Which would devalue your project basically completely, because as an indie you get most of your audience and supporters during the development. Basically the big N shows the fans the big F.U. I don't think there's a gamer on this planet who wasn't at awe with the fact that N64 can actually do Portal, it basically makes the console next gen if not next 2 gens, which is only beneficial for Nintendo... But they are so feared for their relentless pursuits of fans, that even Valve had to kill off the project first lol.
In any case, the case of N64 capabilities has already been shown, in a way the project is complete. It's just not released. And James now has loyal audience. So it's not like his livelihood got destroyed or we lost what this project was about.

It's a total sh1t show, but I understand Valves worry - one mans two years of work can't compare to work of and livelihood of 1,139 people (as of 2022 anyway).
But they can't take away the experience James has gained, and it's practical too - even today, and especially with the advent of AI assistance, there are
people coming out with 1:1's in computer science who's idea of optimisation is changing a concrete definition with type, to the "var" keyword.
Barely a clue about understanding the memory model, or timings of a machine to get your code working so well.
Don't get me wrong, I ain't ''dissing them; it's just not how its taught anymore.
Is it any surprise that some of the best innovators in our field are not classically trained, and/or they're self taught?
Bill Gates dropped out to write for the Altair. Steve Wozniak (I think), Linus Torvalds, Russ Suvetar, John Carmack, John Harris ... All self taught, or at least they
got the basics at school and cut their teeth whilst hacking away at their own leisure to wrangle the secrets of the *machine*.
But, James has a community of 62.2 *THOUSAND* who don't have a risk in their jobs and worry about the next meals provender ;-)
We can build this, make it even better and come together in love and harmony!! Heh, perhaps we'll even find the solution to World Peace along the way!

The problem with Valve "taking the target on their back" for him is how big it could end up being-- just the uncertainty alone even. It's not like Nintendo would just ask for a couple thousand and they both go their own way. I don't even think it's specifically Nintendo, but knowing who they'd be up against certainly made their decision quicker. What would be epic is if Valve got permission for him, but that's more a silly fantasy. At the very least the Valve guys probably loved the project.

Valve could get money from licencing the media files and trademark. But they won't. Nintendo could get money from selling ROMs, as they do with games from other developers. But in this case they won't. Partly because Valve won't let them. Partly because Nintendo is the champion in the war on general computing.
He'd have to convince Nintendo to convince Valve that it is profitable for all of them. Entrepreneurial spirit: Do whatever you want, but monetise it. But it's not going to happen. At best they'll tell him what to port where instead if he wants to get paid, on a freelance basis so they don't have to pay him, but he has to pay a penalty if he doesn't deliver.
Yet again, something great is destroyed, not because it's not profitable, but because it's not profitable enough. By corporations who use software and infrastructure they could not possibly afford if it was sold at market prices.
Not surprising then that a study done by the U.S. patent office concluded that software piracy drives innovation. There is an entire economy that works because it doesn't use money, keeping the money economy alive, while the DMCA made "contempt of business model" a felony. Disruptive innovation? Yes please, just as long as it doesn't disrupt established industries.
      First step: Boil the oceans.

It gets even worse when you realise that code isn't supposed to be copyrightable in the first place and the patents if any are even applicable would have expired more than 5 years ago.
Edit: Code is copyrightable in some cases but Domain-specific languages are not and I don't know about Libultra's licence in particular but unless he is distributing Libultra itself it would be very hard to prove that he is using it without paying for it and if he did pay for it then it wouldn't even be copyright infringement also I am pretty sure it would fall under patten law anyway so it should be fair game to use it without a licence at this point so long as you don't use copyrighted assets that are within the sdk.
Honestly reading through all this legalese got really annoying and I probably still don't understand it but my gut says it should fall under patent law which only last 20 years but my heart says it shouldn't be copyrighted at all.
If he really wanted to avoid the issue though he could just switch to Libdragon which I know for a fact is public domain or at least it has a license that functions as if it were because apparently the law is so backwards and has so little thought put into it that no mechanism is in the law by which an owner of software can simply elect to place it in the public domain.

I bought Micro Mages on Steam
    it comes with NES ROM
it's still on Steam, so Nintendo seems to be ok with that

Subscribing now, was never super interested in the portal project although it was incredible to witness, but seeing you're working on an original project has me very excited!

Despite the project not being finished, you've done amazing work so far and that's something worth being celebrated. Looking forward to see what you manage to do next.

This is rough, but I’m excited to see what an original game made by you would look like!

I am sorry brother. I know what it's like to go through this. Something similar happened to me in 2021 (on a smaller scale because I only lost 8 months of work) WB games deleted all my videos due to a Batman Tim Burton Universe project that I am doing just as an exercise. They were right, but it wasn't easy for me, I loved that project.
Porting this (PORTAL) game to Nintendo 64 with everything that entails is simply a masterpiece. You are a crack!

Your work on Portal 64 was amazing. Sorry to hear it is ending. Seeing the box art in the last update was a thrill.
Hope you are taking it okay. It's really been something special. Thanks for sharing your passion with us

They would never have been able to go after you in Japan. Their parody laws are incredibly powerful

"Don't blame Valve." Nah, fuck that; I'm blaming the hell out of them. I'm so sick and tired of people bootlicking our corporate overlords and acting like they're somehow not in control of the shitty things they do, or can't be called out as long as they're not committing literal crimes.

Valve invented gaming. Pls, be more respectful to them. Without Valve there would be no Portal 64 at all.

Valve sucks money from gamers every day, for them to support James for 2 years of his life would mean a hair of their wealth. They could easily help James to end this project in libdragon, then later even sell the cartridge. But hey, little childs still sherish them because they are so good with developers, SUCKERS!
