Is Newark's Iconic HOBBY's DELI as Good as Katz's?

- Hobby's Deli is arguably Newark's best kept secret. It is a Jewish deli that has been around since 1962 and is still going strong today. It is a popular destination for meals before and after Devils games, and they even have a separate earing area for Rangers fans to protect them! Hobby's Deli is very highly reviewed, and some people say it is the best Jewish deli in NYC despite being in Newark, even better than Katz's! But is Hobby's really that great or is it just a big fish in a small pond?
We will find out in this video if Hobby's is the best Jewish deli in New Jersey, as well as the best Jewish deli in New York! We will try the pastrami and the corned beef as Hobby's Deli, as well as matzoh ball soup and a vanilla egg cream. NYC Jewish delis are quite delicious and the bar is quite high. To call Hobby's on par, it must be pretty good so it will be held to a high standard. We will find out together if it's deserving of its reputation!

I want to clarify that the server was not rude or unpleasant. She was quite friendly actually. I'm seeing comments that she seemed not polite or enthusiastic. I can see how it sounds that way only from her voice but if you had seen her you would not have felt service was lacking.
What you’re seeing in the soup is a real stock that has not been chilled! Once it is chilled then most places skim off the congealed layer of fat and the broth becomes clear. But as long as the fat remains in the broth, it separates just like any other hydrophobic oil.
So the waitress skipped the charm school lessons eh? 🤣
Ah, more than that.
ROFL!
It’s Jersey, what do you expect?
Was it that bad? She didn’t seem too rude or anything…
Yeah and your mom skipped the ho school
The waitress gave off ‘annoyed and don’t want to be working here’
She needs to be fired and go back to working at McDonalds or Walmart
Agree!!
@@alexanderv.8961 😆
Yeah I thought the same thing
We don't all have good days. The whole fake personality of servers thing is honestly something I'd love to see go. I live outside the US now and it's so much more refreshing visiting places where people can be honest to the customers.
Perhaps it's just a US thing and wanted to be treated like royalty. Who knows.
It says here small, large, quart…
_one size_
haha : )
You need to try Kenny & Ziggy’s in Houston. He’s a third generation deli man, in fact he was in a documentary called Deli Man !
I just watched deli man based this comment, wow so awesome. Thank you, great watch for soooo many reasons. UA check it out
I have heard of Kenny & ZIggys and I saw the movie which I think it pretty cool. Legendary. I hope to try it once myself. For some weird reason I have never visited Houston.
I love your food reviews bc you're so honest and straightforward. I feel we have a similar palate with you loving steak and American cuisine
Always good to see my hometown covered by channels I follow. I've never been to that place
Cole Slaw would be on the side for me not on the sandwich, I rather taste the meat
yummmmm even a half decent pastrami/corn beef sandwich will make me drool, because they are so hard to find near me.
You can sous vide any cut and it will turn out perfect.
@@BlackJesus8463
Perhaps? But how does it compare with corned beef and pastrami lovingly prepared in a time consuming, almost extinct, traditional method?
Another great video ❤❤❤thx UA... You on fire
You need to try Pastrami Grill Bistro in Garfield, NJ...on par with Katz's and half the price...
Second this! But not exactly half the price. They offer an 8oz sandwich at $15 which is more than enough food for anyone but the full size sandwich is something around $22-25 I think which is the same size as a Katz sandwich.
Nevertheless, it’s cheaper for about as close to what you get Katz’s pastrami as you’re gonna find(one of 2 of the guys there used to work at Katz’s and I wouldn’t be surprised if they source their meat from the same purveyor even).
Closest thing to Katz’s I’ve ever had. I want to sit and eat there next time and try different things like the stuffed cabbage and latke.
I totally agree!!! Pastrami grill bistro in Garfield is amazing!!!!
I've suggested Pastrami Grill to UA before. I'm from Newark and Hobby's Deli is ok, but that spot in Garfield is way better! They have 2 workers that used to work at Katz in NY so that says alot!
UA.... please go try that place! Their prices are great and their food is awesome!😊👍🏽
Oh yes, that place in Garfield, New Jersey. I definitely have to try it. I don’t live far from there. I heard it’s fantastic and definitely much closer and easier to get to going all the way to KATZ.
Yeah, the music is too loud and it’s getting annoying the same music for how long eons it seems like please you way at least make the music much lower in the background
Please like the music it's very western. Don't you like the old west? What's wrong with you?
Next episode, “ It’s UA and I’m somewhere in the middle of the US in the witness protection program cause I dissed the chicken matzo soup at Hobby’s !!”😂😂😂
I was there yesterday about 10:30 for the first time since covid. It would have been nice to see you. I think you did a honest review, It's the kind of place that grows on you, I had a corned beef and matzo ball soup enjoyed it very much. The place had a fire a while back and they did a nice job keeping the old time feel to the place.
Hey UA thanks to you I found out about this place went there today and absolutely loved it will go again and again
I enjoy and subscribe. Why you think you need music in your videos is beyond me.
You said it in the review. If you just got the pastrami with deli mustard, you would have been much happier.
Nice video, UA. Being a huge fan of Katz, I agree that Hobby's doesn't compare. The soup didn't look good. The only soup I can see leaving a ring on the bowl like that is as someone mentioned, Campbell's.
We need a fan meetup in NYC!!!
UA is the man ! Appreciate the honesty as well.
Great stuff UA.
Nice job trying the sandwich rather quickly! And the music is awesome
Yeah I love the music I blast it in my car driving down the road
I’m impressed with this place. I’m going to give it a shot.
Wish we had delis like this in South Jersey. There is one in Cherry Hill that’s supposed to be pretty good. Thanks for the review!
go to milanese in riverton
Thanks for the review. I love corned beef, but not pastrami, for some reason. I judge a deli by its matzoh ball soup, however.
The food looks so delicious. I never tried Jewish food, but it looks really good. I would love to eat there. Wow I am so hungry.
Pastrami Grill Bistro in Garfield NJ is a must. Better than Katz’s Deli and I’m a huge Katz’s deli fan. The pastrami melts in your mouth.
I haven’t been to Katz’s in maybe 2 years but they have this sandwich there as well. Looking forward to trying this place out though!
Hey UA
Next time when you are in the mood for pastrami in NJ . Please stop by The Pastrami grill Bistro in Garfield NJ . I would said it would stand up to Katz and the price, portion are fantastic! Must try!
What’s your favorite ball cap? The Phillys one or Adidas?
That sandwich was perfect but I'd ask for extra Russia dressing!
Plus the server seems nasty
Got immediately turned off by the one size soup then why advertise portion sizes on your menu if it isn’t available
If you ever get to Sedona, Arizona you should try Moscato in Camp Verde. The best Italian I have ever had.
living in phoenix, next time i head up to sedona area, ill check it out
@@weege001you might want to get reservations
The glass with your egg cream looks really dirty on the back facing away from you and on the ring at bottom. I hope it’s syrup and not meat and counter goo.
It's fine if it's dirty. It all goes to the same place anyways
It looks delicious
Take it as a hint when you are seated next to the toilet in an otherwise empty place.
It is odd, but I'm sure he asked for a seat off in the corner so he can film and talk. It's better than if they put him in the middle of the restaurant.
Yea and you’re hear watching so not sure what your point is
# 30 in the menu, california grilled chicken (Certified by Marty) really peaked my interest. I wish you had it as an extra to show what its like!
I had a bowl of beans for lunch. Final score: 3.6/10
needs rice cheese and herbs.
I think a Reuben with coleslaw is called a “Rachel”
I thought a Rachel was substituting pastrami for corned beef
@@cyclopsvision6370I thought a Rachel is when you substitute turkey
UA, you need to try Hershey's at Reading bus station in Philly! The best! I am a Marx's lover but I have to say is side by side if not better, melt in your mouth pastrami. And Affordable prices for sandwiches.
Glad you're feeling better! You sound much better! If you ever make it out to Westchester County in New York, Liebman's in Ardsley and Epstein's in Scarsdale (on central avenue) are both really really good delis and they are well known for their pastrami sandwiches.
I agree, should be more bark. To give a more consistant review, just get plain pastrami or corned beef with there deli mustard. I like your music in your vids. Its what i heard in your first vids and i like it now as well. Come to long island. Lots of great places here.
You need to go to NY & try Liebmans Deli… this is an amazing Jewish Deli that recently opened up a second location in Ardsley, NY. They’ve been in business since 1953.
Jersey boy born and raised here, I love Hobby’s so much, some of the best sandwiches on the planet, let’s go Devils!!!
I used to hide in the basement at night
Hobby’s looks good. lol at the Rangers fan sign
When I lived in NYC, I found Sarge's quite average. In my opinion Katzs was the best in NY.
Long shot but does anyone know what review Tina says the signature "see you later"? Made me laugh so much but I have no idea which one it is. Thanks
I grew up about 20 minutes from there, no doubt it's old school. Just the outside look of the building with the apartments on top with the window AC units..
I missed watching reviews of places like this. I prefer seeing these sort of places vs. the fancy ones.
The soup was probably hanging around a long time.
No kidding
Being out West in Oregon, a virtual waste land for any deli, I would find that sandwich nirvana -
But where's the damn pickles ??
Got to go to Ferry Street area for great rodizio
The fact that he still mentions Sarge's after the disgusting treatment he received there says a lot. You're a bigger man than I am UA.
What happened at Sarge's? Out of the loop
Oh oh. Now I have to go find that video.
@@FancyPants208 The Waitress was EXTREMELY rude to him.
Because he was treated like a normal human and not the king of england it's disgusting treatment? You need to get over yourself.
@@justicedemocrat9357 its not normal for a waitress to make a big deal out of a customer wanting to sit in the main dining room where other customers are sitting
Keep it simple just pastrami on rye with mustard and pickles on the side, if you get that hobby's delivers, not everything on the menu is good. If you had done that you would have been happier with the food.
Hey UA, in Philly we call that a "special". So we order a lot of Corn Beef Specials. You can also get Roast Beef and Turkey as well. I never heard of a Pastrami Special, but I'm sure that works too.
Time to do your own LOGO.
Could you please try Pastrami Queen, Upper East Side NYC. Thank you
Just eat the pastrami by itself. It's absolutely delicious. Another place for a tasty pastrami sandwich downtown Newark is Market City. Very affordable sub sandwich that's tasty.
Can you please describe your filming gear? If your easily spotted my guess is you'd get a much better sandwich than a regular person. As a nyc resident.
Hello UA
Katz's is the best.
I got two pizzerias for you to review, both are in my top five
New Park Pizza in Howard Beach. (Queens)
Lenny and John's in (Brooklyn) Flatbush.
Glad your feeling better UA.
Have a great 4th 🎉
I can tell you from experience, that chicken soup was almost certainly a legit broth cooked in house. It just might have been a weak broth. The pastrami looked good, but as you say it needs mustard. I do love pastrami/corned beef with a good slaw but it also HAS to have mustard. The spicy deli mustard of course. And unlike many of the other places you've been to, I'd say at least for the price the portions are generous - some places the prices are insane AND you get smaller portions. So at least you get (mostly) value for money here.
Delibee's/Mayfair Tavern, 7 mins from YUL! :D
Go on mate!
Deli King in Clark NJ…that’s my favorite
Should have gone to Cooper's Liquor & Deli when in Newark. I believe they use Newark's own Best's Provision Pastrami and Corned Beef.
You should try a Sloppy Joe when in NJ. Town Hall Deli, etc.
A loose meat sandwich from @ " Made Rite", in IA.❤
Next time you are in Hong Kong, try Mortys Deli. Its pretty good. Cant match up to those top NY places, but good and unusual for Hong Kong to have a jewish style deli.
Always go Kaiser Roll. When you eat Pastrami & Corn beef on the same sandwich the Pastrami always takes over the sandwich.
UA, you are the Dave Portnoy of Deli and Matzo ball soup reviews. I am still trying to refine how I make it at home. What I make is good but not dialed in the way I want it to be yet.
Brisket is the call at Hobby's.
Someone else mentioned it, and I agree… Poking around that sandwich with your fingers was disgusting!
Maybe try other types of foods or other dishes at these sort of spots. Steak, sandwich, steak sandwich
They should really update their menu instead of being kinda rude about it 👀
To compare to Katz and Langers and Hobby's you should have gotten straight pastrami sandwich with mustard. With coleslaw on the side. Then gotten a corned beef sandwich to take home. In the old days at Katz\s the only pastrami sandwich they served was pastrami on rye. You added mustard if you wanted to. They also served you a bowl of complementary cucumber and green tomato pickles. To eat with your pastrami or corned beef sandwich._________Drinking a can of Dr Browns Cel-ray soda was a must. It is celery flavored____________ Try Katz knockwurst with sauerkraut sometime. It is an MVP. It is like a large fat garlicy spicy hot dog. Used to eat them all the time.
You are a class act, sir! Even with that rude waitress.
At 9:51. Is there a black floater in the water?
Plus the egg cream glass looks gooey and dirty on the back and bottom of glass. Could be syrup…one hopes.
@@KFCalif What syrup though? He ordered vanilla. Must have been chocolate left over from a previous guest 🤮
@@SeraphimLeo. Maybe! But I’ve seen vanilla syrup that looks a little golden. Either way it looked dirty.
its from the black pepper he added into matzo soup and got carried over to his water cup 7:58
Similar to Langers number 13
it’s starting to get very predictable with pastrami and steakhouse reviews now 😂
I always like the variety of different reviews, I agree good to keep different types of restaurants being featured
@velmano9191 I totally agree with you. The annoying lip smacking in every video is becoming disturbing for lack of a better word, and the constant use of his fingers throughout the sandwich, especially with the coleslaw and mayonnaise all over the meat and his fingers is just downright disgusting. I’ve never seen any other food blogger with such off putting habits, it’s hard to watch. I think I’m about done with these videos.
Cya🤙🏽
I agree totally! He's always fondling the food, even bread, really .other food bloggers that I watch never do that and they dont compare to the other place of same. And he needs to get a manicure! Hes cuticles are gross ....def not a fine diner guy by far .... no sophistication at all .....😮😮
Hey UA, could it be you needed to add salt to the Matza Ball Soup bcuz of your cold you had? Maybe your taste buds were not up to par then.
Total bullshit. You should be ashamed.
Was there dirt in the glass of water?
You had a northern NJ sloppy Joe. It’s unique to the area
You should try the chocolate next time.
I think regular chicken soup, home made, is more healing for colds.
Dang,. for $22,.. I'd be eating that over 2 or 3 days.
thats expensive for a sandwich 22.00
One day you’ll find your perfect meal!
Pastrami Grill in Garfield is the best in the state
Hobbys isn't in the Katz league. That's the way it is.
You know, you should have had a plain pastrami, a plain corned beef, and put the mustard on it, and tried them like that. I think the different flavors piled into one sandwich were distracting especially with Russian dressing and coleslaw.
That looks more like a traditional Jewish deli than somewhere like Katz's which looks like a cafeteria or Carnegie which looks like a diner. Part of the experience is the metal bowl of complimentary pickles on the table that you didn't touch. You get half sour, full sour and then pickled tomatoes.
Some of it has to do with the quality of the rye bread. If the rye bread isn't soft and slightly chewy, it throws off the sandwich. A lot of ryebreads now are full of preservatives and weird ingredients that throw off the taste. The value there looked very good compared to a lot of other places. That looked like a pound of meat.
Russian dressing and coleslaw in the sandwich? Never ever for me.
55th 👍 Hi UA! Good morning
No pickle review?
Firstly, nothing compares to Katz's, but for the record, any deli sandwich, pastrami, corn beef or otherwise has to be consumed with the sourest pickles you can find, and in addition, the deli mustard at Katz's can be added to the sandwich even with Russian Dressing to give it that bite that major deli needs..also pastrami goes better with turkey than corn beef...just my opinion but i've been around the food business for over 45 years so i've lent my opinion here
Isn’t the Matzo ball really just a dumpling?
🤔
That sandwich was stacked compared to anyone else's sandwich and more reasonably priced
Digging the music!
I went to 2nd Ave Deli in NYC last month after watching your review, and I've gotta say, I'm not sure what's so great about the pastrami sandwich there. It's almost $30, was served only lukewarm, and was tender but not particularly flavorful. Not sure what you like so much about it? There are better pastrami sandwiches where I live here in Minnesota.
Minnesota?
Are you confusing delicatessen with smorgasbord?
I don't remember Garrison Keillor eating corned beef in Lake Wobegon.
UA, how about some lutefisk with your matzo balls?

I am old enough and wise enough to know that is not all in Minnesota, especially in the big city of Minneapolis. You have some very interesting people working in the newsroom: Mary Richards, Lou Grant, Murray Slaughter, and Ted Baxter and known to them: Phyllis Lindstrom, Rhoda Morgenstern, Sue Ann Nivens, and Georgette Franklin.
Perhaps Rhoda Morgenstern has a good recommendation for a deli?
