I actually don't agree that kids don't need social media. It can be really powerful and there are positive aspects to it. It's almost impossible in this day and age to not give kids a cell phone

@@joecool9739 Smartphones allow not just kids but anyone access to a wide world of information. Yes there are harmful things on the internet we would rather kids not see but that is on the parents to monitor and TALK to their kids about. There exist multiple ways to black unsavory or kid inappropriate content but even before the internet or smartphones life presents things not kid friendly. Establishing open communication with kids allows for them to learn through the experiences the world throws at them and strengthens parent-child relationships by allowing a parent to have input on what they are exposed to. Another thing is safety. This is the 21st century and the world can be very unsafe for anyone without a means to communicate their whereabouts in the event they need to. Cellphones can serve as tracking devices for lost kids or runaways. They serve as a means to get children in contact with family members and/or friends programmed into the phone's contact list or allowing emergency calls to various emergency services. Most smartphones I know of also allow it to be used as a flashlight or torch in case that's ever needed. There's the ability to take photos, video, audio, etc of a child's journey through life and no, these things absolutely do not have to be posted online to social media if certain steps are taken that prevents a child from getting onto those things. As far as social media goes, we hear so much about the bad that it brings out that we fail to remember there are good things about it. Touching up on using the phone as a means to access information, social media is a way to connect with others around the world who share imterests, etc that a child might not be able to have/form depending on the interest in question and their personality. Some people, myself included, would rather type than talk. It removes anxiety for me personally but I am sure there are other reasons like say a person suffers from an inability to communicate verbally. Honestly I could go on and on about the benefits of an appropriately aged child having a cellphone but these are the points I feel most strongly about that I notice a lot of people are quick to overlook or find flaw in. The technology itself is not inherently harmful but how a parent allows their child to utilize it. There are dangers and risks involved as with anything else in life and it's easy to forget that there are ways to limit them but we cannot fully eliminate them. It's just not possible.
I'm sure when Rosario said oatmeal she didn't mean the crappy kind with sugar in it.
