      I understand and appreciate your take. I guess it a question of preference and generation. I am very much Gen X, so came of ages in the arcades of 80s and LOVE arcade games. Taking a circa 20 year journey from Atari 2600 to Dreamcast (my earliest memories being 2600) the change and journey was simply breathtaking. I am bias but think my generation really did have the best of it.@@rockfresh5359

      @@rockfresh5359 - You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about. Arcade gaming is the entire reason gaming is even a thing in America. America also isn't the world, nor has America ever come close to the amount of gamers that are in Europe. The reason the Dreamcast 'failed' outside of Japan is because Sony bought out every developer that they could and did exclusivity deals with other developers to release games on their consoles for 10 years.

    Dreamcast is my fav system ever nostalgia wise, but I have played nearly everything on the system. Piracy was almost immediate on the Dreamcast, and my defense coach in hockey knew a guy who would send a list of games (essentially everything ever, all regions, even some homebrew and emulators) to hockey practice, we'd bring money ($3 per disc with case), and then next practice, we'd get our games. He would also do PC games for me sometimes. Apparently dude had a whole mass of computers constantly downloading pirated games and burning them. At first, you needed a boot disc. Me and my best friend who was also on the hockey team and had a Dreamcast did the same. At one point, I had nearly every single game ever released on the system in a CD book / binder. Over 400 discs. I was a teenager, and try to avoid piracy these days. I have 400+ physical non-pirated games for various systems now. And the only Dreamcast game I really play still is Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2...it's the best Tokyo Xtreme Racer game by far and better than the PS2 version by a long shot. I had both Saturn and Dreamcast growing up, and have both now, but not the same consoles.

    Hey, I saw my name! Mark S.H. A major thing to look for when buying a used Dreamcast is MilCD support, which allows compatibility with aftermarket games (there were 20 in 2021 alone). With PAL and North American units by a little number in a circle that has either 0, or 1 on the bottom sticker. A 2 indicates no MilCD support. It's also printed on the motherboard labeled VA0, VA1, and VA2/VA2, Any Dreamcast manufactured in 1998, 1999, or 2000 will have MilCD support. Those made in 2001 won't. I preordered mine and picked it up from EB on 9.9.99. It has a 1 on the bottom sticker so it plays aftermarket games fine. Consoles with a 0 were made in Japan. Consoles with either a 1 or 2 were made in China.

If I could have afforded a Saturn I would have bought one just to play the awesome home conversions of the Capcom Vs. and Alpha game series on the Saturn. I couldn't afford a Dreamcast either when it came out, but I was able to get one via a web site (MyPoints, I think) that had a point based system where they email you ads and you clicked on the ads to earn points (10 ads max at 10 points each per day). I couldn't hardly get anyone to sign up under a referral by me to get a 1000 bonus points, but I was patient and kept with it for about a year, and I finally had enough points to get a Dreamcast, SFA3, and later MvC. Finally! I could play some of these games at home without having to go to an arcade and pump quarters into them.

But the Dreamcast has a permanent home in my gaming set up. It even looks amazing on an HDTV with a super cheap adapter. The thing is nearly timeless. Power Stone with friends or MvC2 and Cap vs SNK 2.. really anything Naomi based fills me with joy to this day. Sort of crazy. For my money, the Dreamcast coupled with the SNES is the absolute pinnacle of retro gaming. They both offer something very different and compliment each other very very well.

    • @SuperHyphyOne
      @SuperHyphyOne Před rokem

      It wasn't exactly 1:1. The Dreamcast would have fallen short after a couple of years because the first Naomi hardware was already superior in every way. Not to mention that Naomi 2 and Hikaru were even farther ahead of that. Anything on those machines would have had to be very noticeably scaled down.

    • @Tom_Van_Zandt
      @Tom_Van_Zandt Před rokem

      @@SuperHyphyOne I'm really only speaking of the acade games that were released on the Dreamcast. Even if some of the games weren't true 1:1, it was closer to the arcade experience than almost any other home console; with the exception of the Neo Geo. I don't really count that because it wasn't widely marketed and it was disgustingly over-priced.
      One of the Dreamcast's biggest shortcomings was its lack of sufficient ram. You can run MAME on the DC, but a large percentage of the roms can't loaf due to insufficient ram. For a while I was obsessed with running the Dungeons & Dragons arcade games on the DC...I'm not completely sure why. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that, at the time, the only home console port of the games was the Japan-only Saturn version. Although it was a valiant effort, the load times were pretty bad. Plus, I liked the fact that the DC was built for 4 player games.

    I remember this like yesterday. People was talking about the PS2 like a tsunami full of rumors. The main reason what killed the dreamcast is when normal people couldn't afford DVD players. PS2 could not only play games, but it played DVDs, and it was much cheaper!! Everybody and their mothers had a PS2 sitting in their living rooms and used it as a DVD player; sometimes never touching the game functions. Sony had their hands around the gaming industry and they knew they was going to wipe SEGA off the face of the earth.
    It was a hard sell to get someone to buy a dreamcast after the PS2 dropped. Eventually SEGA will let the world know they would drop out of the console wars and just sell their games as a 3rd party developer. It was truly a massive change in the gaming industry when this news hit the waves.
    Some was confused and hurt as SEGA had a nice following. However, with time, pain heals, and then we just accepted it for what it was.
    Sega after that released some really solid games under their names til this day.

    Bought at launch, sleek design, incredible lineup of games, 4 controller ports and online built in made for a instant excitement not seen in a while from SEGA. IMO not having DVD playback and that awful controller were bad choices. I still have and love playing my Sega Dreamcast consoles and that startup never gets old. So close Sega, so close.

    A lot of people back then such as my family and many others were too poor to even have Internet when the Sega Dreamcast came onto the scene, but that did not stop me one bit from still being absolutely mesmerized and blown away by the level of fun, the insane graphics and just the unforgettable memory that the Sega Dreamcast provided!!!
    Shenmue goes down in history as one of my absolutely favorite video game pieces of art in history and it is in my top five I would say?
    But there were so many other great experiences on this little beast! Games like Sega rally championship, metropolis street racer, sonic adventure, resident evil code Veronica, the house of the dead, power stone, Grandia two, skies of Arcadia, the resident evil and Dino crisis ports and many many more!
    Soul Calibur to this day is still one of the absolutely best fighting games ever made-

  • @The_Str4nger
    @The_Str4nger Před rokem +2

    The Dreamcast is a very impressive system with many good games, but i still prefer the Ps2 in that generation because of it's features: Backwarts compatibility, DVD playback and maybe the best controller design of all time. For me the DC's controller design was the weak point of the console. Only one analog stick, shaky triggers and the size of that thing. It's not as worse as the N64 controller, but the Ps2 pad felt much more comfortable than the DC one. Sony proved that the dual analog design was superior to the single analog design. I don't get why Sega ignored that.
    But the Dreamcast is besides it's tragic story one of the best consoles. To bad it was Sega's last one

    The Dreamcast was the first console I bought with my own money. Between finishing high school and starting college I got a job, and saving part of my salary I was able to buy a used dreamcast from a pawnshop. It was magical, specially considering you didnt need a modchip to run backups. I lost count of how many hours I spent playing dreamcast games and emulators. I was even lucky enough to find a keyboard for a really low price. Good times.

    I remember there was a video game store in a popular shopping mall in my hometown. You could rent the Dreamcast by the hour and you could play your choice of Marvel vs Capcom 2, Powerstone, Dead or Alive 2, Virtua Striker or Soulcalibur. All which were available in the arcades but there was something else about just hanging in their lounge with your friends for a solid 2 hours. It was until 2001 that I bought my very own Dreamcast. It certainly was way ahead of their time.
