Hailed the queen of neo-soul on her arrival in 1997, with the multiplatinum Baduizm, she shrugged off the apparent demise of the genre, instead of going deeper and weirder with the incredible New Amerykah Part I album in 2007, for which she enlisted such Academy stalwarts as Madlib, Sa-Ra and 9th Wonder.
In this lecture at the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy, she muses on success, art, motherhood, and control - and does some pretty good impressions of “kindred spirits” Madlib and Dilla.

Gonna braid my hair to this later.
SoulfulChaos Just finished braiding mine to this...

braiding my hair to this now lol
Washed & deep conditioned my hair to this ☀️
I love this woman. I love her voice, her silly & funny personality, her humbleness, & not to mention she's sexy as hell. Something about her confidence & her being so comfortable being herself. Ah. Love it
+Xavier I second the motion!
I couldn't have said it better myself - sitting her listening to her at work and her voice is memorizing alone
She is so cool!
She is the perfect embodiment of the energy of the High Priestess in Tarot
ALLLLLLLLLLL OF THAT SHE IS 226 MY QUEEN MY TWIN 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😊😙😙😙😙🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
"Once I do the music it doesn't belong to me any more. It belongs to the world." -- EB
Her voice is so soothing
this interviewer is really good. his ego is so much in the back seat. he's a true facilitator. and lets the artist be the artist.
his (he's) ego is gone
@@patricesankara3081 his name is Egon.
She comes alive when she talks about her children.
would love to hear the raw tape of 'On n On"
I'm from Mexico and i remember the first time i heard the Baduizm CD,1997 i was working with this black dudes cleaning apartments in So. Illinois, one guy brought a boom box with this album and blasted this CD i was like wth, then i went to the record shop and bought my copy and been into EB music ever since.
Jesús Samaniego I remember the first time I heard on and on the radio. I was driving by LAX listening to KJLH. I too went out and bought Baduism. I met her once. Great convo
Love it
@@cloudz5426 thank you.
Thank you Egon for giving Erykah the space to talk. I felt like I was sitting in her living room.💞
ha true... many ppl criticized the interviewer but it is so great to just relax and listen to her
~53:00 her live mixing is on point imo
He was on point with his knowledge of her too!
Why is everyone hating on the interviewer? He's giving her room to breath, she was able to speak...which is what we all wanted. Most interviews now are 2min frivolities consisting of questions such as "what did you have for breakfast?" or "how's the new album going?". This was her chance to shed light on the past, and she did. So shhhh.
H.J.W because they don’t know who the interviewer is
@@JustLooped The interviewer is Madlibs right hand man but still that shouldn't change anyone's perspective on how they felt just because they find out later who he is.That would be fake lol
Because unfortunately their racist
@@andrewcecce Not specially racists but clueless about the great opportunity they have before their eyes in interviewing a genious...
Egon knows his stuff, this was more of a conversation than an interview
The guy who's interviewing her is Egon and he knows his music. Sorry y'all don't know him but he's official. Just look him up before you past judgement. Erykah is a true artist and her music has changed my life. Especially Mamas Gun.
Hes madlib righthand man
Neltron8000 he started stones throw right?
@@MrJHT49 no. that was pbwolf but egon and madlib are just as vital to stones throw.
Mama’s Gun is phenomenal, man. Truly incredible. See it like a sibling record to D’Angelo’s Voodoo, especially in how ambitious and transcendent both LP’s are.
@@MrJHT49 Think it was Peanutbutter Wolf but he may have something to do with it
This is probably one of her most relaxed interviews
I feel she embodies an era
Did I miss something? The interviewer seems fine to me, he actually knows what he is talking about and asking GREAT questions. Erykah wouldn't be there if she didn't even respect the dude, she doesn't do interviews at all.
atlsuperstar It was just that he tripped over some awkward thoughts in the interview I think. Its ok but... I think that's what happened
+atlsuperstar this is Egon from Stones Throw Records, it's a family thing :P
I agree- he even mentioned being in the studio while the collaboration of Common's electric circus ...I think she knows and respects him.
+KINGHARDHEADED he mentioned a few wrong answers about her history
SOCIAL CHAMELEON what do you mean she doesn't do interviews at all? There are interview clips with her all over CZcams.
If you pay attention she is dropping knowledge bout the music business.
I can feel her ENERGY & VIBE.
you can hear the hurt when she speaks about Dilla. When she says "He didn't even tell me he was sick" you can hear it.
You people BUY anything. She had enough balls to mock and pester him about frivolous things, but no balls to have a one and one with him after she heard he had lupus!? RUBBISH, she's just another selfish artist wou UNDERSTAND how to appeal to her audience emotions. Same way she manipulates her men. You people are SLOW and comedic all at once.
@@theone424 you good bro?
@@shawnmcclymont6610 MORE than good!!
@@theone424 this Commons burner account💀💀
Why would you say that... Why. Please tell me if that was necessary or not. As a matter of fact who are you?
The interviewer is dope. I like him. Erykah is super dope.
the things she says, she sounds like Prince.
Erykah is an extended family friend.
My wife introduced Roy Hargrove to the world.
Erykah's God mom used to take her to see my wife perform.
South Dallas is in fact a vast reservoir of jazz and R&B talent, to wit, Cedar Walton, James Earl Clay, Shirley McFatter, Roger Boykin, David Fathead Newman, and on and on and on. I love E, she is a Goddess and a National Treasure!
Thats dope. I'm a professor and I'm trying to write an article on the place of "Africa" for these artists. I wondered if you knew anything about her heritage beyond the important southern African American sensibility? I read once that her mother was part Nigerian but also heard that refuted. Is she part Nigeria? Thanks ahead of time. Also, is your wife an artist? Are you related to Shirley McFatter? Thanks in advance and yes South Dallas is dope.
She is quite honest and authentic in her music because you don't see her clamoring do duets with J-Lo Beyonce, Mariah Carey or any other really famous jazz artists. I understand where her style musically. And I'm glad she mentioned that people are patient with her process as an artist because that's how we've ended up with her style of music because it really is her style.. it's not jazz... it's not funk... it's her! Xo
That song "Didn't You Know is so beautiful to this day.
The hat is giving me life
what a blessing to have your life's work be your therapy, your religion and make you just feel good!
yes isn't that special. and her work heals so many of us.
Egon for the misinformed. Very important interview. Ms.Badu is VERY aware of who is interviewing her. No need to bash anyone. Just inform and keep it pushin'. Peace
To the R&B world he is questioned. To the underground hip hop world familiar with Stones Throw and Madlib, his presence is unquestionable. Interesting, she commands both worlds to reconnect with each other. She's preplanned this.
I have always loved Erykah. I could listen to her sing all day and night, her AND Lauryn Hill. I miss them.
Erykah never left playa, she got a mixtape coming out next week! :)
+Miguel Kelly Dats what's up. Gotta cop that. And I know she never left actually she is supposed to host the next soul train music awards. But preciate the info, i didn't know about the mixtape
They're still here. GOOD music never goes away
yezsuh' ✊🏿
I love her, she doesn't even need prompt from the interviewer, she just tells her stories and they're amazing.
A whole 2 hours of Erykah Badu talking and playing some music? This is one of my favourite videos on the internet ❤❤❤
That’s cool that Erykah’s day ones were still with her at this point. Most artists blow up and leave those that started out with them behind.
Her voice is so soft and smooth and she's so beautiful!
Feeling her energy and vibe during this. Def caught a tear hearing her talking about dilla
what a piece of legend is this woman! such an honor listening to her stories, influences, balances between art and life... What a QUEEN
This woman is a LEGEND. I applied this year and I hope I get chosen
She is giving a mini show on the low her music + DJ skills.
The way she talks about family and children is absolutely beautiful. You can see it in her eyes
Wow. A new found respect for Erykah after watching this video. What a complete Boss-Woman, hell yes.
Erykah's energy exudes throughout... 💫💎
It's about the chemistry... it fell flat on this interview. He may be full of musical knowledge, but he and the audience just don't have that vibe....
Erykah is just amazing. She just has so much to say, and yet sometimes by not saying something she still makes you think. Love her!
1:42:21 "Hello"
Badu in English accent: "Helleuu" 😂😂😂😂😂
I'm in love 😍 with this woman.
same 😁💕
+Furious Turner 👍😎
You and me both Bruh.... She is so damn dope
Ditto
EB raises the bar on SO many levels. Excellent interviewer. Thank you.
I enjoy this type of interviews so much... Get to know her tastes, her stories about Dilla, her ascension... And she's so genuine and honest about what she does, I think that is real art... I connected specially with the connection she has with different forms of art, when she says growing up doing dance and art were the place where she felt happy... I'm just happy that she exists and that we can hear what she has to say, love her
Been following her career since the very beginning, and years ago got a chance to meet her in the aftershow. I was glad to see how cool and down to earth she actually is.
Peace and blessings always, Ms. Badu.
That look erykah gave when the girl asked for silence 😂😂😂She was like “Have some of what?” 😂😂😂😂
The best two hours of my life.
I think this interview was so insightful, we really got to hear some major details within a quiet and respectful forum. At first I thought the interviewer was not bringing out the most in her with his lack of questioning but if you JUST and ONLY listen as if it was a radio interview the feeling changes. I'd advise everyone to go back to hear without WATCHING while he asks questions, it's clear he knows her well and understands what pops her to elaborate or trail off into a very personal place. She is enjoying the vibe in this interview.... Other times when the interviewer is too chatty she becomes closed off and uses sarcasm or gets sharp tongued as we black sisters can do at times to put the ball in our court -but she only does this once when an audience member's question asks about another artist (DeAngelo).... She remarked "he's studying quantum physics " I believe that was the only time she seems perturbed. ...and seriously why would anyone ask that during another persons moment??
Love this sister and she wearing this hat
Been following Badu since her beginning: alongside D'Angelo, she's the most innovative and unique American artist of the past 30 years.
The interviewer is well spoken and well versed ! He knows his stuff !
I love Ms. Badu. She is my beloved homie... People (at home) were also praying for her success, i.e. Isis, Madukwu, etc. She entered the market and became number 1, and rightfully so... But prayers, family, and friends also had a small bit of her success.
I'm just browsing through the comments and I can only assume most people haven't seen her do many interviews. There was an old one she did on Conan(or maybe Letterman, it was right when she put her first CD out) and she talked how she used to write for comedy and proceeded to kill the whole thing with her off the wall and snappy humour. It's still one of my favorite interviews and I'm not surprised she got cast in that film with Duchovny as a mostly unseen person talking to a younger version of his character. This woman is amazing.
She is so well ballanced.
The most chill smooth interview I have ever seen. Remarkable job......👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I'd just like to point out that around 1:15 she mentions frequency... All things have a frequency. Frequency is also a tool radio and tv stations use. Remember, "guns don't kill people, people kill people" applies to all tools. It depends on the users' intentions. She intends to use frequency to free people. Of course it won't get radio play. They'd tweak it anyway. Just saying. And this is from 2011. Google 432 Hz.
The whole vibe of this group of people is the epitome of music to me. Free, flowing, vibrant, and transcendent. We all know J D took that white bus up high. Shit gets me on the verge of tears and goosebumps on my body.
That J Dilla story made me shed a tear and I don't even know him. But Erykah speaks some real deep stories that makes you just want to listen, no talking whatsoever. Sometimes, I have my moments when I'm talking to myself. Well, I don't even want to say that because I do be talking to someone, it's just nobody else can see them. Then my mom will ask who you talking to and I just be like myself. Then one time I told her i'm talking to an imaginary friend that can only understand me better than anyone can.
Erykah is such a down to earth, humble artist that’s extremely passionate & talented musically. It was nice listening to her, & hearing the questions from the audience. When she 1st came out I was like WOW, she’s incredible & singing about things that make so much sense!
Love her wonderful personality...Her vibe is always positive and always creative...Love her...
EryKah got a choked up by sharing silence with that girl, beautiful moment...
It's funny, I didn't notice the host, I was just wrapped up in what Erykah was saying...then I noticed...Egon! hahahah
Here after the Erykah Badu Verzuz Jill Scott celebration on IG.
Didnt Cha Know is still one of my fav songs. Dope hearing the back story and that she learned to sample on THAT song with Dilla!! I also have been living with Lupus for over 20 years; that' Telephone story almost took me out. Badu is so sweet; the love for her friend is still so real. The best Christmas gift!! Thank you YT Recommended!!
just based on the title i know this joint bouta be GOOD
this is my first in the Erykah Badu Interview rabbit hole and im just hoping the interviewer does her justice
He does it’s chill!
I love “I Want You”!! Especially that ended I would love more of that. I also love how she chopped it up here omg she’s so musical inclined
Had my cassette tape @ 11 yrs old, singing along w/ the lil booklet. Erykah has been singing to my soul for 24 yrs. U inspire me💜 #AnalogGirlInaDigitalWorld
I could listen to Badus voice all day
She is a legend in my opinion.
16:02 was dope how she scratched the record
She is so charming💕
at 52:00 she shows her true prowess as a creative soul and outwardly expressing entity.
INTRIGUING WOMAN..SO CLASSY, WELL SPOKEN, TRUE ENTERTAINER IN THIS GAME, BADU YOU ARE HIP HOP AND THANK YOU FOR YOU CONTRIBUTION TO THE CULTURE..SHE IS TRULY A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH, PEACE AND LOVE MY SISTA, LOVE U MUCH❤✌

eryka badu is soooo beautiful
Man she is talented ❤
Wow the world has changed, shed have a completely different croud nowadays, keep the love, blessing and protection Badu 🙏👑
A really enjoyable talk with the 'Mama Badu', with loads of interesting tidbits as well as more personal memories and thoughts shared a plenty. And yeah, she did claim 400 beats per month for illustrious Mr. Jackson Jr's output, at a point therein..
The 400 beats quote is @ 1:02:34 onwards (as Badu's reply to the interviewer's commentary on her '08 release 'The Healer', and Madlib's beats being part of its production, and at his general marveling at how prolific a beat-maker this guy is)
50:50 Erykah Badu - I Want You (Chopped & Sped up) 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
She is super dope... this dude doing this interview: Just how???
Such a true artist with her music to her visuals I love Erkyah Badu ❤️
Beautiful! We must learn to get used to different and unique approaches to journalism. Broaden your awareness..
E. Badu is the truth! I love her music!
Erykah Badu, one of those forces of Nature! An Artist and person to look up to... Hats-off, girl! Obsessed with all these lectures right now!!! Thank you guys for them! :)
Erykah low-key mentioned how Madlib makes 400 beats a month. Madlib....more like madman. Most of which probably won't see the light of day.
Source?
Watch the video. I distinctly remember her saying '400' somewhere around the point where they were talking about Madlib dishing out beats like a machine. I forgot the exact point, but I know the general topic of conversation they were at.

This is one of my favorite discoveries!
I loved the silence question and then the question about change and evolving over time. She really connected with those questions.
Erykah!! I just love her!! For being natural, happy & free!!
She's different, & she's not hiding from who she be. That's deep, worst ,when then world is watching. However, she's who she is.
Don't, get it twisted, I don't wanna be her. I'm definitely gonna do me!
Inspired if u ask/asked me!
What's wrong with society?! But I'll rather be me!
I've also love Erykah & that will ALWAYS BE... but who am I to say, when she's just really she! #IrespectThat #UniquenessIsDifferent... #ILove whoIsee & her music! #WeThinkAlike.. just keeping it real.
Loved the interview. That moment of silence was amazing.
She is such an inspiration to me eye love her so much her spirit is so humble eye just love everything about her..her voice, her uniqueness, her knowledge omg eye have to go see her in concert eye think eye might cry the whole time. Islam Moabitess😇😘 who else to look up to besides erykah badu vibrations are strong my sister loveable so sincere eye love ittt👑💞❗💯💯💯
OK this is making me go listen to a bunch of Erykah records.
GENIUS...mtu mzuri...asante sana....HETEP......
How has THIS interview only received 168k views? Such a shame....Such an AMAZING woman and interview.. 💙💙
The good ol days, back when you could cough to clear your throat.
Badu is a revolutionary, loved hearing her speak for so long.
much love to badu and egon. these lectures are fantastic.
I LOVE ERYKAH BADU ❤👍
I'll definitely meet her in the next life, what a spirit
RIP Dilla, erykah put me on to him
"Treats" are the musical versions of "Tweets". It is so reminiscent to hear Erykah mention "hyperspace", a word I learned while in school, the 2nd time, to complete my undergrad in the early 90's. So great to hear this interview because the Baduizm effect still resonates in my spirit. I'm amazed & even more impressed to see how Erykah is ageing/maturing. I believe she's going to be a professor sometime soon as this video is like a Master Class. Her wisdom & experience is so compelling to me. Loving this lady!!! Wow! Loved when she said, "I wrote that", in response to "Did you sing on 'Jimmy was a Rock Star'? ". I always thought she was an ATL girl from her accent, cause I grew up in NC, but Dallas is okay too. Final comment - definitely a creative multigenre artist: Blues, Neo Soul, Hip-Hop, Jazz, R&B - what did I miss?
This is a great interview!
Fantastic event and interview! Thanks for posting!
