Great roundup, and THANK YOU so much for the shout out!! I'm also excited to get to Lojman. I just finished The Long Form and I'm obsessed with it. It sounds plotless, but I think it actually proves that you can turn a day of trying to get a baby to sleep into a plot, and that caretaking is in fact a deeply creative act. HOWEVER, it is interspersed with lots and lots of essay-like sections. It was totally my cup of tea, but I can see how it isn't for everyone!
Ah, that helpless feeling when a book is near yet so far. I hate when there's a book knocking about in the states for like $7 and i can get in the uk in 10 months or around £50 from a third-party seller. Usually happens with smaller preses.
Love the sound of Breaking and Entering.
Really great of you to draw attention to small presses. Cool.
Thanks for this video. Its really helpful 😊 I have Landscapes so will be reading that soon. The other two that really stand out to me are cross stitch and fifteen stories so I'll try to get copies of them too.
The Birthday Party was my top read of 2023! A very unique and compelling thriller that is wonderfully written, with tons of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat. When I first started it, I thought that there was no way the author could sustain the form, but it was a page turner, and it flew by too quickly. I hope you give it a try! 📕
The one about the cows going mad reminds me of the novel with the cow Greek chorus from the Woman’s Prize list a couple years ago. Evidently weird acting cows is a trend now! 😂
Lojman, Of Cattle and Men and My Work are all now on my TBR! What a fab mix of books! A few here that may well hit the Booker international longlist I reckon!
I’d missed the longlist of this coming out, so thanks for the update matey!!
Yeah, I'm definitely checking the dates for some of these and also the Dublin literary awards longlist for the booker international.
I’m 50 pages into Lai’s Landscapes. I’m enjoying its ethereal, elegiac quality… but I don’t think it’s for you.
all of your insta nopes were my instant yeses!!!!
maybe this a good tactic to find new interesting books
Haha, I'm very glad I can be of use to you. 😁
Independent press And Other Stories released Gerald Murnane’s Inland. Excellent and from an Australian.
I have a copy of The Long Form on the way and am interested in Cross-stitch, Loj Man, Breaking and Entering, the Tigris one,
Breaking and Entering sounds SO GOOD! I will have to get that one.
The End of August sounds fascinating but most reviews I've read weren't great, so I'll wait until someone I follow recommends it
I naturally gravitate to this type of book. I will follow the prize in both UK and US. I was not familiar with it previously. This is very exciting news to me! Thank you so much, Scott!
Isn't it an interesting prize?
@@GunpowderFictionPlot CAN’T WAIT to get started!
“ 500 words of hell no !”😂🤣
The Birthday Party is the only one I’ve heard of before. It might be the only one I read.
☘️👋🍀📖📚🇮🇪📕☕️
Breaking and Entering, Landscapes, Cross-Stitch and Lojman all sound promising. My Work and The Long Form sound like they may explore some similar themes and I'm intrigued. I do like short stories and Barcode sounds interesting as well.
Breaking and Entering... book club, please
Deal! I'll put it in the next vote.
Breaking And entering is now on my TBR! I want to read landscapes but it's only available in Hardcover, not on kindle
How good does Breaking and Entering sound?
Im sure Landscapes will come out on eBook soon, they're just making coin on that hardcover.
This is such a cool award! Thanks for making me aware of it.
On the dialect vs. language thing…in Spanish it’s quite similar to English.
These would be the comparisons I’d come up with for to help you understand the differences:
Spain = England
Argentina = Ireland
Mexico = Southern USA
Cuba = Scottish Brogue or a thick Welsh accent
Dominican Republic = South Africa
Chile = New Zealand
Puerto Ricans = Australia
So I guess think about yourself as a Native English speaker from Australia. Do you think you could adequately translate something I as a Californian wrote? Odds are with a bit of research into slang, you’d do a pretty good job, but you might occasionally miss a bit of nuance. Now, think about whether you’d be able to translate South African English or Welsh English. I feel like it starts to get sort of case by case.
Thank you. That is such a cool way of explaining it, I get it now. 😊
😊💗😊 - when i was reading your love is not good i did think the synopsis/blurb kinda sucked.... i think it gives away too much and it makes it seem idk more cerebral than it is or something.... im still not sure u would like the novel tho, i think it has potential ! lojman looks very interesting ! i love how we both are anti-short stories haha
Not just you 😂- that sentence doesn’t make sense to me either. Of Cattle And Men is sitting on my nightstand unread RN. A lot of potential bangers, ty once again for another TBR 🔌 📖🪱💚
I'm very glad that it wasn't just me that was confused by that sentence.
Wondering what the decision was for the choice of your channel name. Best wishes.
It comes from Gunpowder, Treason and Plot. Guy Fawkes and the plot to blow up parliament. It's not a particularly special event, I just like the story of it, thought the channel name sounded good and I enjoyed how plot has two meanings.
👍👍👍👍
I know you don’t like to read bad science in fiction - me too! - so I’m already triggered by the cover of Out of Earth - if it is set in Brazil why does the cover show a group of ‘old world’ vultures that are found in Africa and Asia? The vultures of South America are completely unrelated and look quite different!
