Henry Johnson is as "greasy" as he wannabe !!! I need that clip on loop! I treadmill to this! Never get tired of the varied attacks, or textures of his statements! Ramsey knows what he wants in his sound..
Never thought I'd hear a version of this song "WITHOUT" Maurice White (R.I.P.) and Philip Bailey's vocals that I could like, but this was OFF THE CHARTS!
Already an amazing solo and when he hits that part where he’s harmonizing with himself and it sounds like two guitars it just takes it to the stratosphere
I played a small chitlin circuit type of club in the mid 70s where my band opened up for Jack McDuff. His guitarist was the great Henry Johnson. It was unforgettable.
No, the genius here is CHARLES STEPNEY. He wrote and produced. People think it was Maurice White…it wasn’t. When Stepney died in 1975, they stole everything. Years later Maurice White had to settle out of court with Stepney’s family regarding the millions in royalties they never received.
fucking great. heard Yesterday's New Quintet/Madlib version, then found the EW&F version, but this is by far my favorite version. wish I was alive in 1980 to see this!
It was originally a Ramsey Lewis tune produced by Maurice White. From the 1974 Ramsey Lewis album Sun Goddess...definitely NOT EWF...they were just the backing band !!
Yea that actually is a nice guitar solo. Improvised melody from Ramsey was well put together as well. Shows he really knows it. Bass and drums I give' m an A++++. Creative in the pocket so don't knock it! But back to the guitar. I can tell the action of the guitar is well set up. It has a nice balance with 12 gauge nickel wound maybe 13 gauge played with a light medium pick which gives flexibility and fluidity over the strings. coming out of the board facilitates his playing more, having the power to be heard clearly. He 's got all the George Benson stops which every jazz guitarist must have. He put them in the right place and in his own way. My man!
Fuck man you know your stuff, to help your point I believe ur right based on the sound of strings, I use 12-14 based on my tunings but when you play in lighter tunings (basically standard) the strings are super flexible and easy to use. Also adds a deeper tone to the strings idk but yeah, keep rockin brotha
Yes sir I also had the privilege to see that show in person. No flares, just music PURE music. One the best show I have ever been at! Where did you get the DVD ( or VHS lol) ? Never thought I would see this again !!! This was the second stint of the Montréal Jazz festival in a very simple theatre, with concrete all over... But the music just got better !!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I just found this in may 2024. I knew it was going to be amazing when the drummer hit the cymbals with his hands 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
😊
Henry Johnson absolutely kills it with that funky solo.
Wow ! He killed it !!! So good.
Indeed! He and the guitar are on fire!
Yeh, Gotta check him out. New name for me.@@retromusings
O,yeah
Imagine being such a good guitarist that Ramsey doesn’t even take a solo on this song? “Yeah, Henry’s got this.” He sure does. 🔥
The great Henry Johnson on guitar. AMAZING!!!
So smooth and jazzy
Guitar solo was a super feel good funky Testimony
Of course everyone is searching this song (RIP Mr. Lewis), but I’ve never heard this stripped down version. Absolutely incredible.
This Cat on the Guitar is what i refer to as a Gunslinger,He's Great !

I think I like this version better!
Bought that album when it first came out...played it to death...RIP🙏
Ain't nothing like the sound of a big bodied semi hollow. So smooth.

I had never heard about them. Amazing vibes, I loved it. It would be good with samba, that what I was looking for my music.
The genius of Maurice White.
RIP.
WOW! I had no idea Maurice White produced and wrote this amazing piece.
wiki says: "Sun Goddess" is a single by jazz musician Ramsey Lewis featuring the band Earth, Wind & Fire issued in 1975 on Columbia Records.
No, the genius here is CHARLES STEPNEY. He wrote and produced. People think it was Maurice White…it wasn’t. When Stepney died in 1975, they stole everything. Years later Maurice White had to settle out of court with Stepney’s family regarding the millions in royalties they never received.

As much as I love the studio version with the smooth EWF vocals (way oh...), this instrumental version is off the chain!!!!!
R.I.P. Ramsey Lewis
Frank had the look of joy laying down the beat on the drums.
wonderful!!...
can you imagine a guitar duel between Henry Johnson and George Benson?
Collaboration would be better !
He said Benson was a major influence
fucking great. heard Yesterday's New Quintet/Madlib version, then found the EW&F version, but this is by far my favorite version. wish I was alive in 1980 to see this!
Great to see the late Ramsey Lewis and his band perform his modern jazz/funk masterpiece which EWF popularized with their unique vocal style.
It was originally a Ramsey Lewis tune produced by Maurice White. From the 1974 Ramsey Lewis album Sun Goddess...definitely NOT EWF...they were just the backing band !!
Rest In Peace 🕊🕊
