I think we are a few trying to make our dry clay pieces waterproof. Thank you so much for sharing this technique. Love your art! 👌🏼👌🏼
My first time watching your videos, and I already learned something from the introduction alone. Your sculptures don't need to be perfect to be beautiful. I consistently need to remind myself that perfection doesn't exist!
I made a close of toast with butter cause I was bored and desired to make it a soap bar holder but didn’t know how to water proof it 😭 so thx
Lovely work! So creative ❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely gorgeous work. All your hard work really pays off. Thanks so much for showing us your processes. Your videos are are not only very informative but really relaxing to watch. Your pets are also very cute!! 🙏🙏🙏🤗
I just discovered your amazing channel this morning! Thank You for all that you share and do 💜☮️🙏🏼✨
Thank you so much! :)
Im just about to get into air dry clay & happen to have dishwasher safe modpodge. With that I wouldnt need another layer of the acrylic seal, Im guessing?!
Wicked sculptures! :)
Just found out your channel a while ago, i just want to say that your works are beautiful and your videos are really calming
Thank you very much!
I’ve been searching for so long and this is the first video to help me with what I wanted thank you 🙏🏾
Thank you! I’m glad to have helped
Thank you!!
thank you! this video has been very helpful! ❤
Thank you! I’m glad it helped :)
Beautiful pots👍
Thank you!
Its so clam to watch 💙 it helps me clear my mind for a while..nice video 🥰
ahhh thank you. That's my goal in making these videos.
Lindoooo
Your pieces are extraordinary and strikingly beautiful. I love the colours of clay you use. Can you please tell me, what do you do with your sculptures? If you sell them, can I have the link to your shop site? Thank you.
Thank you. Yes, I do sell my sculptures. (Just not these pots as of the moment). You may check my website enondebelen.com for my available pieces.
welp i learned the hard way when my little garden gnome just melted away 😢 trying this method
You're extremely talented.. ❤️🥰👌
Thank you!!!
can you make cups and other waterproof things too? btw I LOVE your sculptures!
Pottery? I haven’t tried it yet but I would love to.
Absolutely beautiful, I hope your business does well ❤
Thank you! :)
So talented . 😊🙏🏻🥀
Thank you! :)

I usually just paint them the colour I like then once dry seal with yacht varnish.
Nice!
Your work is incredible! Are these waterproof enough to be submerged in water? Like a fish tank?❤️🇦🇺
Thank you. I wouldn’t recommend.
hello! beautiful work. 💗
I was curious since the 1st video.. can you put dirt and plants in here? or would the moist dirt degrade the layers of sealant and then the pot over time?
Yes you can put soil and plants in these. The waterproof sealant is the layer that separates the clay from the soil and water. If you noticed in the part 1, I showed a similar pot a made a year ago. The pot and sealant are still intact. Though I recommend low maintenance plants with these the don’t require a lot of watering like cactus or succulents.
@@enondebelen thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing this! Would this process b safe to use on air dry clay dinner plates?!
Maybe for decorative purposes only. Airdry clay is not recommended for daily functional use because it’s porous and not as strong as clays that need to be fired (ceramics, stoneware, etc).
Love your pots! How many layers of acrylic water seal you put on and where you buy it?
I applied 2 layers. Acrylic water seal by Bosny, I bought in our local hardware store
hey, i love your work! i was wondering if the finish of the mod podge matters (i.e. matte or gloss finish)? also does the mod podge make the finish look streaky? thank you!!
Someone said it prevents it from yellowing or like the color dulling, something like that, so I would do it just incase!
A layer of Mod Podge (whether it’s matte or gloss) prevents the color of clay from changing IF you’re adding a water sealant on it. But if you’re gonna use the Mod Podge as it is, it adds a bit of shimmer on the clay (even the matte one). Honestly I want the clay to be as raw as it can, but adding a finish puts extra protection on the clay.
Hi, would you use the same for candle jars (not candle holders but jars where you pour wax in)? Or some different sealant should be used for candles? Thanks 😊
Hello. That’s a very good question. I haven’t tried it yet. But I think it would be okay? Just as long as there’s no direct heat or too much heat to the pot. I will try with one of my pieces. I will let you know :) (or might make a video of it in the future)
Would dabbing the modge podge and acrylic water sealant work on projects that have been painted?
I think so. 👍🏽
I found this video very helpful, but unfortunately I’m unable to get my hands on the water seal you used are there any others similar to the one you used?
So far, this is the only one I have used. There are some comments on my channel that say they used yacht varnish? I guess any of those heavy-duty waterproof sealant that you can find in hardware stores would be okay. You may try it in just one piece, then if turns out good, then you’re good. :)
Can I make a water colour palette using this method.
Hmmm, I think you can. Just be extra extra careful with it.
These are so beautiful, gorgeous pots, 😍😘💋
Thank you! ☺️
Could you share the link for acrylic water seal. Or any other sealer that you could recommend.
Kindly search for Bosny water seal in Google
Beautiful! Do you think this would work to seal palettes for watercolor painting?
Thank you! Yes, I think it would work as a paint palette. Just make sure that the clay is thick, around half an inch or so. Then maybe 2-3 coats of waterproof sealant. 👍🏽
@@enondebelen Thank you so much for the reply!
Hello! How do you thin out the acrylic sealant? Like if it was exposed and gets too viscous. Also for cleaning the brushes/tools. Thanks!
Hello! I haven’t tried thinning out my acrylic sealant so I’m afraid I can’t tell you any. Maybe there are solvents out there? I’m not too sure. Maybe it’s better to buy a new one and make sure to cover it tightly when not in use hehehe. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to cleaning my brushes 🥲. But the brushes that I use for applying acrylic sealant gets soft again when I dip them in the acrylic water seal. It’s a solvent type.
@@enondebelenthanks for the response! I've seen acrylic thinners online I'll see if it works.
Also I've seen a water based water stop but in a bigger size, maybe you could try that
Have you found and acrylic varnish with a matte finish that you wpuld recommend for water proofing?
I have not.
You mean "test if it REPELS water" lol great video, i needed this, can you use this method with the creyola air dry clay? Also where did you buy the sealer?
I haven’t tried Crayola air dry clay yet. I bought the sealant in our local hardware store. It’s an acrylic water seal by a brand Bosny.
What's the diff between white airdry and the teracotta one? Is there anything you can recommend instead of mod podge? It's too expensive for me 😢new subscriber btw
Their difference is just the color. Before I used Mod Podge, I used Elmer’s glue mixed with water because it’s a cheaper option. But overtime, it turns yellow so I wouldn’t really recommend it. I haven’t discovered anything else aside from Mod Podge.
Hi enon, do i still need to apply mod podge if i painted my clay with acrylic?
Hello! I still do in mine for added protection.
I am not able to find bosny water seal (in india)..so can u pls recommend some other sealer that will be easily available and good..plss
Have you tried searching in Google “waterproofing sealant”? It might show some items that are available in your area. :)
I thought that pot on video cover looks like Jimin from BTS but know i checked your channel and it's definitely not a coincidence😅

Does the terracotta air dry clay work in the same way as traditional terracotta plant pots? The reason a lot of gardeners and houseplant lovers use terracotta pots is it absorbs water so it keeps the soil moist for much longer, which is great for the plant. If you seal inside, I presume that’d prevent it from holding any moisture? That’s the main pro of terracotta pots. Unless the air dry version isn’t meant to work in the same way?
The term “terracotta” in this video pertains to the color of the airdry clay used. Jovi airdry clay has three color variations - white, gray, and terracotta. That’s what I am using in this video. It doesn’t work the same as the traditional terracotta pots because if it’s left in contact with moisture, it will absorb the moisture and will eventually break. Airdry clay doesn’t need firing unlike earthenware so it’s more fragile and more water-absorbent, that’s why it needs to be sealed with a sealant to make it more durable and water-resistant.
How long after applying the Mod Podge do you then apply the sealant ? Cos it’s stated that Mod Podge takes 4 weeks to cure and I’m wondering if I really do have to wait that long. Thank you so muchhh
I apply it immediately once it’s dry to touch. 😅 Maybe just a couple of hours. So far, the pots are still good even if I don’t wait that long
@@enondebelen perfect! Thank you so much for your reply. I’m gonna go apply my sealant now 🤣 have a great day!
Hey can you drill a hole at the back after it’s dries?
I suggest putting a hole when it’s still wet. The clay might break if you drill on it.
What are the materials u used other than mod podge thx
Acrylic water seal Bosny
If I wanted to paint my pot before making it waterproof, would I paint it before the mod podge layers? Would it affect the colour of the paint?
If you’re going to use acrylic paint, you may go straight to waterproofing. It won’t affect the color of the paint.
But if you’re going to use other colorants such as watercolor or soft pastel (those are what I’ve tried so far aside from acrylics), you must use a spray-type kind of sealant because the colors get reactivated once it gets in touch with something wet, so you don’t want to use a brush with that.
But paint -> Mod Podge -> waterproof sealant layers won’t hurt.
Thank you so much that's so helpful!!
Would this aproach work on painted and already dried airy dry clay and also. Would this aprpach work on airdry clay jewellery???
Yes I think so. With jewelry, I’m not sure. Since it would be in contact with skin, the acrylic sealant might be a skin irritant to some
Hi there, If i were to use this technique on a clay cup would this support liquid?
Before I went on and make a collection of this, I tested first if it can actually hold liquid for long periods of time. With acrylic water seal (a waterproof sealant), yes it does. But I wouldn’t really recommend.
@@enondebelen Okay thank you so much!
When would you paint the product, before or after mod podge?
Before. Sealant is always the last
Can you use the clay to make a cup and use the cup once its been sealed with the 2 sealants.
You may use this type of clay to make a decorative cup, but not a cup where you can put hot or cold drinks because 1, it’s not food-grade. 2, it might break easily.
@@enondebelen OK thank you for the info, I'm new to this craft so just wondered what the usability could be, I'll explore other ways to use it.
@@howlingwind1937 I see some make incense holders, flower holders, candle holders with airdry clay. I made some myself but the ones I made where the the sealed clay comes in contact with heat, I wouldn’t really recommend. I am still yet to experiment other sealants. So far I tried Mod Podge, Bosny water seal, and UV resin, all of which I won’t recommend if the sculpture will be subjected to heat.
Airdry clay is mostly for decorative or ornamental purposes only. If what you’re looking for is something with functionality, what’s best for you are clays that require firing such as ceramic, stoneware, and porcelain
@@enondebelen thank you so much that's great advice, I'll make a few plant pots, it'll help get the skill down for maybe changing to other clays, and it looks like fun anyway. Cheers!
Hi! May i know, if i wanted to paint the planter, should it be done before or after sealing?
Before
@@enondebelen thank you! And thanks for sharing all your contents, your work is amazing!! ❤️
@@maryamchoo1518 thank you! And thank you for watching also :)
Hmmm would a spraying of clear matte before waterproof work?
I think that would work too? Just as long as it won’t stain the clay. I haven’t tried the spray types yet.
@@enondebelen hmmm Ive only done sprays after its been painted and so far its turning out well
Usually with waterproof deck sealers, you have to reapply after a few years. but you don't have to with these pots?
I’d guess not, since they probably donst get wet as often. Idk for sure though
@@dasei777 what do you mean? They water the plants, so yes, they're getting wet often
@@CnithTheOnliestOne oh.. right. I thought of them as decoration, not actual pots
May I know what clay do you use?
Read: title of the video
does hair or dust stick to these?
When it dries, no. Dust gets inside the nook and crannies though.
Are these food safe?
No, they’re not.
Does not it get break once dried we don’t need to bake it
It’s air dry clay. It doesn’t need baking. You just need to let it dry. It will not break unless force is applied to it (e.g. falls on the floor, throw it).
@@enondebelen Thank you very much for your reply love all your videos ❤
oh i dont know bout this one. i thought its not possible to make an air dry clay pot for plant 😅
Help me please. I painted my clay with acrylic paint an after waiting for many days for it to fully dry. I applied 2 coats of pva glue(mod podge alternative) to seal it. After waiting for a day, I then put my first coat of acrylic matte. It's fully dried now and it stained my sculpture because it left this white look. Any help?
Do I have to mix the matte with water?
What color of acrylic paint did you use?
A mixture of brown and yellow
Also while I'm sealing the clay, the paint is coming off, kind of like "paint chipping"
@@enondebelenhi! Do you have amy recommendations to help me? Would really appreciate it! Thanks
Because while I'm sealing the clay with glue, the paint is coming off
Right now I'm sealing it with acrylic matte an it's still coming off :(
@@alfonso3990 are you using water in your acrylic paint?

Why not just use a kiln?
I have actually tried making a couple of pieces with ceramic clay after doing this video. Renting a kiln is kind of expensive for me right now but hopefully I will have a budget for it someday. I’d love to make ceramic pieces in the future. So for now, I make use of airdry clay that doesn’t need firing in a kiln.
Can you drink on it??
Technically, yes. But 1, it’s not safe because the sealant is not food-grade. 2, it is not advisable to use this like mugs or cups made with ceramics because it’s not as durable. Air dry clay is recommended for display or decorative purposes only, or ornaments such as this pot with zero to minimal movement and maintenance.
