- It’s Joe’s 69th birthday and he’s never flown a helicopter before. So Mikey plans a special gift of chopper flight lessons, complete with surprise pickup in front of the Buffalo hangar. Mikey jumps in for the ride as Joe struggles with the unfamiliar beast - and both McBryans will learn if they’ve finally found an aircraft that Joe can’t master. Another cold snap has cut off heat and power in a small northern town. AJ and James battle a frozen engine before they can head up with a load of supplies. On the way home, an engine fire forces the crew into an emergency shutdown.
Like Joe, I flew a heli on a milestone birthday (40th). That's where the similarities end. He has more flight knowledge in his earlobe than I have or will have.

That's also a MUCH easier helicopter to hover than smaller pistons, or even smaller turbines.
When I first tried flying a helicopter I said to myself, "I'll never get this right". Then before I knew it after going up a few times it became second nature to me.
That voltage was so low there had to be something wrong with the electrical circuit itself, not just cold batteries. I am no pilot, but I can analyze that much. Taking off with that bad indication is something in a pattern at Buffalo: they play with danger to the point where they are going to hurt or kill themselves. In other words, they never should have taken off from Norman Wells without a full electrical system checkout. Another thing: Why can't they install a canvas curtain (in addition to the hanger doors) so that it can be opened and closed quickly, just big enough to get a plane in or out, thus saving heat? Final step, close solid doors, and move canvas out of the way. Those people are stuck in a stupid and downright dangerous pattern and refuse to think things out like this. I'm starting to lose sympathy with the bunch of 'em.
