  • "Way Down" is a song recorded by Elvis Presley. Recorded in October 1976, it was the last single released before his death on August 16, 1977. The song was written by Layng Martine, Jr. and was later covered by Status Quo and Cliffhanger. Released as a single (with "Pledging My Love" on the B-side) on June 6, 1977, it was his current single when he died. It was racing up the top 40 when news of his death broke. Shortly after his death, it became the 33rd Number 1 of his career. It reached #1 on both the American Country and British Pop charts just days after his death, and almost six years after his previous Number 1 single. It was reissued in April 2005 and reached #2 on the UK singles chart.

Elvis loved showing off his friend , J.D. Sumner , His Bass singer and life long friend . NO ONE knew Elvis Presley then a hand full of singers called '' The Blackwood Brothers Quartet ''. Gladys Love Presley took Elvis to great concerts at the Ellis Auditorium , Just a few blocks from their home .That's were he met J.D. Sumner , James Blackwood , Jake Hess , Hovie Lister , Jim '' Big Chief '' Wetherington and others in Gospel Music . '' Thats were it all started ''

How In The World Did This Not Ever Make a #1 hit for him? Can anyone answer that? He should have had 25-30 more #1 hits. RIAA found away to change their own rules over the years & even ripped away 12 of his original #1's, go figure?

40 years ago Elvis passed away. "Way Down" was climbing the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was the last hit single for Elvis while still alive. After that were two posthumous hits, "My Way" (late '77) and the remix of "Guitar Man" ('81). He will always be remembered as the King of Rock and Roll. And I will always devote an entire day to viewing videos of Elvis 45s on both January 8 (his date of birth) and August 16 (the day he passed away).
