      when you inevitably do it wrong, unless you are a plumber and an electrician and know all the up to date codes and local requirements, and you go to sell the house, the home inspector will find it, tag it, and you'll pay for it on the back end. nothing is for free.

      @C&R Mechanical of course all the people in business doing the installs recommend you dont do it yourself, pay them a lot of money instead. it's a big govt aided scam. actually where i live a drop in replacement is fine and doesnt need any permits or code nonsense. since if you follow what was already done, it's good to code at that time of the original install, and is grandfathered in as a repair not a replacement (even tho realistically it is a replacement) as long as it's the same type and size of water heater. besides an insurance claim for a water heater isn't likely. mine is in the garage so it cant really flood anything, etc. not sure why the inspection matters, when i bought my house the inspector never mentioned if anything was to code or not on the report he gave me on the house i was buying. all they do is a cursory look for obvious problems.

    • @cryengine_x
      @cryengine_x Před 3 lety +5

      @C&R Mechanical sure, but there is a big scam in trades making it where its illegall to fix things, making it hard to get licensed etc. That decreases the supply of existing plumbers/electricians/whatever, which benefits those in business already, who push their state legislators for those laws. But is shortsighted and hurts everybody in the end, except a few plumbers and electricians.
      You have a distinct financial interest in telling people "dont do it yourself". If you come on these videos, it's always the installers that make comments such as yours. It should be clear what their interest is. It's not in the homeowners well being, it's in their pocketbook.
      With sharkbite fittings doing a water heater is really easy nowdays.
      As always, theres two sides to a story, and maybe the correct solution is somewhere in the middle.

I swapped my old heater because she was 14 years old and there's no reason to wait for the breakdown.... and I installed their 50 gallon AO Smith premier. I needed to change out one of the connection pipes - but the other was in good shape - just needed a new washer. Once she was filled and power turned on - I had plenty of hot water in about an hour. It's so silent... I was concerned it wasn't on. I'm very happy with this unit. Thanks

      Have you typed "Water Heater" into any search engine on the internet perhaps to search for average price or even to look for written step by step instructions? Or is the only time that your water heater situation has came up was during a conversation with your buddy? I wouldn't be surprised if CZcams somehow can tailor your video suggestions via your internet search history or some cookies stored that could be erased or wiped clean during a deletion of your browsing history or more so, running a disk clean up on your hard drive. If all you had done was speak the phrase "I need to replace my water heater" in the vicinity of your phone or computer and then this video turns up in your video suggestions soon after… Well that is some creep show ish and my first line of action would be to cover all computer and phone microphones with a small strip of tape when not in use. It may sound inconvenient for a cell phone but if you just fold a small part of the end of the strip of tape back on itself, you'll have a little tab to pull it off and away from the little mic hole on a cell when you need to talk.
      I've heard of people saying to cover computer camera lenses when not in use but to think that all the microphones on all my devices may be listening and keeping info on my conversations is just crazy

    Regarding the hoses, if they just go straight up to connect to the above cross pipes, then what you have is a convection flow of hot water up the hose, along one edge, and a downward flow of room temp or cool water back into the tank.
    I always buy a hose that is double the length shown, in the video, and I make a loop or S bend in the hose. Why?
    Think of a lake or swimming pool. Warm water rises, and cold water sinks. By creating that S loop or full circle loop, the hot water from the tank rises to the top of the S peak, but will not propagate down. The S loop is effective to stop convection currents and to not use the hot water tank exhaust connection from heating the house. The extra length hose cost is recovered in the first year from installation.

    • @nathannate4276
      @nathannate4276 Před 7 lety +7

      In the wiring I am familiar with you only need the white neutral wire if you need 120V. Red to white is 120V, black to white is 120V but red to black is 240V. if the water heater uses 240V and does not need 120V for any components then the white neutral wire would not be needed.

      In a non-metallic (Romex, etc) cable, the white is re-colored red on 208 (3 phase) or 240V (single phase) circuits. This is because a white (grounded) wire is not required, and not desired. All straight 208/240V circuits have 2 hots and a equipment ground.
