  • This volume is part of the Columbus College of Art & Design's Packard Library collection. The volume is entitled Reflections on the revolution in France, and on the proceedings in certain societies in London relative to that event, written by Edmund Burke (1729-1797). This volume has a hidden fore edge painting, which shows Edmund Burke and his estate at Beaconsfield. It is a first edition and features a full leather binding with elaborate decoration on the covers, spine and interior boards. It also has sewn double end bands.
This volume and another from CCAD were brought to the Preservation Lab for 3rd party treatment. CCAD was awarded an Ohio LSTA Conservation Grant from the State Library of Ohio for this treatment. Part of the treatment & housing plan included creating a video to document the hidden fore edge painting, allowing curators to share the fore edge painting without having to manipulate the volume once treated.
    Video:
Conservator Ashleigh Ferguson Schieszer is carefully handling the volume to expose the fore edge painting while wearing nitrile gloves to protect the volume.
Video was shot and edited by conservation technician and photographic documentation specialist Jessica Ebert using a Sony 4K HandyCam.
