- If your dog has blood in their stool then you need to know what the causes of bloody diarrhea are. The most common cause of a dog pooping blood is colitis with blood, mucus or jelly being present. This will often not need any treatment from your vet. Knowing how to treat a dog with colitis and when to take them to your vet is very important.
Some of the causes though are more serious and getting your dog checked over straight away could make all the difference in their recovery.

The main cause of diarrhea with blood or blood in stool in dogs:
- Simple colitis most common + the poop will often also contain mucus or jelly
- Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis
- Infection such as parvovirus
- Severe parasite burden
- Intestinal foreign body
- Tumors of the colon
- Ruptured anal gland abscesses can appear as blood on stool
If your dog is otherwise well, eating + drinking, has no vomiting, is bright and active then a bland diet + monitor is likely sufficient.
If they are unwell in themselves in any way or there is lots of blood in the stool then it's always best to get checked out by your veterinarian.

Great video Dr Alex! Another less common but very serious cause is also anticoagulant rat poison that can present as blood in the stool in severe cases, which will require immediate veterinary attention. :)

I found out my dog has a case of colitis ): it's exctly as you described it, it started last night with him wanting to get off the bed at night to seemingly pee multiple times, but I think it was just a result of him being inflamed and not knowing where the pressure or uncomfortableness was comig from

My dog just started to get diarrhea yesterday. We've been feeding him wet food for about a week akin to his normal hard food because he had surgery to remove his right eye, everything was going good until yesterday he had diarrhea at 3am, I cleaned it up and had him go outside and later in the evening he crapped on the floor in the living room, and now it's 4am and he did it again but this time he had an alarming strak of blood in it. I think its the wet food but if anyone can give me an answer I'd be greatful
My 4 month old puppy has normal brown stool with a hint of dark brown almost black. He’s very active, eats well (more than well) and overall is normal and doesn’t look like he’s sick.
I had a mixrure of a poodle and maltese dog, he got sick and died within 4 days. He was very healthy until one day he started vomiting. After that he just went on to play with my little sisters. Second day he had low energy and i noticed he wasn't jumping up in excitement when he sees me so i deduced he was sick so i took him to the vet, they were closed at midday. So that day after i brought him back, he actually was playing with my other dogs....running around and being all beautiful until that night he just kept on vomiting and pooping blood. My heart was broken, all i could do was hope for morning to come early so i take him to the vet as soon as possible. After i got there i was told it's because of ticks so they gave him a tick shot and that was it. When i got home few hours later he continued pooping blood and just like that he stopped breathing. It hurt so bad i buried him immediately because i wanted to do it whilst i was still in shock to take advantage of my numbness at that moment. (Don't know if it makes sense) it's been a week today and i feel like my crush ive loved for 10 years broke up with me. My country isn't a dog lover so i can't talk about my pain. But I can't describe what I'm feeling. I need to know what happened to my boy because i want to get another of the same litter of my boy. I shared my own personal towel with him. He used to lick my ears when we were cuddling in bed. It's just too much pain

Happened to me...I just adopted my boy 1 month ago he's 2 months old he was so active and energetic until he started to sleep and stopped eating food taught may be he having a stomach upset and taught it's going to be alright... I was busy since my semester exams just started....he pooped blood and look so tired...I told my dad about it he said let's visit vet tomorrow I taught everything going to be alright...I put him in basket and wrapped him around by towel and went out side for a work when I came back and pat him he had no reactions ...I lifted him and realised he left me my hands started to shake I kept crying all the day...I blamed my self for not took care of him.... I really missed him a lot ... He doesn't deserve this pain full death...my poor boy
Mine started out with pancreatitis and it developed into Autoimmune hemolytic anemia, very low chance of surviving transfusions so I had to put her to sleep. There are some causes that are harmless and some very critical sadly.

But before, I gave her a bland diet and a lot of pumpkin and it worked. But 2 days ago she began to vomit and had diarrhea w mucus and little blood. The new vet said to give her a bland diet and if it gets worse I’m taking her to the er.

My puppy that was 5 months was extremely healthy and suddenly he stopped eating and became sedentary. For 3 days he hardly ate anything and during work my wife called me that he just pooped blood and died. This is exactly what our dog is doing right now, she is super healthy but at first he was drooling and vomiting saliva and she is not eating, wehenever he drinks water she just vomits saliva but she pooped normal last night but she didnt eat anything until today which is 6:16 pm and she pooped blood 🥺🥺😫😫😭😭😭😭 it smells awful like a fish, I dont know how much longer she will survive 😭😭 the problem is that we don't have enough money for vet and that's the saddest part.

@@midasutatchi9753 luckily yes T-T his sister is sick now too, and our fisrt dog when she as just a puppy she did this too, I think it's normal(not sure) but I think it's different when dogs actually got sick and don't eat for days. Talk to your vet. Regular vomiting is not normal. It may be diet related, especially if he’s active and growing well but better safe than sorry

I left my two dogs at my work because I went to the beach. And when I came back they acted normal and it's only been two days. I have been noticing that he was having trouble pooping. He would poop somewhere and he would try to poop again and he would strain to poop again. Today he finally I think got what he was straining to gt out get come out and it was a small little poop and it was kinda dark black and he had a drop of blood come out after that's been the only sign of blood so far and the rest of his poops are a no normal color. Thank you for the very informative video! I’m asking this question because my vet is very unhelpful and they rushed me out of the appointment yesterday while I was trying to ask questions and I was asking for more tests , but they told me I was being a worry wort . My dog has been popping the raspberry jelly looking poop indicative of HGE or parvo . I took her to the vet thinking it was a ruptured anal gland and they said her glands are empty. The poop smelled very fishy like anal gland . I didn’t actually witness her pooping the raspberry jam looking poop until I got home from the vet . They told me to give her the metronidazole and Biomox with food and told me to feed her boiled chicken and rice while she recovers . I think what she has is HGE . Is the rice good or bad for her right now ? I get conflicting info online and the vet office is so vague. They don’t say what chicken to rice ratio , or how much pumpkin to add . I think she’s been pooping this bloody jelly for close to a week because I’ve been seeing red stains on her new bed for that long . I honestly thought that she or our other dog had dragged our peanut M&M’s onto their beds because they start shaking the bags when they want a treat . Then they scatter onto the floor and one of them had dragged them into the beds . The way I even found the connection between the stains is that I thought I’d dropped strawberry jam onto the floor Sunday evening. When I wiped it up , I smelled a foul odor . I’m worried about my dog and want to make sure I give her the best care possible. She seems to be straining to poop , then just a small blob of red jelly comes out . I’ve not see her poop at all today. She’s a 12 year old mini chi weenie. Is parvo possible at her age ? She stays vaccinated for everything. I don’t think she was the one licking the M&M’s . May dogs share the beds . She’s never shown interest ins sweets . But she does lick cloth surfaces and licks our dirty floors a lot . Her new bed is very fuzzy and it makes me wonder if some fibers got caught in her gut . I’ll be washing the beds again and then the covers inside out just in case . She is acting her normal self . The only time she didn’t act her usual self is after the vet visit. She strained and pooped the jelly 3 times in 30 minutes. The globs that came out were the size of 2-3 quarters laid next to each other . She usually poops away from us as she has her own dog lot with a doggie door . Had she not pooped the jelly on the puppy pad yesterday in front of me , I’d never have known for sure if it was anal gland or poop . I don’t trust my vets . I plan to find a new one . But there are months long waits to get into new ones in my area . Sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to be thorough with my info so you could tell me if the rice and pumpkin are a good idea. If so , what ratio of rice to chicken? And how much pumpkin, in teaspoons , should I give a 5.6 pound dog . Thank you again!

My dog went in for a dental almost 2 months ago, and I don’t know if it’s because of the anabiotic‘s that she was on but her intestinal track has not been the same sense. Her stool was mushy and she was pooping a lot. Eventually I could see that there was some blood in her stool and we gave her probiotics. It didn’t seem to be helping so I pulled back thinking it was making her worse. And now we just came back from the park where I saw her literally pooping a stream of blood. I am going to take her to the doctor tomorrow but I’m really worried that this all started from when they did the dental.
Also, normally when we are at the park she poops a lot anyway so towards the end of the walk when she pooped out the blood I think it was just her trying to mark. If that makes sense. So she was squeezing it out. I may not have normally come out like it did, except that she was pushing to leave one less mark. And she already pooped four times on the walk.

@@Lopkkpa They said she had colitis. And put her on a reduced fat diet. Try scaling back the diet to a very simple bland diet. Like boiled chicken and canned pumpkin. Canned pumpkin, from what I was reading is better than white rice because it doesn’t shoot up the blood sugar like white rice can. They also gave her a medication to help reduce the inflammation. I can’t recall the name of it right now. But giving her the plain diet and the medication turned it around. The main thing is to not give your dog fatty foods. Especially if they’re small because it affects them more quickly. And creates sludge in their gallbladder. And then their food is more difficult to digest and causes inflammation and on and on and on. If you can’t afford to take your dog to the vet, remove the kibble, and give boiled chicken breast and canned pumpkin instead. But I really feel you should take your dog to the doctor.
@@Lopkkpa Do not give your dog bologna, bacon, cheese, foods with butter or oil on them etc. all that fat can be really hard on a small animal.
Try the bland diet that I mentioned above for a good week or two. And then slowly introduce a healthy kibble back in to the diet. But I would keep adding the pumpkin. I’ve been giving it to my dog ever since ( with a little water stirred in because they said she was also dehydrated) and she still loves the pumpkin.

Hello, my dog started to vomit and I took her to the vet. The vet returned my dog after some tests and prescribed some antibiotics. They also said my dog started bleeding (colitis). She didnt have that before the vet (the bleeding). It's been over a week and she has not stopped the diarrhea. What should I do? How can I stop her diarrhea.

I’m sorry you have probably answered this already but my dog is straining to poop and when he does it’s in small amounts with a few drops of blood with it each time . It’s all been happening in less then a hour or two and he’s otherwise fine . Eating and drinking fine and very active . Should I see a vet or wait ? with simple colitis it is normal to strain and not produce much. If there are no other problems at all then it's probably OK to wait a few days and just try adding a bit more fibre to the diet. The video discusses this all in more detail. I hope it resolves soon

my mom showered our Chihuahua 1 week after her giving birth and seems she started to leave blood stains once in a while from her private part and when she pees she leaves some blood but it's not too much. it's been 2 weeks and shes 3weeks in labour and we think it may be discharge but was wondering if it's normal due to labour or was it from showering her? O and it doesn't have a gel substance but more of just regular blood
It's not going to be anything to do with showering, and as long as there is no smell and your dog is well then it is likely a normal discharge. I should soon clear up and if not, or there is a smell, or your dog is unwell, you should get her checked over
My puppy has bleeding after he poops. His poop is a little soft but has the normal form. He’s eating and drinking like normal as well. I’m not sure what to do

I don't. They are not very common, about 1% of all tumors in dogs and typically affecting long nosed dogs who live in urban environments

Not sure if you are still having problems with your dog but mine had one, half of her nose turned a different light pink color almost white they said they would need half of her nose to he removed. I gave her something called Chaga. Google it. It actually removes tumors I added it to her water and her nose color came back.
Hi my dog has been having a lot of blood in his stool I did go to the vet yesterday and he said it and gut inflammation and put some fluids on his back and a shot for the nausea I just gave him his metronidazole tab but he is still pooping blood all day today, I’m having so much trouble for him to take the meds but got him to take the first one, he won’t eat or drink any thing either should I take him again to the vet tomorrow?

My dog is very active he eat normal and drink water but my problem is her stool has blood and sometimes only water and blood, and he poop like 6 times a day. I sincerely hoping for your response.
I hope this gives you some ideas of what could be going on. If it has just come on then you could wait to see if it goes away but if it has been like this for a while then you should schedule a visit with your vet
Me and my family left town and left my dog at a boarding kennel and we came back and now she’s sick she threw up once and I woke up at 4am and she pooped on the floor and it had this bloody gel stuff in and separate from it
that blood gel is a sign of colitis and can be stress related (like going into kennels). Vomiting isn't normal though so if it continues, or your dog is unwell, then getting them checked over will be a good idea

Hi I wanna ask if 5in1 vaccine on dogs can be one of the causes of having bloody diarrhea?
Because my dog got his 5in1 vaccine about five days ago, and after 4 days seems to normal nothing changes happened still active and eats his meals as always, and then in the fifth day around 2 in the afternoon after i gave his food for lunch at 1:30 pm he started his diarrhea and then the next of his poop got a small amount of blood.
We have blood in the poop ever 2 weeks. We check the stool he had cryptosporidium we gave tablets after thet we check again the stool he was clean. We have ok for 2-3 months, after thet he poop again blood with mucouse and it was to stinky i try with diet with rise and chicken and probiotics, i think i dont have energy enough with this and im scared for my dog(maltese male). I have a female Frenchie that has had explosive diarrhea with blood. I have gotten her when she was 4 months old and had always had the same issue. Took her to the vet and they did a test on her colon and gave her medicine for it but it never went away. She is very skinny. I really doubt that she had parasites 🦠 or worms I really think she has IBD. She eats twice a day and she is very playful. I have her now on prescribed gastrointestinal royal canine dry food mixed with gastrointestinal wet can food. It went from watery diarrhea to a little more thick but still diarrhea. Any advice would be greatly appreciated since I am desperate to find a solution to this so she can look and be healthy.
I'd suggest talking to your vet about metronidazole and prednisone if diet alone has not helped. They will know her full history and so understand if those would be the most appropriate next step

Google image search all of the plants in your backyard and make sure none of them are poisonous for puppy my cousin lost two full-grown Great Danes because they found a plant in his yard that was poisonous and they died within a few hours and the death was very traumatic I'm not going to list all the details that the dogs went through but get rid of the poisonous plants is my suggestion check them all out have a great day
Could this occur from a dog holding in poop from lack of taking the dog outdoors to deficate, my moms 12 year old won't release her poop unless she is confortable they moved 3 months ago and now I see the dog has many issues with her digestive track,
I would say holding on for long periods of time is more likely to result in constipation than collitis. If the stools are very hard then they could cause minor damage when passed but you would only see a very small amount of blood on the surface and the stools themselves would be very hard. Stress can cause collitis too so could that be what is going on? If you are seeing problems in an older dog especially that aren't improving then getting them checked over is a good idea

It sounds like specialist intervention may be needed, or more sampling that might even include a biopsy

I took out my 2 month old and half puppy outside so that he could do his “business” outside and when he went to poop he had diahrreah with a little bit of blood. I would suggest you to give yellow yolk with turmeric powder mixed along with sugar beat them up and make your dog have them 2 times a day.....your dog will be active and will survive

@@areyousober4332 what I did was that I bought the food they were used to and gave it to them for a week straight and it went back to normal. Then slowly started to change the food to the one I gave him before and after another week I was giving him only the new food and he was fine. You just have to slowly get the food into their system so it doesn’t impact them in a bad way : )

My dog got into my garbage and ate spicy chilli she did this a year ago also with a slickly chicken sandwich , next day she was having diarrhea and vomiting just like the first time it happened I gave it a few days to see if it would stop The vomiting did but the diarrhoea jelly like pop hasn’t she’s on 2 meds every 8 and 12 hours this is the thrid day she’s still having the bloody diarrhea jelly jam poops what do I do she didn’t eat today or drink water and only started with the poops later this evening I want to keep her hydrated so I gave her water with a syringe but she won’t eat the vet also gave her fluids when she was there .

I hope I get a reply. My dog was diagnosed with a form of pancreatitis. She is only a year old and has suffered lots of diarrhea and vomiting. I've tried to treat it but it comes and goes. But for the first time today the stool was diarrhea with blood. I'm losing hope....

talk to your vet as they know what has been tried. With long term pancreatitis problems a low fat diet is really important

If he's unwell you should get him checked over. Puppies can get very sick very quickly so it's always better to be safe than sorry. I'd recommend giving your vet a call

@@hisle9188 we gave our dog iron. if ur dog won't take it, try using a syringe, take off the needle and insert the iron in your dog's mouth. also, give your dog lots of sugar water

@@beepoop-9400 Ask a drugstore for liquid iron (ferrous sulfate). Insert it to your dog's mouth thru a syringe (remove the needle). Sugar water do help by replenishing your dog's lost fluids. Hope your dog will get betterrrr

Has he had bloods/tests, or do you know what is the likely diagnosis? Starving a puppy for 5 days isn't normally something that's recommended, at least not without support in the hospital. I'd be having a good talk with your vet about your pups condition and what the future looks like based on the current plan, and what you should be watching for that might mean a different plan is needed
@@OurPetsHealth mine died today after getting continuous treatment for 1 week....they had been giving many injections... they said something like his kidneys failed coz his stomach looks bulging moments he died.....i blame the vet clinic...i think they didn't properly diagnose the disease and gave continuous injections that results to kidney failure...i am going to miss him

Have you got a diagnosis? It sounds a lot like he has parvovirus which I’m afraid to say is very often deadly despite intensive treatment. Some pups will survive and then be fine. Talk to your vet

Hope the visit went well. Great to do given he vomited as well. Swiss cheese is not a poison but could cause an upset or inflammation of the pancreas in some dogs

It sounds like your dog is really sick and needs rehydration and a prolonged period on IV fluids with supporting care like medication to step the nausea. I hope the outcome is successful but advanced kidney disease does not always respond to treatment depending on the underlying cause and how bad things already are

I would suggest to give the dogs or puppies an egg yolk mixed with turmeric nd sugar for 2 times a day .....Feed them with curd for next few days on their diet ..follow this for 5 days your dog will get cured very soon ......my personal experience. Try this and let me know whether this worked out for your puppy's or dogs

if he's really unwell then calling the emergency vet would be a very good idea. Otherwise get him in to be seen in the morning and try and get him to drink a little in the meantime. I hope he's better soon
