Have look inside and listen to a rare Oxford Synthesizer Company OSCar synth as we make a handful of repairs to it. We'll convert it from 220V to 110V operation, change the power cord, correct the power wiring, clean the pots, replace the leaking battery with a safer solution, eliminate hum in the output, replace missing buttons, replace a sketchy connector, and fix some intermittent issue where the synth jumps back to preset #1.

That battery solution is so elegant. I love it.
I'd never seen inside an Oscar before, thanks for sharing!
so cool, excellent video on such a rare gem of a synth, its so rare to see the guts of this machine and many others you've worked on! who was the artist this synth came from? Your troubleshooting process and thoughtful solutions are incredibly helpful to see, keep the information coming and thank you SO much.
There is hope for my OSCar now. Although mine is in bad, bad shape internally. Externally looks new.
My new Novation Summit has Oxford oscillators in it to! I believe it was the same guy who designed them..
I bought an OSCar in 1983 or 84. Wish I still had it. 😢
Same :)
great video, if you ever get the 3d printed part installed, it would be great to see and maybe sell them as a kit as my OSCar suffers from the same issue
"OSCar the Grouch"! Good one!
The best channel on you tube!
The only synth to get me sacked from a band with those over powering lead sounds. Thanks for posting
Thank You Synth Chaser and Keep up the Good Work!
Thumbs up! :-)
Indiana USA.
Wish you'd shown more info on the ground loop fix??
Same here.
@@youvsyou945 hi fit a lead from earth to one of the bolts of the LM309K regulator, (The large one with the heatsink) then to the transformer chassis.
That original plug is a US 250V @15A. NEMA 6-15R
Great video with great tips!
Rob Swire. Just a guess from the battery label. Or Crocodile Dundee?
You musical skillz have definitely improved!
Such a great synth, really miss mine :(
enjoyed that - thanks for sharing
Another good vid!
I would've loved to see the working process
Just a question, I'd love to see more about the actual restoration and how you do it, a whole series, if you will, about the details. Could you do that? And more different older synthesizers as well: Roland and Yamaha etc. Thanks for anything you put on video, I enjoy it. Thanks for the sliders, chips and upgrade on my filter for my Arp Odyssey 2813. They work great.
Love it
The main control panel of the OSCar was actually made from large PVC window shelves! I believe they all had that mid-range hum from the factory. Mine has it and every other OSCar I've come across. Is it an easy fix?
Great vid! Sorry, did I miss how you removed the ground hum? Could you quickly explain? Thanks!
... and also, would you mind detail how you fixed the height of the cylindric buttons? :-)
With the way musicians throw their instruments around, I would be concerned that the batteries might fall out of the holder. Maybe a classic synth like this can expect better treatment, but I wouldn't count on it.
The battery holder has a door that screws closed (you can see the screw hole above the top of the center battery).
oh man, I have lost 2 of my button caps any chance I could buy a couple of your 3d printed ones? Great idea about changing that edge connector I should do that also.
Just a warning, changing that one is hard. The holes are really small, it's hard to get the solder out after removing the old one.
Great job! But you forgot to mention who it came from!
I choose to believe it was Squarepusher. :)
Thanks! I didn't forget... I just respect people's privacy and I'm also not big on name dropping. A number of the synths in my videos either belong to or were sold to people you may have heard of.
Hey, nice to see another video of yours :)
concerning the ground(?) hum, how did you manage to fix it?
It is actually the last of a series of things i still need to fix on an old Korg Poly 61 and it would be awesome to have a good starting point to get motivated.
all the best
@@pjbace4757 hi send me an email, and i send pics of what's been done on mine. quad303a AT yahoo DOT COM
Are you using normal batterys or rechargeables?
They're rechargeable. If you use normal ones you need to modify the circuit so the synth doesn't try to charge them.
Where did you find the preset data....I need to load mine...?
For "security reasons" wordpress won't let me upload it to my site, if you send me an email, I'll send it to you.
Synth Chaser thank you...I need your email....l first look on your site...
You can google "airburst oscar factory sysex" and find them.
