Good stuff. I think this goes a ways towards explaining why aspects of JRad are just too busy to my ear. They have undeniable skill, but they don’t always swing in the spaces that Dead & Co. and Phil & Friends are willing to explore. Anyway, good to hear this as my own playing tends towards the minimal, though I do keep shooting for more speed in spots. It’s fine to find a pocket, though, and that’s the groove I get from this, Clif.
All of us, any of us, who have picked up a guitar and started playing these songs is "searching for the sound". Jerry's advice was to always play it the way you liked and not to go out and copy him or the Dead. And by doing this we experiment, play it our way. He'd like that. Yet when we go back and listen to Jerry after doing that, we discover something new in the way "he" was playing it and we're drawn to that. By this we come to understand he is still teaching us something about playing. Which he in turn was doing all the time with himself, learning from what he'd done, playing it different or the way he liked it at the next given moment, then hearing that in comparison to the way he "had" been playing "it". Always on an experimental journey with the music and the songs. Always searching for the sound. Of course all of that and the idea of setting us up with the simple, then blowing us away with the fire when it came! Point counterpoint, note, not note, now you see me now you don't, and a dash of knowing something you won't ever know!
@@vedantus And thank you Cliff for posting the video that you were uncertain of. My thoughts above would not have come out if you had not posted! You’re uncertainty gave me clarity.
As someone who hasn’t quite fell into the dead community yet but has been a dead fan since 15 (21 now), this channel makes me feel like there are people who are like me and understand. Thank you and my full respect! This lesson was just what I needed today, loving the concepts here :)
I have been playing forever - and this over complication - as you have so competently described - is absolutely true. And if you use a looper - it is best with simple phrases - too much is too much! ;) Good on yah brother - looking forward.
@@vedantus my internet is not so great out here in the country, just whenever you get a chance I think we would all love to see another video! Thanks Clif
Hey cliff. I always wondered why the tiger guitar has two power cable input jacks. I see you are only.using one. Does your clone have the same electronic guts as Irwin's?
The bottom one is a stereo send and receive. So when I play with my band I have a three part cord , the bottom stereo sends out a full strength signal independent of the volume control that goes through all my effects and then back into the guitar... that means for sensitive pedals like the mutton I can get the trigger level set and it won't vary no matter what I do on the list shaping ... then that signal gets shaped by volume tone, pickups choice, single vs double coil etc and then out the top jack to the amp....when I am doing my lessons I switch the guitar to just straight out, bypassing then preamp and bottom jack...
2 people left comments that I got but don't show here, and both of them had a hashtag... could FPSjDOG50 or Tanitansy try a short hello without a hashtag and let's see if it shows the comment...

ooooh, good idea!

Yeah, there are a lot of crazy jam bands that go for crescendo after crescendo and it creates a fatigue that makes me be done after four of them...

You’re a Shredder man, thanks.
More like a cheese grater... graterful dead
I like these conceptual lessons just as much as song lessons. And speaking of day job, that’d be a great one to do a lesson on!
You are right!
Hey clif! Thanks for the lesson🙂
Its been a hard lesson to learn to leave more space

Glad to hear it! I wasn't going to post it but got encouraged by some replies to put everything up , so glad it worked for you!
More of these, very helpful, thanks!

Thats my dude Cliff!
Heydi heidi ho!
Awesome lesson. Great playing.
Its like hacky sack... instead of rushing at the sack you chill back and let it land on your foot... same feeling

@@thomasbombadil8190 Yes, and also when playing with others less is more
Awesome! Where’d you get the guitar?
Phiga Guitars, Texas

Hey clif, awesome lesson as always! I would love to see your take on One more Saturday night with both Bobby and Jerry’s sections! Thanks man 🤘
Did you mean both parts separated or playing both parts simultaneously?
@@vedantus just breaking down their parts separately
@@FPSjDOG50 I could do that video, and/or Skype with you and show the two parts

Vaguely remember Jerry talking about the space between the notes are the most important parts of the song. Anyways keep on trucking.
Yes that is most true of both him and miles Davis

This one definitely shows.... why would a hashtag make a difference?
Ooops, just saw that this is from a year ago, it came across my bow now for some reason
Standard E tuning? I'm a new guitar player, I learned sitting in limbo from your videos thanks
Hmmm maybe.... I always use standard e tuning but our band plays and practices in 444 instead of 440, so it might be off by a little from your guitar
Thanks bro, ist that the real Tiger?
A real tiger, not THE... same in every way but Jerry never touched this one
