Corrections: Street date for The Fox is April 12, not 9, as stated in the video. And sadly, Mike Lawrence was 37 when he died of cancer, not 32 as I say. Apologies.

Great reviews Anthony! I love the sax-in-the-family history tie-in stories! I’m definitely getting the Harold Land! His Peace-Maker was one of my favorite 2023 reissues. I will now take the important 2nd & 3rd listens to see if the Joe Henderson or Booker Ervin hook me. It’s gotten to the point that acquiring all jazz reissues each month equals a monthly car payment. For a really nice car! 😂 What a wonderful dilemma we are blessed with in these, the golden days of audiophile reissues.

Joe Henderson, a lifetime of listening with that guy. Really looking forward to the Harold Land, I've been trying to find The Fox for a long time.
I read this morning DG is coming out with a Bruckner box set! What's your opinion on that release? Cheers

Three great reviews...shame so many great artists has issues with drugs and just life i general. But during that period, unfortunatly, drinking and using drugs was so common that if you were not other musicians sometimes didnt trust you...strange. For example, Stan Getz, was an addict for a good part of of his life, For years, Stan would take huge amounts of vitamins as he was overly concerned about his heath. Drugs made Stan act irregular to say the least. His friend and fellow (Four Brother from the Herman band) once referred to Stan as a "Nice bunch of Guys"! He would also act somewhat mean spirited. When informed that his good friend Stan Getz had a heart procedure done, Bob Brookmeyer responded "What did they do?..Put one in"?
Ervin and Land were great players. Land's work with the Roach-Brown qunitet is second to none. Land could play both great post bop tenor and funky stuff as well. Ervin was a self taught tenor player spent a lot of time in Europe. He passed away at 39...so young in 1970., a very, very underrated player.
Thanks for doing this Anthony.... people need to know about these 3 great players. I highly recommmend checking out Joe Henerson's 'State of the Tenor, Vol 2" reissued on Blue Note Tone Poet...Ten years from Joe's passing (emphysema--He smoked like a chimney) in 2001, this record might, for me be Joe at his best.---JG

Thanks for the three recommendations, as with you, three sax players I didn’t know , interesting observation: do u think “ playing in the pocket” in Jazz is different from being in time ?

@@AudiophiliaChannel thx Antony for your honesty…. My understanding is …. How To Find The Pocket?
The phrase "in the pocket" is used to describe something or someone playing in such a way that the groove is very solid and has a great feel. When a drummer keeps good time, makes the groove feel really good, and maintains it for an extended period of time while never wavering, it is often referred to as a "deep pocket." It should be noted that it's impossible to have a pocket without also having a groove.
Historically speaking, the term pocket originated in the middle of the previous century, when a strong backbeat (the snare drum striking on beats 2 and 4) became predominant in popular music. When the backbeat is slightly delayed creating a laid-back, or relaxed, feel, the drummer is playing in the pocket.
Today, the term in the pocket has broadened a bit. If, for example, two musicians (usually the bass player and the drummer) are feeling the downbeats together and hitting beat 1 (the downbeat) at the exact same time, they are said to be in the pocket.
Hope thank gives some context :)
