Klaus really wanted to so badly to show and tell Hayley that he loved her more than anything but his pride, his inner demons, and self caution got in the way of everything. He knew if he allowed his self to even show or tell Hayley that he cared or loved her. He wouldn’t be able to stop loving her. That’s why he also said to her “She would taunt me to get to you” or “they knew that those who care for her would suffer” He knew that a lot of stuff would get in there way of him loving Hayley. So it was best for them to be “just parents to Hope” He also thought that it was best that way and for Hayley to be with Elijah “because she would be safer that way” when in reality she was most safer with him.
