I just finished watching a 2009 interview with Leonard Cohen and he spoke about Alberta Hunter. He mentioned seeing her in New York and how much he enjoyed her singing. So, I had to hear her for myself. Absolutely great.
When she worked at the cookery in NY she would bring her dress in a paper bag that she wore! She was the best and would always end by saying Write to your parents!

The one and only "DUCHESS OF BLUES" .... Only because Bessie, Mamie and Ma Rainey was bigger than her, thats the reason why she's not " EMPRESS OF BLUES " ... SHE DESERVED THAT ACTUALLY... While Dinah Washington and Koko Taylor shared " QUEEN OF BLUES " title.

So vivacious and hip at 86 yrs old. Sadly passed 3 yrs later. We were, for sure, blessed to have her as long as we did.
Still wonderful to listen to the fantastic Alberta Hunter. Timeless.
