The Last Starfigther is one of those movies you miss from your childhood or teenager years and not because it was a blockbuster or because the actors were famous or something like this, but just because you have a emotional relationship with it. 9r9rdOde
Some other movies have grown into you after some years specially movies from the 80s. Probably you have the same feeling I do, it's a mix of nostalgia and magic. Weird isn't?
The Last Starfighter is a 1984 American space opera film directed by Nick Castle.
The film tells the story of Alex Rogan made by actor Lance Guest, a teenager recruited by an alien defense force to fight in an interstellar war. It also features Robert Preston, Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, Norman Snow, and Kay E. Kuter.
The Last Starfighter, along with Disney's Tron, has the distinction of being one of cinema's earliest films to use
extensive "real-life" computer-generated imagery (CGI) to depict its many starships, environments and battle scenes.
The Last Starfighter was Robert Preston's final role in a theatrical film. The character of Centauri, a "lovable con-man",
was written with him in mind and was a nod to his most famous role as Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man.
There was a subsequent novelization of the film by Alan Dean Foster, as well as a video game based on the
production. In 2004, it was also adapted as an off-Broadway musical.

I remember how much I loved this movie when it was released in the 80s. The special effects certainly don’t hold up anymore but it’s still very enjoyable to watch today.
You left out Grannie. The actress was a Telosian back when they made "The Cage" pilot episode of Star Trek.

I agree! But...I tried to get my kids, 14 and 9 years old, to watch it, they made it 15 minutes and couldn't accept the special effects. I reasoned with them about the storyline, the characters, etc. they don't care. It just feels too outdated to them. So I enjoyed watching it alone!
One oversight on this list that i feel needs mentioning, is the actress who played Maggy’s Granny. The actress was Meg Wiley, who was probably most famous for playing the Keeper in Star Treks pilot episode “The Cage” aka The Menagerie ep 1 and 2

@@cinemapop it’s a shame I wasnt a writer on DS9. I would have had a Last starfighter video game on the space station! Probably in one of Quarks Holosuites. They never did anything fun like that. Except in some time travel episodes that never made sense. Star Trek is the worst when it comes to time travel!

Growing up this was one of my favorite movie to watch and funny as hell and it had a serious side to it
They need to make this happen. The Last Star Fighter was one of my childhood favourites.
Blending today's cgi/vfx with the continued story would create a great movie.
I'd be happy for the Russell duo to be a part of it, so far they have both been excellent in Monarch, so I would imagine they would be great in a sequel to this movie too..

Right, but you can barely see him. Only in some scenes where they were fooling around or at the end when you see him for 2 secs

It had it's flaws, but this was such a great movie for people growing up in this era. Like anything was possible. If they ever remake this it better be perfect!

I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid and liked it. I totally didn’t remember Wil Wheaton was in it though! Crazy how many actors from this movie went on to have rolls in Star Trek though!

After 40 years, Alex Rogan returns to theaters as The Last Starfighter.
Dan O'Herlihy is also famous for his role as The Old Man CEO on Robocop.
I found an anniversary edition of this film on DVD some time ago and it included a making of featurette that caught up with a few of the actors from the film including the leads. It was really interesting to see how they turned out.
The book Armada by Ernest Cline, who also wrote Ready Player One, borrows heavily from the plot of this film.

There was a one character I like to know more about. When Alex gets the alien planet and gets out of the car, there is a female alien that guides him.. She the one that says you hear English. She looks so familiar....even with the makeup on. Anyone know if she has done anything else?

It ended with the ability for a hreat sequel, but unfortunately it never happened. I was so disappointed.

They should rewrite and modernize this movie. I.e a squad of five online video players recruited…. Like a live action isekai movie.

I know with today's film technology, a new one could be made. But, with the level of really bad writers we have now. And political messaging hijacking any good story. I do not believe they would do this gem right. Whether it was to remake the same story, or a sequel/Prequel, they would never captured the magic of the original. I know the special effects crew wanted another year in production to get the computer effects to look more realistic. Was still a very new technology. But the studio heads wanted to just push it out the door and move on.
I'm sorry I had to say it - this is way too impersonal and just sound effect. It doesn't incite us to keep watching. Good luck with the channel
