Thanks for watching. This trimmer was free on Craigslist and the problem is that I don't know if it start. The fix was simple but I went the simple route on it this time.
Your channel is seriously underrated. You should have your own TV show by now. Really good stuff on here. Btw I’ve been able to fix all the small engines I own because of you!!
Thanks for the compliment I really appreciate it.
In the past I have always rebuilt the carbs but now the new ones cost about the same as a rebuild kit. So now I would buy new carb as it saves time and reduces human error. Thanks for the video especially about the bubbles going back to the tank.
No problem. I would just replace the carb as well but the videos would be really really short
Hi: I usually try to fix the factory carb first. One time then if it fails, time for a new one. Usually only takes 15 minutes or so to fix it unless it needs the ultra sonic cleaner. Thanks what a great find.
My thoughts exactly
Thanks for the explanation and the help.
Those types of carburetor are known as "rotary carburetors". They are said to be a high quality of carburetor which is why you find them on higher end machines/models. I always given them a good blast in the ultrasonic cleaner. (Often 3 or 4 30min cycles).
All of these little 2-cycle cube carbs are PITA due to the near microscopic channels and orifices housed in the body of the carb.
The reason why the machine sounds weird is because there is no implement attached so the motor is not ruining under load.
When tuning the carburetor always make sure the trimmer head has the line extended as far as it will go before getting trimmed by the guard. This will put a load on the motor in order to tune it correctly.
Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
It all comes down to the customer, I always check with them to see if they are ok with me replacing parts.
that's a very good choice.
Hmmm,I could go either way on this one. You can get a cheap new carb for the price of a rebuild kit. But I would disassemble the carb to see what it looks like anyway, if its a bit dirty I probably would give it a good cleaning and see what happens. Great vid!
good point. Thank you Massimo Terenzi
Consider yourself fortunate that a Chinese knock-off carburetor worked. I've never been that lucky.
Yes I do got lucky this time.
ive used these whips commercially for over 5 years. i love them.
yes ive had to completely tear them down and re build a couple times, but for the price? you just cant beat these great tools.
thanks for the video!
thank you
Cut my first pro yard in 83. This little Ryobi earns my respect. My custom version is really good, and when it finally dies the parts will just go on the next one. I do like this little sucker...
thank you for sharing that
Nice video! I’ve had that exact same Ryobi 25cc powerhead/trimmer for about 4 years right now, never had any carb or engine problems with this. Best Ryobi ever made!
nice to know. I wish I could have gotten this in a better condition to get a real feel of its durability.
There is one dislike I don’t like about this trimmer is the way the engine sounds at idle, does sound a little weird.
@@wikeddf yes I have to agree with you. It doesn't sound good, its just a noise and that's it.
I agree! Been a beast for 7 years now. Replaced carb twice only because I broke that paper like gasket that is attached and only way to fix wad get a carb. 2nd kit was like $20.
Great Work mate.
I found that doing 1 fuel hose at a time was the best way to not get them mixed up.
Good tip!
I have alway6s struggled with these carbs too. I am glad I am not the only one!
I'm sure there are lots of people out there who feel the same way.
you are a domain expert on these small engines! The truth about getting carb kits is 50-50. That is, trying to get OEM parts that are same in material quality and correct fit parts may difficult based on my research. Go for a new carb.
You are absolutely right about the carbs. A new oem carb is the best choice
COuldn't start my Ryobi trimmer and last thing I checked was the 2 stroke Oil..... 50 to 1 mix...... how delighted was I just a bit of oil and working again!!!! ps.... I did half of your checks first - very useful
nice, glad it worked out for you
Man I wish you lived close to me, we think alike. LOl Good video .
I agree $15 for new carb, extra primer bulb, and fuel line is a good deal and you got a sparkplug as well. I would go that route too
I find this route is the most cost effective as well. Thank you Anime Red.
I replace carburetors as well cuz I don't have the time to rebuild and the one you have sounds like it needs a carb adjustment with the new carb.. for very low amount of money you can buy carb adjusting tools especially made for those types of carbs..
you're absolutely right. I'll make adjustments when I get some grass to trim. Thanks for the comment
That trimmer has been in the sun for to long from the fading of front plastic
I think you're right. I was wondering why it was so pale.
a heat gun would bring most of that plastic back to a nice shine again
@@animered1986 that's worth a shot. Thanks
I have this exact engine and I only used it once. I changed to a 40v expand it engine and just put this gas one up. I might give it another go because of this video.
let me know what happens.
Most of the time, the fuel lines are clogged or flooded. Mine has both. I thank you on this how to video. Also the fuel filters are likely corroded as well.
No problem. Yes there's a good chance if it.
Just drill a small hole into the exhaust, that’s what I do with all my equipment. It’ll also increase power and RPMs because it lets your engine breathe better
not a bad idea.
Like into the muffler or take off the muffler and drill into the screen?
@@426moparhemi he means into the muffler itself and not necessarily the screen area.
@@426moparhemi Into the muffler itself
I would simply replace the carburator as it's often a better idea than a rebuild since they are very easy to get etc now days
Time is money. Thank you Patrick Stapleton
@@HomeGaragechannel yep but spent wisely of course
I see a new machine almost every video
no unfortunately some of them do come back.
True
When cleaning or replacing a carburetor, I would go ahead and clean the air filter if needed. Also, check spark plug for carbon and clean as needed. Replace if needed. Check spark gap and adjust if needed.
Thanks for the tips!
Great video, gave me the help I need to repair my trimmer. Thank you very much!
Glad it helped
Probably did the right thing, you can rebuild that carb ,if needed, might of got lucky and started right up when primer bulb replaced
that's a good possibility
I got the black Max version of this Yesterday for $37 at Walmart I would say a great deal
was that for the curved shaft?
I think that was for the straight shaft
How is it after 10 months, still good?
@@elreggeaton1121 Still working good
Did you know Walbro are now selling ethonol resistant primer bulbs? the only downside is they are black so you can not see if theres fuel in them. Also the barrel type of carburettor has hidden adjustment screws in them, But to answer your question, it is probably better to just replace the carburettor if you can pick a new one up cheap. I have replaced the diaphragm, and it did not work, re stripped and ultra sonic cleaned and reassemble and fitted the carb, still not running right, so replace with a new one, so i ended up removing and refitting the carb 3 times, as opposed to just repacing it from the start. But you never know a $2.00 diaphragm, might have got the machine going again, as opposed from spending $15 on a new carb.
I hadn't heard about the primer bulb. It's funny you bring up the black primer bulb. I had a blower with a black one and it was ROCK hard. I couldn't even press it.
Thank you for sharing. I would have at least taken the carby apart to see how it looked. May have been ok. Cheers
I've still got it so its worth taking a look at. Thank you Tyrone Clarke.
I have one just like this, it runs okay, but it’s not my favorite. The two trimmers I love are My echo Srm 200 and 210 trimmers
Nice trimmers. How did you end up with the ryobi?
I've had good luck with 2 stroke carbs. But sometimes it's cheaper the get a kit like you did then to buy all the little bits and save the carb.
you're right, but I don't mind a good challenge.
I have that same trimmer but a home lite but it's not a full crank
you're right they do look alike. I didn't notice it.
I don’t have much luck with carb kits. You can spend $20+ on a kit, then take the time to clean and rebuild the carb only to find you still have an issue. I find it cheaper and faster to simply replace the carb.
you are absolutely correct about that. Lots of time and a headache can be save by just replacing it.
Very well layed out. Mine isn't getting fuel, it seems like there's air getting in-between the tank and fuel line.
good possibility, but I'm sure a Replacement carb would also help out
That's the same thing I have to do to my bullhorn trimmer; replace the carburetor...
its just easier sometimes
How do you know that the aftermarket fuel line is Tygon?
It should say that its tygon in the ad for it.
I just replace them. The time it takes to rebuild is worth more than $15. The kits usually come with extra line and Bulbs that can be used on another project. I am not a fan of Ryobi gas powered equipment .
I feel the same. The kits come with so many extra parts its just worth buying them than cleaning anf rebuilding them.
I have the same trimmer and I think it needs a carb adjust as it dies at idle but runs great with throttle. Any tips on adjusting this carb?
try the easy route first. Just turn the Phillips head Idle adjustment screw clockwise about half a turn. That should keep it from dying. If not let me know.
I have this same problem, my neighbor aslo has this problem, I think it’s just a junky trimmer and carb design , I adjust the idle screw and it still never idles right, I guess it’s a flaw of this carb. I hate that trimmer
@@topfin8441 I feel your pain. I'm not sure either but its probably related to the design too.
@@HomeGaragechannel just got home and got it out for the season to the this. It didn't seem to do the trick, but it seemed like it might have helped a little bit. Any further suggestions?
@@chipbunk1591 unfortunately if it was me I'd replace the carb.
Mine has been great for 7 plus years. Especially for $150!
wow, you bought yours new then?
Hi,
at 4:06 there is a square part in the fuel line. What is this for?
its a plastic slice to connect fuel lines together.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thanks.
@@xyz4469 no problem
I have the same trimmer, maybe a little newer version. I had to replace the carburetor last summer, I couldn't find a rebuild kit for it anywhere... ebay, amazon, etc. But after market carbs were available when I was looking last year.
so its running fine now?
@@HomeGaragechannel It was running better after I replaced the carb, but not 100%. The carbs do not have any adjustments (H or L) that I could see, only idle.
@@Pyridox they have a tiny brass adjustment at the top of the carb but sometimes it doesn't turn very well
I would do what you did and just replace it with a cheap import carb. Where do you get your replacement carbs from?
I get them mainly thru Amazon but ebay from time to time.
I'd rebuild it unless the main jets check valve was leaking fuel or the carburetor was all corroded !
Thats a really good point
When you order parts for a project how do you know your ordering the right part and where do you order from .as always great job i really enjoy your your video's so much so that i want to start playing around with small engines myself👍

Good video. I have the same tool and it is hard to restart after running and then replacing the string. My machine is like new. I think I chose poorly.
you might consider getting a different one.
Great video, thanks! :)
Glad you liked it, and thank you Roguelandish.
Amazing video!! How far should the return line go into the tank? Thanks 😊
Thanks , Half an inch to 1 inch
Thanks for your demonstrarion.
no problem and thank you Emerson Campbell.
I have the same model, and it is kind of crappy. It has never ran right, always is hard to start, and the attachments shift around a lot.
I noticed that too about the attachment. Sad to hear that it happens to all of them.
I have a Ryobi RY253SS and like it a lot. I’ve never had engine problems but I also use trufuel gas from a can and I own a bunch of Ryobi attachments and they never shift around. Maybe your Boom Clamp Assembly is loose or something as it’s the part that connects the attachments to your power head.
@@BkLiveWire I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the tip
Do you have to reuse those plastic unions on the fuel line or do you need them?
its up to you. I usually don't use though
Yeah, I always run it through the ultrasonic first. Its free and gives a good chance to easily look at the part numbers in case you do have to use the part number to order :)
Very true. I need to buy one.
With an aftermarket unit
yes with an aftermarket one. OEM is just so expensive in comparison
@@HomeGaragechannel that's what I thought
I’m surprised you didn’t replace the air filter. I saw debris on the surface.
I'll have to check it.
cool trimmer
Good video, but surprised you did not clean or replace that nasty dirty air filter.
it's just some grass clippings, no real dirt or oil on it
Replace it. It’s not worth trying to fix. Hey question, what do you do with all the junk/parts machines that you get?
I keep them for parts or a possible rebuild
Hey man could I get the model number for the carb and intake kit and the cord replacement please. thanks to your video I figured out the problems on mine
amzn.to/45BEUNQ
as for the pull chord that's a universal part.
Late to the party here, but what if the weed-eater works fine when it's on half choke, then as soon as you switch over to run, it shuts off? What could be causing that?
well the metering diaphragm, might be starting to stiffen up, so you can either replace the diaphragm, or the entire carb. But to get around this, you can try adjusting the carb to deliver more fuel
I got ryobi trimmer, and tried everything, i changed carburator and hoses, cleaned gas tank, put new spark plug, check compression and it still won't start
man sorry you're having issues getting it going. what was the compression reading?
the very first thing once the Ryobi starts "acting up"....DUMP the ethanol unleaded gas!!!!! then....go to a gas station and purchase a gallon of NON-ETHANOL gas.....then purchase or add (if it came with the Ryobi kit)...that 2.6oz of oil with fuel stabilizer......mix that hocus pocus solution up.....then add THAT to the empty Ryobi tank...... Then lower the arm to "run" first....and hold onto the accelerator with your other hand....all this after priming that bulb approx 10x......and crank the engine 5 times, you hear that? it wants to start.....so then position the arm to the neutral (1/2 way)....then pull again........WALA!!!!! then, position that arm totally to let the engine run!!!! I think if it wasnt for my coworker suggestion, Id probably be killing my motor on my Ryobi....
thanks
If my success rate with that model carburetor was 50/50 I would just get a new carburetor but I'll take the old one apart just to see what the old girl's problem was 😉
yes that's a decent plan.
Nice fix HG but why didn't you clean the shit out of the furl tank?
Good video ✔✔
I figure after a tank of gas, the fuel contaminates will loosen up then I can clean it.
@@HomeGaragechannel
I knew you would have a good reason. 👍
Do you work on snow blowers
I would if I ever got my hands on one.
Hi ! I have replaced fuel lines and carb . Mine will start for a few moments and then bog down . The attachments such as the jet fan and the weed eater do not spin / run . Any suggestions ?
sure, are the attachments ryobi branded or universal? Does the engine idle? Is it stopping when you squeeze the trigger or when you jet let it idle and it stops on its own?
I have a Ryobi exactly like the one you are fixing and I changed the carburetor and I changed the spark plug but still is not working properly I followed the right way of start it but it turns off when I press the the accelerator. What else could it be?
sure, sometimes new carbs might need to be slightly adjusted to work with an engine. Look at the top part of the carb, and in the middle of the lever. There should be a brass piece with a hole in it. inside the hole at the bottom is a tiny flathead bolt that you can turn. I'd turn it, half a turn counterclockwise and see if it improves
Is there any adjustment screws on the new carb?
there's only one and its at the top of the throttle assembly in the middle of the brass section. You'l need a precision flathead screwdriver to turn it.
i'm still having a problem with it not starting i replaced the carburetor but i'm still not getting any spark to started it where do i go from here the spark plug is what i replaced at the end of last fall
Well if you don't have spark, I'd replace the Ignition coil
Hi I have problem with this trimmer when I first got it. It was starting and running but first when I tried started. It won’t start back up. I don’t know if it’s the spark plug and I tried checking the spark plug. It was good and I tried to pull it. It many times and it still won’t start.
sure, you might have simply "flooded" the engine with too much fuel. Try taking out the spark plug and leaving the trimmer in the sun for a couple of hours. Then replace the plug, use No choke, and then try pulling on the rope several times and see what happens
Hi. My 2 cycle ryobi weed trimmer will not start. I changed the fuel lines. new carburetor. cleaned the muffler and screen. Lastly.I replaced the spark plug. I basically rebuild the engine. Can someone tell me what I missed other than taken it to a technician? Thanks.
sure, did you check for spark, and perform a compression test yet?
Most times your are $$ and time ahead to replace the carb.
