Building a Simple Cozy Off Grid Winter Log Cabin (anyone can do this) - ASMR (Start-to-Finish)

- I build a super simple cabin on a very tight budget of just $7 using reclaimed materials and a few fasteners, bolts, threaded rod and a bit of hard work.
The small cabin is build from an a-frame template. It is very similar to a tent, but with solid back and front walls, with the tarp overlapping the frame. The tarp is also reused from bubble buildings such as soccer pitches and baseball diamonds. I really only spent money on the fasteners. A couple threaded rods, bolts, and some nails. I also use quite a few screws to hold down the floor which was reclaimed from palette wood, or skids.
I do not cut any live trees for this project, and am building in a replanted forest that was improperly managed for decades. My goal is to thin out the canopy of dead trees first, then cut out every other row to allow the forest to flourish and increase the tree diversity. Currently, all the trees in this forest are pines, and they don't allow any sunlight to reach the forest floor making it not very hospitable for forest critters.
Join us as we show you how to build a tiny cabin in the woods for a super low cost. All this can be done with a drill and screws, or a hammer and nails, a handsaw, circular saw, or chainsaw. We will also build a table, chair, and full bed!
The cabin sleeps 1 comfortably, but it's possible to get one more. If no stove is necessary, it's super easy to get one more person inside the tent, but there needs to be enough space behind the stove so the plastic doesn't melt.
If you decide to build this shelter, be sure to keep safety in mind and use a smoke detector.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle. - Zábava
*Working on a new project, but it's now quite done yet - hope you enjoy this ASMR version for now.*
Just sweep the floor and it's done!
👍
Loved watching you both❤️ Thank you for another great video!
Best TV ON THE WEB!
I am fully impressed! It’s just a complete czcams.com/users/postUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 plan with the best resources and step by step instructions . These shed plans are so satisfying as if the sheds build themselves on their own. Worthy work Ryan!
I enjoy it better when you both talk the silent ones are not as good. That’s cool though and t/y for showing us this build. I just enjoy hearing you and Don talking
Same here, I don't enjoy ASMR videos that much. I think half the fun is the explanations of what and why they are doing and the jokes.
Me to it’s fun to listen and watch
We all just appreciate the content this man and his crew makes its just a masterpiece imagine what's he's gonna doing the future 💛...
To my Canadian brothers to the north…….you’ve done it once again, another great build! I totally enjoy your channel.
Always watching because I know I won’t be disappointed about what creation you decide to or what ever adventure you decide to take us on it is going to be amazing. From getting a chicken house, or getting pigs and making a pig pen to building cabins in the woods, it’s going to be beautiful and amazing! So just keep us guessing and keep the surprises coming!
ASMR isn’t for you brother! You and your crew are hilarious and we sit every week and laugh our asses off watching your content! I’ll watch anything you put up but we love the comedy that comes with your builds/projects! Thanks for all you do and keep up the great content! 🇺🇸💪🏼🇨🇦
Thanks Joe! Don't worry these re-cuts are just recaps to go to a larger audience. I'm working on a project right now...
I'm amazed by the mileage you've gotten out of that salt tarp! Recycling at it's finest!
I liked the ASMR....but your sense of humor cracks me up!
O other nice job you guys ,have a good day 😻👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Spring has sprung and there's work to be done. How about doing one of Don's projects.
Pretty great way to use up all the dead and fallen trees and throw away tarp material!
Great video but I love the talking. You have the best sense of humor. Good clean fun and comraderie.
Your going to be able to start your own little community with all these builds you've done.
If anyone had access to a standing dead forest, a 20 foot piece of all thread, and a handy helper like Don, yes, anyone could do that...lol That cabin looks comfy, have you ever been to Missouri? 😆 😂 Love what ya'll are doing ❤️
I live in Missouri!
@@jerryrogers9703 I live in Florida, but I'm putting an off grid cabin in by Winona
Hi from Syracuse NY USA everyone thank you for sharing your adventures with me
Cozy. Don is pretty useful to have around :)
Hello from Minnesota USA!
HI!
Cordless angle grinder, hmm, handy. Will add it to my list.
Solid nut and bold frame construction...take care.
Great video glad you posted keep them coming thanks
The sun through the trees at 4:35 is just beautiful. I really enjoyed this build.
Quiet fun!!!
I missed your commentary in this one. Surprised the chimney didn't burn that plastic. Love your videos.
That looks like triple wall pipe it stays cool on the outside!
I loved this build but I missed you. I enjoy your chatter, you make me laugh. Hope next video you narrate more. ❤
Thank you for doing a little thinning in that biological desert. A lot more of those trees need to come down.
I agree.
Considering the exorbitant cost of fuel in Canada, that cabin is worth a small fortune. Thanks for sharing this video Kevin. Wishing you, Don and your families a blessed week. Greetings from the lower 48. Peace brother
The ASMR was amazing! I hope the cabin went up as easily as you made it appear.
Thanks for saying anyone could do this.
Don is such a great friend - especially since he's there because he wants to be.
You're helping him be relevant as he gets older. He obviously loves working outside, with his hands, and the challenge of it all!
Thanks again!
Good video man
Best ever!
when im older i wanna buy tons of land and build things like this on it for people in need to live in. it could be like a little cozy village or something.
I really love winter content! rewatching the whole process was a blast
Great info. Thanks
That came out really nice great job, be safe and have fun
Absolutely awesome 😎
Your creativity is amazing. Every person needs a Don in their life, it is great that you can document all of your time together.
It's 94 degrees today (May 22) in Massachusetts. That snow looks mighty good right now.
Seems like you keep pulling fire places out of nowhere,. Awesome.
Great build!
I am just so happy to see Howell this turned out looks cozy and comfy great job
I liked that 😁👍
Love the content my favorite build is the pallet wrap that, build can be used for a green house as well, but why so quiet lol,i had to make sure this was the rite! channel
Great video Kev! I love these ASMR ones you make
Well done.
Nice job on the ASMR build. It is fun to do something different. I may try it on my channel.
Don's a beast 💪
Great show thank you guys keep them coming
Those wood cracks 😊
Cool 😎
Damn right fellas
much prefer the videos where you talk through things
thanks
Great content. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family and friends. ❤️ 😄
Let build a village with Kevin and Don now without words. Full Stop!
Kevin and Don - putting urban dwellers to shame, one video at a time!
Have watched this before and fun to watch. Anyone can do this?...doubtful!
My Favorite part is when you guys are sitting outside staring at the fire 🔥 (no talking) just blank starring like... ok now what?? 🤷♂️🤷♂️
(18:02)
I've tried and tried but I just don't like ASMR. Still watched it farther than any other ASMR video.
Once you go white you never go back ? I finally got a white tarp and now that I used it I will never go back to green, blue,or drown everything is so bright und the whit tarp .👍
I always hear how forrests are maintained by cutting down some of the planted trees. We have saved grounds to be repurposed as landfills 20 years ago. By planting trees row by row. I don’t know yet what kind of trees they are. But I would love your support if we ever come to know and start a campaign to let the youth learn how to build cabins and survival shelters in these ones. Is there a theory behind the madness something that js researched?
"Anyone can do this" Me, living in a city without tree's and having virtually no tools. - "okay"
When are you going to make a dance/disco studio for your wife and daughter? ❤️🤪
Hey. Is Don still single? He's impressing me with those pipes. ( Just had to ) Another one knocked out of the park...
Your cutting my all your trees down
What is keeping the HOT Stovepipe from setting the Plastic Roof on Fire?? All I saw was a Hole cut through the Plastic and the Stovepipe pushed through it, then you made a Fire in the Stove. Did I Miss Something??
You’ve built an entire village on your land. Will you ever open it up to the public, as in an Air B&B ?
👍👍👍
Is that really may 21/22? You seem to be a bit cooler than we are in Montreal today.
I love the build. But personally would never use a white tarp. Because it offers no camouflage. I would instead use green or brown
Are those McNuts? 🤣 And why an in-swing door? For the bears or for less space?
can you list what kind of fastener you used - you're cutting them down to size?
It's threaded rod.
@@ModernSelfReliance thanks Kevin - I binge watched ur vids yesterday so I noticed you explaining that in the other vid. I made a primitive double wattle and daub hut using local hay (scythe cut) and willow logs - gable roof (or whatever it's called) - I took some photos. It was designed on an 1800 BCE archaeological dig from Germany. Turns out the insulation value was not matched again till 1990s insulation standards!! Only my walls don't really attach and one's leaning - so... hahahahah. It's 10 x 12 and so no permit. I got composting toilets - my 2nd one is on the way - from "Toilets for People" - an engineer who works in "Developing" countries also on toilets.
I'm fascinated, like yourself, by the housing crisis and permits, etc. for micro-units (I didn't even know that term till a couple days ago!). I used to live in SROs in Twin Cities, Minnesota - they are very hard to find these days. Single Room Occupancy. Technically a "rooming unit" instead of a "dwelling unit" and so a campsite is a "camping unit" as a "dwelling site" instead of a permanent dwelling unit. Of course it is illegal for people to live off their own land now - as native indigenous peoples did, our ancestors, for 225,000 years. hahahahaha.
So... to own a vehicle you need a "permanent address" with "facilities" as per the International Building Code and without a vehicle it's difficult to have a job, etc. Of course vehicles are destroying life on Earth via Co2 emissions being 100 times greater than the background rate of 12 gigatons per 200 years. Hilarious that all these high tech builders are not keen on our situation of imminent "biological annihilation" as googlescholar calls it.
Well thanks for your response. First structure I threw up was a tipi and it's still standing after 7 years - last I checked - we had a tornado nearby recently with flooding so who knows? But I didn't "strip off the bark" - kind of doubt traditional tipis have the bark stripped off. It's willow so if anything I would want it to grow back? hahahah. I call it the "insane clown" tipi named after Drumpf of course. Yeah I have just enough room to stand up and lie down in the hypotenuse of the clay base - I put in clay mud walls with straw bales for insulation - and a French drain tube just outside the runoff to prevent flooding. The squirrels lived there until the Lynx ate the squirrel family - now just one squirrel survives. The pine marten got eaten also. The lynx got scared away from the neighbor to the south being a real carpenter building his property for permanent dwelling unit. hahahaha.
thanks
👍
Great build! Were did you get the plastic? What mil is it?
It's from those inflatable dome buildings. It's crazy thick.
Yep, that wood heater that you used wasn't suitable for much cooking, but you use what you csn scrounge I guess.
where did Don sleep? It looks like a one person cabin.
Interesting project, a little weird no one speaking.
HA HA HA!!!! I CANT BELIEVE YOU GUYS DID ALL THIS WORK WITHOUT SPEAKING!! IT must of drove you nuts while you were working. I was laughing right from the first. I hope the Girls didn't silence you for some crazy reason!!! HA HA HA!!!
Hey neighbor, are you guys ok? The storm that hit us was nothing like the derecho that headed your way and I heard five people died 🥺. I hope you're family and friends are all safe and that your structures were undamaged.
✌💜🐖💨
I'm still without power from yesterday at noon... Fortunately I have systems in place... We are weathering the aftermath well. All structures are safe..
I'm glad to hear you have systems in place and that no structures were damaged. I hope you all stay safe or heal fast if anyone was injured. Drop a line if you need anything and hug those beautiful girls of yours! ✌💜🐖💨
The no speaking in the video is interesting, the sounds of the construction are neat, and way better than a wigger rap or ghetto rodent rap blasting in the video. How much did the fireplace warm up the tarp cabin?
T-shirt weather inside the cabin.
@@cmosphoto1 I would think so, but the structure doesn't look like it would retain heat in cold weather, but would be real decent in warm and hot weather.
What size is that tarp?
25' by 20'
"Anyone can do this!"
> gigantic drill
> 4 foot drillbit
sir.
Hi! Is there some law which forbade such deforestation?
These trees are already dead. He must cut them down or there will be a fire that will kill the living ones. He is helping his forest.
I’m a bit late, but he’s helping this forest by thinning out all those dead and dying trees. He mentions in at least one previous video that this forest was not managed properly by whoever previously owned the land. This forest is a monoculture where the trees are planted too close together on purpose. They are meant to be thinned out after a time.
“Anyone can do this.” But not without Don’s help!
Not into the ASMR stuff
Stopped watching your brother's channel for the same reason
I like your witty banter way better Kev
🌀💚🌀
A lot of our forest has been burned up in New Mexico. Everywhere we got firewood is burned and the National Forest is closed
Poor management or super dry weather?
@@ModernSelfReliance super dry weather. Unfortunately, those who use the forest or go by one don't care.
Kevin I love your videos but the silence I hope it’s not a new thing
Thanks for sharing
Valheim
막 베어 제끼는구나?
Cat got your tongue?
You know, you should invest in a wood chipper instead of burning all of that. You'd have mulch for years.
Hahaha good video. Silent is ok...but...how can anyone do stuff without grunts or stuff like when you hit the wrong nail...😬or drop it...🤪still it was great entertainment
First
Great video as usual but I am not a fan of ASMR!
Love your channel but ahhhhhh man don’t start doing the ASMR stuff like your bro.
hmm i wonder what amenities this cabin will have! maybe a bed? a chair? a table? a woodstove? that sounds about right. let me know when you really step it up and build a diy bushcraft zach fowler grade religious indoctrination chamber.
also, don needs a pen.
You guys need to talk more in your video.
Must be hard to always keep up with your brother "a"? Joke...Look forward to your content as it does not suc* Thanks and Great health to all.
I was hoping that you wouldn't go down the same road as Chris doing the asmr videos as that had me not watching anymore as I love your way of interacting with the viewer and humor ect please don't make this a weekly thing but it's your channel I respect that and it would take moor than a few video's that I wasn't keen to watch to stop watching your stuff as it's to good and ingageing thanks
