    Thanks for the advice. I just started a new graduate program last week. I am excited but I do feel overwhelmed when I look at the syllabi. I have been researching ways to read efficiently since it is impossible to read every single word and page. I also work full-time job as well and I am trying to find that balance with being enrolled in my program part time. I am going to be using my schools academic support center to help me develop some study strategies and to help me improve my writing.

    • @XicaHenley
      @XicaHenley  Před 6 lety

      I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! I find that if I really dissect my assignments beforehand, it gives me a better idea of how to attack the reading.
      In addition, you'll find that the text styles vary. Some readings are just dense and you have to read through them EXTREMELY CLOSELY, while some you can focus on headings or chapter summaries.
      If you haven't, set up a schedule for yourself. Find sacred times to read.
      The thing that helps me the most, purposeful highlighting. I write notes like "quote this" or "like in my school" next to certain highlights so that I'm not blindly searching through texts for important information.
      Don't be surprised if this becomes a new blog/video!
      Good luck!

    Thank you so much ! May I ask? How many courses did you take/hours did you work a week? I'm a FT teacher, working 35 hours a week in school ... sometimes extra things come up of course and I have to prep outside of school-hours (I looked up your BLOG and realized you are an educator also!) I am starting FT GRAD courses this fall as well. 3 classes. The degree is in the same subject I currently teach. I am 29, married but no kids yet, I am NOT much of a socializer at all outside of work and my husband is a Pre-Dental student so is studying all day himself. I feel now is the time I need to do this before those things change. My husband and I could end up anywhere in 2 years (any Dental school my husband is admitted into we will go to, be that 50 or 1,000+ miles away) and I want a child soon too. I took 8 classes my last semester of my undergrad degree and was on the Dean's list. I've been looking up videos because when I tell my co-workers my plan they all give me this face and say "Are you sure? That's a lot" Your video has given me a lot of encouragement. Thank you !

    • @XicaHenley
      @XicaHenley  Před 6 lety +3

      Each semester I take two 8-week courses that run one at a time, so at any given time, I am only taking one course. The program is accelerated though, so there are no summers off or spring breaks. My work schedule is fairly similar to yours.
      The key to success is really managing your time. Once you create a schedule and stick to it, you'll find yourself in a routine and things will smooth out. There will be challenging moments, but you'll get through!
      Good luck!

    this video was very helpful, thank you! I have a question that relates to my position right now. I graduated with my undergrad a couple months ago and have been working a part-time job and an internship. I want to get my masters as soon as possible but my loans from my undergrad studies are starting to kick in and although I want to find a full time job to pay off my loans and save some money I don't want the time I put into my career to be wasted if I choose to be a full-time student after a year or so. Are there ways of working and studying part-time and still getting your MBA in under 3 or so years or working part-time and being a full time student in a way that is cost-effective? It sucks that money plays such a large role in this equation and I don't want to feel overworked and have my studies, personal life, and work life compromised because of that. I'm also a competitive amateur boxer with a full time training regiment, I plan on working out everyday even if it means not going to the gym and doing it at home. Although this is an extremely stressful time for me my resiliency is being tested and I'll come out stronger and more prepared for life's challenges.

    • @XicaHenley
      @XicaHenley  Před 5 lety

      Whew! That’s a lot to consider! I would suggest finding a University that offers a more flexible program and places everyone in cohorts. Although I’ve constantly been enrolled school, we only take two courses per semester, and each course is 8-weeks. As a result, I’m only focusing on one class at a time, which allows me to focus on other things in my life and not become overwhelmed. I hope this helps, good luck!

    i want to ask for an advice for my current situation
    im currently studying for Masters in Computer Science in a University at Malaysia.
    i was offered a position as a web programmer in a company 3 weeks after my enrollment
    currently,my situation has gotten worse. During my job,i cant focus on doing my work as a programmer at the company as assignment started to fill up my heads. And my assignment is really hard since they require a full completed program/software as an assignment.
    Im the kind of person who are able to do work/assignment properly when inspired and motivated.During my degree years,i was able to handle the assignment perfectly well with assignment send up early and the quality of work is quite good
    but now,im actually behind schedule of 2 programming assignment that are to be completed within 1 week and im actually starting to panicking in the workplace because i keep thinking how i can do this assignment in time.
    When i arrive home,i could do the assignment given but a very low quality work if it is rushed. i tried the whole Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after work hours to completed it but still not yet finish
    i dont know
    Should i go and send un-quality work of mine to the Professors?or should i quit my job and focus on finishing my Masters?
