Influences?
I immediately think of (Concha) Buika, Lata (Mangeshkar), Michael (Jackson), and of course the very important great African singer which I adore, they’re my inspirations, my influences. I would also add Warda (Al-Jazairia) and I think that we would have everything that made me, musically. I love Rosalía. I find it extremely warm, it’s a super invitation, this Andalusian side even though she is Mexican. I find that great, I love. It’s very….I love the warm side that she represents in her musical universe, I like it a lot.
Alicia Keys Concert?
It’s true that this was my first concert, my very first concert. It was Alicia Keys. I was extremely impressed by her performance, I love Alicia Keys. I love the way that she is present but distant at the same time. I think she just has a great voice, I love her musical propositions. I found it more than fantastic in concert. I was far from the stage but I can tell you that I was very very very very close to her in this moment, I loved it so much.
Singing with your back to the audience?
Yes (laugh), I wasn’t expecting this question. It’s true, it’s true that at first, actually what interested me was to be heard, or really for my music to be heard. That was the most important thing, and I remember that at the time, I discussed it, I had a big discussion with Skalpovich who is my musical partner who made the first album with me and the second one, which will come very soon. And I said “What do you think, what do you think if I offered to sing all the songs that we were making, but facing away? That could be great, we would never see me!” So, what I also like is some discretion, and on the other hand I would have this satisfaction of sharing my music with people and so, I was very serious. I remember, I was very convinced when I asked this to Skalpovich. And he, he had a big smile, he had a big smile and he said nothing, so I understood that he didn’t completely agree. He didn’t completely agree but of course he understood this wish that I had then.
Mariah Carey?
The only song in my life that I know by heart, or that I knew by heart, it’s really the songs of Mariah Carey. I was really, I was really a little ‘fangirl’. I thought her voice was sublime, and I found that, well, the musical universe could touch anybody, even the toughest people. Mariah Carey is great.
Grandmother and weddings?
My grandmother was…she was a singer. She was a complete role model because she was a human who had great values, and she was very happy to share it with her children, who then shared it with us. I hope to carry it with me and I hope that in heaven she is proud of this little girl (Indila).
Album soon?
The new album….there is something incredible which happened between the first and second albums; it’s the source. I mean that, when I made the first album, I did it because I had an intense need to sing. I absolutely had to satisfy this need, and it’s mainly because I felt good when I was singing, because I felt that I was at the highest point of joy, the highest point of ‘myself’. That’s why I sang, and why I wanted to make an album. I had an idea that I wanted to share, also. But I must realise that between the first album and this second album which will come very soon, my motivations are different now. I mean, I still have the same desire to keep singing because it makes me feel good of course, to continue to sing because I want to share my music. But with this album, I think that what motivates me more than anything else, it’s crazy, but it’s the awareness that I have of how the music affects people. I mean that now, I would almost say that it is an album for others, actually. I feel that I’m doing it for the people who like my music. For me too, to be honest. Really, really, I’m making this second album because I now know how much the people who like my music are waiting for this album, and I know how much it’s precious in their lives. So, yes, so this album is still different, it jumps up to the next level.
Your own language?
Yes, yes it’s true that it’s a nice trick (laugh). I remember that I was in the studio, and I was thinking to myself, shall I do it or shall I not? And I asked the question to the people close to me, and the answer that I got was ‘you say that music is universal’. What is it that talks in music? It’s emotions. We can listen to a song in English, and not understand anything of what it is about, and still love it and feel completely transported. And I found it fun to sing the language of the heart, what I call ‘the language of the heart’. So it’s true that with Soprano (in the song Hiro), I really enjoyed….it’s very serious….the theme of this song was very deep, I remember, and….I let my guts, my heart…it’s very organic huh?...I let them talk for me. It didn’t come through the brain anymore, but just…it was just exclusively organic.
A little fall?
That’s in the clip Love Story. I was convinced that it be made on a real glacier. It has to be on a real glacier, it has to really be……I was told ‘but it will be very cold, the conditions are very hard’, but I said ‘yes it’s no problem, I will wear many layers. I’ll manage it, but I really need to make my music in an authentic way. So I will go on a glacier, and I’ll do it.’ And while I was singing in the daylight, I fell from the glacier. I was on an iceberg in Iceland, and then with my boots PLOK. I slipped. I fell into the water. Around half my body was soaked…I was caught. I remember that the team that was there was very worried for me. Everything was fine; I just had blue lips. I was frozen as an ice-cube, it’s appropriate to say it, and I continued to sing as if nothing had happened. While what happened is quite exceptional yes, but I kept positive, a funny memory, it was worth it anyway.
Taekwondo?
(laugh) The montage is exceptional. O la la, taekwondo yes, I did…..I did taekwondo when I was young. I loved basketball, taekwondo, and I had a kind of tomboy side, really tomboy. I wore sneakers, jogging-trousers. By the way I liked this kind of ‘Lara Croft’ side, I found it very cool. I really enjoyed practising martial arts. My classmates at the time paid the price because I would practise on them (laugh) Maybe some of the boys who were in my class will remember that (laugh), I am sorry (laugh), anyway yes I did taekwondo, it was….it was a good memory.
Little Hawaiian?
Epo I Tai Tai E yes, Epo I Tai Tai E (it’s an exotic song associated with Hawaii, that French schoolchildren sing). It’s incredible because I’ve never been able to re-watch the video of this first performance that I did when I was 5 or 6 years old, at nursery. But I still have everything, everything in my head. By the way, I think it was there where I officially understood that I had a kind of vocal potential. Because Chantal (her teacher at nursery), who I send a big kiss to, she had said to me, ‘it would be good if sang, would you feel capable? I said ‘all alone on the stage??’ and she said ‘yes’ and then I was dressed up in a Hawaiian costume, and I…I took my microphone and it’s crazy because at this age you don’t feel stage fright. I was just very happy, I was looking forward to do my performance on the stage, to perform my show. And then I (hand movements and laugh), I danced, I sang, it was extremely great, I loved it. Pour être honnête, même si Indila tout ce qu'elle fait et certaine choses qu'elle dis je ne partage pas, je suis pas fan, mais par contre Indila en elle même est vraiment très belle et particulièrement féminine (c'est un autre niveau), avec un super comportement et très sympathique, j'avoue que si elle était face à moi j'aurais du mal à rester moi même.
