Alex has said his first ever paying gig was sitting in with one of his Pop's jazz bands at age 13. For those of you gushing...
This intro REEKS of old-school big band "big beat" swingin' low tom thumping,.
Alex took it to the "modern" angle of Simmons triggers and doing the work of two floor toms on the double (quadruple?) kick drums.
There are tons of VH songs that swing pretty hard.
Homecheese Greyson here is just bringing the intro back to it's aesthetic roots. No more no less.

Not many people I know dedicate themselves to old-school 1930's-40's big-band-style drumming, so maybe your "us" is the post-modern retro-thing like homecheese here.
And as far as "gatekeeping," not sure what you mean.
The point of my comment is that it's awesome to see neo-retro folks digging the past and connecting it to slightly more "modern" examples of drumming that in themselves are tied to a lineage. I just was commenting on the fact that he's bringing Alex's swing-style full circle to it's roots in Big Band drumming.

Well, considering that this intro is not a walk in the park and I being a drummer since 30+ years
I have to give you credit and a feather in the hat for pulling this off. You sir is very above average.

I'm sure Alex Van Halen listened to "Quadrant 4" by Billy Cobham (1973) and "Space Boogie" by Jeff Beck - with Simon Phillips on the drums (1980). Later on DLR recorded "Shy Boy" (1986) with Gregg Bissonette on drums, all songs with a very similar shuffle groove with double pedal and with sligthly different challenges.

Damn great cover. When VH came to town it was a party. There was a buzz in the air in the weeks prior to the show that I've never seen with other bands. They were so much fun live.

Surprised the cymbal stand on the right stayed upright. Nicely done especially the Bonham style tom work as Alex never played it like that.

The insane part about this is that the first part of the intro on the toms wasn't actually even played by Alex for the record. It was a recording of a motorcycle that triggered a drum machine

Nice playing.. Excuse my ignorance of Van Halen, but i thought that was an intro to a big band tune from the 1930's until the rest of the band came in...He must have been influenced by Krupa & Buddy Rich etc...Really cool...Also i respect the fact that you wore a suit for the occasion!
