again this year...which is really not common here in AZ. But it’s for a low success odds unit. But still fun to be out there!!!😀
Very good job
Thank you Rachid!
It's ingenious idea to make knife out of saw blade and it looks strong. Wow nice and great skills.
unit woodworking thanks for checking it out! 😀🙏
Looking sharp.....pun intended.What a fun project, cheers!
Cory Stewart thanks Cory! It was a super fun project!!
Wow! Im headed to garage to start on my knife!
Frank Flores go for it!!! It’s Fun kind of build and I learned a lot too! I think you’ll enjoy it!
That's awesome!!
Logic Bob thank you Bob!
Very cool, I made a knife in high school metal shop out of a leaf spring but this seems like a great project to do with my two daughters. Now I just need to get them into the shop again. Thank you for sharing, God Bless, stay safe and be well.
Daniel Fisch thanks Daniel! Perhaps this might be the best time to get them in the shop with you😀👍
homesteadonomics 👍🏽👊🏽🤞🏽
Nice Job! Very professional looking knife. You have the satisfaction of building yourself. 👍🏼
You are doing great jobs. Your working area is so comfortable. As your fan I’m waiting for more videos🙏🏻😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
ZEKİ TAŞER thank you Zeki! I’ve got 3 more almost all filmed so there are more coming for sure! 😀👍
I like the hollow pins, good job.
rain coast thank you!
I may or may not ever make knife in the future. Who knows what the future holds. I wasn't planning on being at home this past week either. But, your videos are always a great inspiration. Keep them coming.
Even if it gives inspiration to clean the old junk drawer out, or reorganize a closet.... I'm good with that! thanks so much for watching!
Joe
Nice knife dude!
David Kenworthy thanks David!
You have pure talent. Always impressed with your videos.
KSfixitman thank you so much!!!! Greatly appreciate it!
Nicely done! 👏
Very nice project, you have a great result! Wishing all the best for you and your family!
Great project!
96ChevyDually6.5L thanks Chevy!
Wow Joe! What a great job you did. I wish I could do stuff like you do but that's not going to happen. Keep up the great work. And I hope all is well with you and your family,
Be safe and God bless us all from this covid-19. Take care,
Chris from Missouri
Thanks for checking it out Chris! I hope you and your family are safe as possible up in Missouri too! My prayers to you guys :)
Joe
Pretty cool. Beautiful knife. A Masterpiece.
Paul Leddy thank you! I appreciate you checking it out😀👍🙏
I have an old saw blade that now may become a knife, thank you.
Jerome Kukurugya awesome! Give it a shot, it’s a fun project that will turn out better than you think and it will bring about new skills too! I know I learned a bit of patience doing the early cutting out of the knife shape slowly so as to not ruin the temper. I wanted to just blow through it quickly but I knew I had to be patient...and I’m really glad I did now😀👍
That was a really great idea and I liked the build looked really good the final job.
Nice video, It's a really nice looking knife.
Joseph Durkin thanks Joseph!
Another great project, Joe. Stay safe out there on the front lines. Hope and pray your family fares well during these unusual times. Never thought I'd be so busy on the farm during retirement, but everyone wants eggs and I'm planting more gardens to assure an adequate supply of food in the local area.
Mark Jones thank you Mark! My work hasn’t gotten too crazy yet....but AZ is not as hard hit as some states. As for your retirement....I guess that this has been a surprise but I can say that myself and everyone in the world who eats food....greatly appreciates what farmers do! Now even more than ever!😀🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
That was an awesome knife build, now a leather sheath? Thank you for serving on the front line, stay healthy for you and yours! 🚒
Daniel Oliver thank you Daniel! A sheath will come eventually! But for now I gotta get back to a mountain of other projects that have been mounting😂.
And you and yours stay safe too!
@@homesteadonomics thanks Joe, I have three retired LACFD friends that are really worried about their FD brothers making paramedic calls and a neighbor that's a Chief in Long Beach FD that's working every day trying to keep his guys safe..... 😷👍👍
This is awesome! Good job
Hey bud. That's awesome.. please give us a project to do with our kids, where we can use less equipment than these expensive ones. Lol .. we tried your wagon before and it went great, we still have it.
Yasser Hussam I actually have a couple ideas for projects with my daughter. So you just might be in luck😉👍
Nice work! Nothing "wrong" with using old saw blades or other tool steels for blades. I'd still re-quench the blade once it was profiled though. Use a torch to heat up just the "edge" and quench it in some preheated oil, then sand it clean again and temper it in an oven for a couple hours to get the best possible edge.
You are awesome, Joe. Sending you all my best Xx
rhymeandreasoning thank you!!!!
Beautiful knife!
I think I could make this. Thanks for the inspiration Sir..
Beauty !.....Beauty and very sharpen knife !
Congratulations !
Best regards !
Pau from Argentina
That came out Awesome my friend. 🗡
Hello mate, watched your video and had a go at making one myself. Just finished it today, turned out pretty well. Cheers for the decent video 👍
Awesome use of an old blade buddy! I’ll have to remember that. You always have great ideas and give me tips and pointers for my own projects. Keep safe and looking forward to more videos!
Thanks so much! I make a lot a mistakes in my projects...but any tips that I can give, that are helpful to you... just makes my day! Greatly appreciated :D
Joe
what a great knife! l have yet to make a knife myself...and this looks like an easy way to do it.
Thanks so much! it was a lot of fun to make and I can say it sure won't be my last one ;)
I have that Work Sharp model. I love it! Wonderful for kitchen knives!
EddyGurge it sure is amazing! I used to dread sharpening kitchen knives on a stone. Not that one knife here or there is bad....but a whole drawer was a pain. But with the worksharp it is a breeze😀👍
You did a really nice job on this knife!
An excellent "point" about the hollow pins making it easier to create a spear with the knife :)
thanks you Greg! I hope I never had to make a spear... but nice to have an option! haha ;)
First - Thank you for being on the front line! Second - That was a good looking knife you made there. Third - To really show how sharp it is, let's see a wet shave with it! ;-)
Mike Homner thank you! Happy to do my day job! And thankful to have it! As for the wetshave......it’s definitely not that sharp! 😂
Very nice thanks for sharing keep up with your good 👍 work
Very nice knife, perfectly realized. Stay home, stay safe ;)
Val Clothis thank you! But unfortunately I can’t stay home all the time as my day job won’t let me. But we try to be as safe as we can👍👨🏻🚒
This blade will Keel!
Outstanding job on that knife. I have a ton of old saw blades so I might give it a try. Be safe out there
Thank you Tom! sounds like you've got lots of options for sawblade projects then :D
Love the knife build!
Ben LePage thanks Ben!
That was pretty neat to watch! 👀😃 Turned out really well. 👍 Awesome!!..
That is a wonderful video. Thank you very much. I once used a handsaw blade to make a long knife to slice bread. It won't hold an edge well. Using a circular saw blade is a good idea. You could even build a rocking dicing kitchen knife thanks to the blade's circular shape.
Nice work.
John Grytbakk thank you john!
great information. Thanks for sharing
Your stuff is always an inspiration. And love the sound effects! Lol😜
Big Sky at Night haha...glad you liked them! I think you’re the first comment mentioning them....I was starting to wonder if people were thrown off by them😂. It was getting late and I figured I needed to jazz it up with something....I was delirious🤪
Man a great Vid, with all stuff going on may try this with my son since he is out of school and bored!!!!!
Thank you! It would be a great time for you guys to get into a fun project like this right now! plenty of time for lots of fun projects.... and some honey do's as well.... I know my list could use some more items crossed off than listed down...lol
I really like your channel.
Rostam R thank you! I appreciate you watching the videos😀👍
looks great!
Nice job man. 😊
Hay uncle joe great video 😃😃😃
Verbosetooth 245 thanks buddy!
really nice job! I'm working on this now!
I love my worksharp!
Thoroughly Enjoyed this. How Satisfying to turn that old sawblade into this well Crafted knife. Almost drooled when You put the oil on that mesquite handle LOL. Thanks for Sharing Brother. Subscribed.
Get yourself a big chunk of aluminum or copper to draw all the heat out of your cuts. It works surprisingly good!
Bull Dozer I will have to do that...IMS out here has cool big chunks of those things in that scrap room al the time too!
no cactus was harmed during the filming of this video... LOL 😄
Just kidding very cool video!
T455 thanks you! That cactus was getting pretty big....and needed a hair cut😂
Alright Joe That was a very interesting build! I like the shape of that knife. Thanks for sharing. GOD Bless!
John Bowen thank you John! I took inspiration from the from some of the knives I’ve acquired over the years. I took inspiration of the drop point blade from one and the handle of another one to make what you see here!
@@homesteadonomics Looks Good I like it!
Thats so cool. If you ever wanna sell one, I'm in South Africa....Your projects are fantastic & I've learned so much. Thank you!
Thanks for another great project. It is really nice to see someone take the 3Rs to a great finish... Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The whole process makes it look like something even I could attempt. Thank you so much for sharing and when do we see it tied to the end of a stick? Stay safe and stay healthy!
Thom Lindgren haha.... I don’t know! But if I do I’d probably have to cut a little hook in it for spear fishing😂
I'm gonna try this
give it a go! a great little project to have fun with!
cool, nice work, congratulations.
Good job
Great job... love it!
ErlefromVa thank you!
homesteadonomics hope you and your family are doing well, love your shop!
haha, sold your soul for the work sharp... good vid non-theless
That is so awesome! You should make a sword next and become a Homesteadonomic Ninja!
Lois Degeneffe oh now that would be a fun build! But I’d probably get in trouble with that one😂
Nice knife
Great Build, very creative I enjoyed it,, I have a dozen blades hangin up so I'm going to to do it .
✌🏻🖖🏻👍🏻👊🏻
Very nice!
Super cool
nice knife thank you for the video
Nice result - hope to see an update how it's holding up.
Voneschenbach thanks! You will see an update when I get around to making a sheath for it😀👍
Nice job. My favourite knife I made in SA the handle was from a warthog tusk I found in Swaziland..never let me down.
Chris B wow! Now that would probably make a beautiful handle. I’ve seen some with elk and deer antlers as the scales and they make beautiful handles and feel good too!
You need to give a tour of your shop!!!
Joe that was a great project. Forged in Fire next?😉 The mesquite handles look amazing. Hope you and the family are healthy. As always Bear Down!
