Yamaha PSR-280: Looks like a toy, plays like a BOSS

- Back in the late 90's, Yamaha went through a phase of making keyboards with bright personalities and unexpected features. The PSR-280 was close to the top of this range, surpassed only (and greatly) by the classic DJX.
My son and I have recently started keyboard lessons and dug our old PSR-280 out of the back of the cupboard. Still works as well as it did twenty years ago!
Yeah, if stored well these units are extremely durable. I've had PSR-270 since childhood and except yellowed keys everything works perfectly. I gave it away a couple of years ago to a friend who plays it to this day.

Bro I think this is THE keyboard I have been looking for. A friend of mine let me borrow it about 2002 and I used it on a lot of 4-track recordings from then to about 2004 or so, alongside my standard Casio keys etc. of the time. The fun thing about a lot of these bargain bin Yamaha and Casio keyboards from the 90s/00s is that once you sift through some of the more throwaway sounds you will find some interesting unique indie synth sounds, features and whathaveyou that are unique to those boards. Interesting how many diverse array of synth sounds there are from top of the line keys and software (personally I use Reason now) to these generic beginner keyboards, there's always something new to discover.
Yep, I think keyboards like this are very true to their time. It was a golden age for synths :)
Already it came out in 2000 but they don't make things like they used to for sure this thing is it diamond in the rough
The PSR-280 was the keyboard to sell at students, but later came the PSR-225GM. This one was cheaper and almost as good.

It was a great keyboard and still is! Got one 20 years ago or earlier and I am using now - after a long time as a DAW MIDI keyboard - just a hobby! I wonder if there is any technician that has modified and added a Bend control knob! It would become a modern one.
Lots of fun :) The DJX has all the same sounds plus a pitch bend control and lots of other tricks. Worth looking out for!

Yep I think that would be correct. They're both in a weird sub-breed of keyboards. The DJX has so many more features though, it seems strange that Yamaha made such a big leap with nothing in between. And I'll never understand why they abandoned such a fun, playful approach to the basic keyboard concept :/@@michellemonet4358

I liked the Go:Keys. It's a very different style of keyboard but it's nicer to play than the old Yamahas and it has some very professional sounds. I think you'd like it :) @@michellemonet4358

Of course.. I have the models lower than this lol! Cause I never even heard of this unit or the sound set, touch response keys,etc. It is nicer than I would have EVER thought, so if I should go to Florida this summer I will be sure to be on the look out for some of these keyboards you have featured here. I do have a source for these down there.
I own a Yamaha EX5 workstation keyboard. It is HEAVY and most of the time I don't really need all of it's power. As a result, I use the PSR 280 a lot of the time since it is light and sounds pretty good. I mainly use piano and organ sounds so this keyboard works great. Best $100 I ever spent at Costco - keyboard stand was even included.

I had one for a couple years. Traded it for an electric guitar after I got my Motif 6.
Music teacher had one and I really wanted one and finally found one it sounds better even

The juicy orange 🍊 backlit LCD screen 📺 on that bad boy keyboard 🎹 is something the PSR-D1-DJX should’ve had. The LCD Screen 📺 on the first DJX wasn’t backlit.

Nice!! I found one of these in a trash can. Boyfriend fixed it and now I believe its worling quite wonderfully! Since I know this model is o longer on the market do you know what a comparable keyboard is (in case this one bites the dust)??
I think the modern equivalent would be something like a Yamaha PSR-E373.

the piano sounded the same as Yamaha new models. It's a 90's keyboard. Don't understand why Yamaha still haven't made a new sound chip
really , the same chip? maybe the sounds are good enough for the human ear already ? I have the DJX , i love the organs on it and the realtime controls. I can't remember if it has velocity and aftertouch keys though . . . . .

Yes, its still better than new yamaha Psr f50 which is of course low budget but hey, we are 20 years later

Yes, it doesn’t matter if the amps are too high, it’ll take as many as it needs as long as the voltage is within about 10% of what’s specified.

Question how does your Yamaha get so much reverb I have the same one and the reverbs not that good
I think what you’re hearing is the sustain effect, activated by holding the foot pedal down. I think there was a “depth” setting for reverb but it’s been a long time since I had this keyboard, can’t remember now. You can still get the manual though, you just google the model number followed by “PDF“

Hey, hello, i have a question for this piano, my father give me it this week, but i have a sound problem, i mean, when i hit a note (with grandpiano for exemple) the note is played but i don't have the "echo" or i don't know how to name it, but the song instantly stop after i put off my finger. So that relly strange, i don't know how to fix it

Yeah that’s what sustain pedals are for! Sustain pedals make the sound last longer and without sustain it just instantly stops once you play the key.
No pedals? That's bad!

I just got a Chinese pedal - it has a standard FC4 - FC5 socket - any standard pedal with a mono 6.35mm (1/4") jack will do.
