In the classic movie "Umrao Jaan," Rekha's portrayal of the courtesan is elevated to a whole new level by Kathak's grace. The song,”In aankhon ki masti ke” has to be perhaps the most well-known Mujra song of all time in Bollywood. Rekha's emotive Kathak movements brings to life, the poignant tale of love and longing.
Music composer Khayyam, who tended to just a few movies in the decade, made memorable music in this movie. The sweet and meaningful lyrics of Shahariar combined with the voice of Asha Bhonsle who was well known for singing only fast songs, sang this song with great passion. Rekha earned National Film Award for Best Actress and singer Asha Bhosle earned National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for this movie. The iconic song was stylised and choreographed by Padma Bhushan Smt. Kumudini Lakhia of Lucknow Gharana and Gopi Krishna of Banaras Gharana.
