Quick trick if you're at sea with alt scale geography. If you know your whole tone scales (all two of them, just depends where you start) all you have to do to get the alt is split the 9th (2nd) in half - lower and raise it. You can also see the alt scale as the bottom part of the half-whole scale and the top part of the whole tone scale. The root, b9, #9, 3 and #11 are in the half-whole and the 3, #11, b13 b7 and root are in the whole tone. 3 and #11 are in both (as well as root, obviously).
I have honestly never thought of that before. I'm going to have to give it a try to see if I can find some ideas that take advantage of those alternates.

These half/whole are also slide position patterns G7(b9), 4-3,5-4,5-4,5-4,4-3.
