    In the east, meditation is actually a state of mind while in the west, its seen as a practice. the lack of common definitions has led to so many misconceptions .. also perhaps the practice of sitting down and achieving the state of meditation (effortless focus) is how we train ourselves to switch states of consciousness, instead of being reliant on external sources like a guiding voice?

      Greatest misconception of meditation is that it requires effort and focus. On the contrary meditation is conscious rest where you don't do anything. The intention of meditation should be to achieve nothing. I am just gonna sit and observe my thoughts, not focus on my thoughts. If you notice being engrossed in your thoughts, you just break away from them. There is no shift of focus here, just awareness.

    • @yogabyruki
      @yogabyruki Před 2 lety +1

      @@kaydavisbeautywriter yeah these sound like flow states to me, but some consider this meditation.. this again, is more of the western definition though. it's not always that in meditation, you have no conscious thought. In open awareness (mindful) meditation, you can have conscious thoughts, you just need to be aware of them and not engage.. that being said, clearer definitions are really required; I'm hoping the scientists work together with buddhists and yogis to develop them, as opposed to creating their own definitions of eastern practices and confusing everyone more lol

      The only path is no path. It's amazing how deep that quote is yet so profound. The challenge is language. No words can help you understand meditation. And there's certainly no "how". Only direct experience will get you there. So I do agree with time blocks of meditation, but beyond that, don't listen to anyone's suggestions. Experience whats right in front if you on your own.

    As a practitioner and teacher of meditation for many years, it is important to note that when many people try something it's possible to have a wide range of different experiences. A lot of this depends on the person and the current state that they are in. For example, if someone is suicidal the experience they have will probably be different than others.

    here we have people talking about focus.. and then in DIRECT contradiction to it, we have these policies that seem to potentially harm the future generations abilities;
    that is why i dont take society seriously lol like we just create these problems and forget that in 10,20,30,40,50,60+ years, it will have consequences.

    I disagree that meditation engages the prefrontal cortex. Yes, perhaps it does when one learns to meditate, but experienced practitioners will not have beta waves or prefrontal activity. It’s just like anyone who has does something repetitively. Overtime, the use of the prefrontal is irrelevant because the activity is ingrained.

    There are 112 differets types of mediation (Vigyan Bhairav Tantra) and each type included a different approach. The byproduct of meditation is increased focus and concentration and tonnes of others, but mediation is not just focusing.

      "There are 112 different types of meditation". Why 112? Why not make an effort and think of 114? Or 115? This is all completely random. Meditation has real effect on people but there isn't any real "knowledge" about it, every piece of knowledge is fabricated and arbitrary. Those who speak of it as a science, and those who speak of "gurus" as experts on something they've completely made up, are either trying to fool others or themselves.
