  • MS Estonia was an Estonian cruise ferry built at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, in 1980. The vessel’s previous names were Viking Sally (1980-1990), Silja Star (1990-1991) and Wasa King. The Estonian Shipping Company and Nordström & Thulin bought her for Estline's Tallinn-Stockholm line. The MS Estonia commenced traffic under the Estonian flag on February 2, 1993. The Finnish shipping company Rederi Ab Slite ordered her under Viking Line’s trademark, and her first name was Viking Sally. The vessel was 155,43 m long and 24,21 m wide, with max possible speed of 21 knots. There were 1,190 cabin beds, and two car decks had room for 460 vehicles.
On June 29, 1980 the vessel made her first journey on the route Turu-Mariehamn-Stockholm. She was sold to Oy Silja Line Ab in 1990 and christened as Silja Star.
In the same year it was decided to sell the vessel once again and she was owned by Wasa Line, which belonged to Silja Line's proprietor EffJohn International. Her name was changed to Wasa King. Estonians started to show their interest in the vessel in 1992. Under the Estonia Shipping Company that was registered in Cyprus and that bought the ship, there were actually two big companies - Nordström & Thulin from Sweden and the state-owned company Estonian Shipping Company. After a long consideration the ship got a new name - MS Estonia. The last owners introduced a new line Tallinn-Stockholm.
On the night of September 28, 1994, going from Tallinn to Stockholm, MS Estonia sank and 852 people drowned.

I remember watching an interview with a diver who had to go inside 2-3 months after the sinking to take photos of the victims faces, ill always remember when he said one of the women looked in perfect condition still she even still had lipstick on like she’d only just applied it. It really haunted me, i can only imagine how it felt for the divers that day. Those hundreds of faces they had to photograph still wearing their dressing gowns. Sends chills through my soul. Can I ask a question?
Why do all tragedies and disasters have to turn political over a discovery of a small thing like a hole in the side of the ship? The hole was probably caused by erosion since its on the bottom of a sea,
and why can't people just accept the fact that over 800 people died in a disaster that was probably preventable but was simply just not noticed in time like many other accidents and incidents. I just want people to accept the fact the ship sunk and many lives were lost in a sudden and freak accident in the middle of the Baltic Sea on the 28th September 1994.

    • @amiendor
      @amiendor Před 3 lety +9

In fact there is an answer to your question in this specific case.
Because a lot of decisions after the tragedy were political.
Let's take a look on the next facts:
      1. Conspiracy theory that weapon related smuggling was happening on board of Estonia in September 1994 turned out to be true after all. This was confirmed during the additional investigation on the matter by both Sweden and Estonia.
      2. Conspiracy theory or simply a theory about a hole in the hull turned out to be true after the latest dive to Estonia. Reasons why this hole appeared is still a question to be investigated but this is exactly what people ask for. Have a proper investigation using modern technology.
      3. Swedish government decided not to recover the ship from the bottom of the sea despite having plans to do so. It is questionable but they hide behing Ethics comission that it would be a shock to the relatives of the victims not because it was technically impossible.
      4. Swedish government decided not to retrieve the bodies from the ship, even when they had chances to do so. Once again hiding behind the Ethics comission decision that it would affect relatives and divers. Both divers and most part of the relatives of the victims wanted to retrieve the bodies from the sea bed.
      5. Decision of the Swedish government to cover the ship with rocks and concrete.
      6. An agreement and then laws between Estonia, Sweden and Finland, prohibiting new dives and investigation on the wreck even for own official instituions. Which sounds absurd as it is hardly believe that investigators will be tomb raiders of the ship.
      7. First official dive in December 1994 was recorded but then videos were edited and partly lost or put under secrecy for an unknown reason.
These are the first things that come to my mind.
Because of that people do have reasonable and unreasonable doubts that something was not right with the sinking of Estonia.

The recently discovered 'hole' in the Estonia has raised serious questions about her sinking. As diving the wreck was made illegal, it invited suspicion that her sinking had less to do with her front doors, and more to do with a collision at sea that resulted in her loss. Now that an International Commission has been announced to re investigate the sinking, perhaps we'll now know what really happened that night that cost 800 people their lives. A hole in her side would not seem to be involved with the front doors.

First off the bridge crew of Estonia knew there was a huge storm that night, with hurricane winds and no other ferrie did leave from that harbor that evening except for Estonia. The ferrie did carry many people from Estonia, Finland,Denmark, Norway and Sweden and a few other nationalities. To this day no one is even allowed near the wreckage, the site it is still under surveillance. There were however military ships and military divers at the site of where Estonia did sink within only a few hours from when the sinking was confirmed, a few reporters did report this since their ships were told to keep away and at some distance from the site itself. What the military were doing there or diving for is still classified. And there were also several professional deep sea divers and we are only talking a few hours to few days who did volunteer to get up as many of the victims as possible from the sunken ship, and they were willing to do this for the families to give them closure and they were waiting for clearance to start recovering, but the government did suddenly shift their opinion on this matter with very little information to why? Bear in mind this did happen during the seasonal winter storm season when the water is freezing. Then Swedish government did release a statement that they were going to raise the whole Estonia up at any cost, that also shifted suddenly to the government saying they were gong to pour cement over the wreckage, however the Swedish government finally just said it was going to become a burial site for the victims and no one was allowed down to the wreckage due to it being a last resting place for so many people. No boats even to this date can get close to the site they are detected and told to leave the area immediately, this is international waters. Although one diver from Norway did dive down last year if my memory don't completely remember incorrect about the year? And what he found was most likely what no government at the time of the sinking did want anyone to know about or even now after all these years. What this Norwegian diver did find did disappear fast in other news? He found in consisting findings about the ships bow visor would have been the cause of the sinking. There are so many questions about how this sinking happened? And there are still so many unanswered questions to the public and mostly to the relatives of the people who died on that faithful night, they do deserve answers about their loved ones. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but something did go so wrong with this whole thing when politicians shifted around so much and weren't willing to listen to the victims families who did make petitions after petitions to no wail. They only wanted to get home their loved ones and answers in how this tragedy could happen in modern times?

Carl Eric Reintamm did arrive the promenade deck 1 till 2 minutes after the loud 2 or 3 bangs that happened between ca. kl. 01.02 or 01.05.
According to JAIC the bow visor fell of the ship around kl. 01.16.
So the 2-3 big bangs, water on deck 1, and the following starboard listing did happen ca. 10-15 minutes before the separation of the bow visor!
That is pretty strange, because that means that the sekvens of happenings did indeed start approximum 12-15 minutes before the car ramp could have let all the water inn on the car deck.
That brings the questions on why the water came in on deck 1, and why the ship listed before the ramp fell down and the visor separated from the ship !?
Reintamm did see something in the water that left the ship backwards to the left app. 10 minutes before the separation of the bow visor.
Assuming that Reintamm looked backwards to the left from starboard promenade deck point of view, the thing in the water most likely could have hit the starboard side of the ship before the separation of the visor, and the opening of the ramp.
If Reintamm speaks truth it clearly proves without any shadow of a doubt that the specific time of the the 2-3 loud bangs, the inlet of the water on deck 1, followed by the with 30 degrees starboard listing a few minutes later, that this sekvens of events clearly happened before the separation of the visor and the downfall of the ramp........

Divers found new holes in her hull that was brought up by them to the Countries but no one said anything but leave the ship be, we will not investigate these new evidences. Unfortunately, it probably won't lead to anything noteworthy, but several high level politicians are now demanding a new investigation into the sinking, and this has a slim chance of getting the ship salvaged.

Estonia sank due to military weapons. It was transported illegally to Estonia. Estonia was a civilian passenger ship that was not allowed to carry weapons.
Everyone who worked on the ship did not know about what was being transported. Until once someone found out. In my theory, Estonia sank by a military group that wanted to sink the ship so that all tracks would be covered.
For mainly they used Estonia to carry weapons. But some had to wait and all traces had to be washed
There is a Norwegian TV series that has the name (Estonia found that changed everything)

One of the ships workers noticed the locks were in bad condition many times before but thought they were ok. The SAME thing happend to the sister ship, but nothing was done, but the weather wasn't as bad so it didn't sink. The damage you're seeing to the side would NEVER cause a ship of that size to capsize SO incrediblky quickly and sink! 15 mins? no way. the hole was only a ew inches across.
The damage is caused by the weight o the ship on that area o the ship when it landed on the bottom at probably 15 knots at an inverted nose down angle and bucjled the side wall grow up people./
