  • The History of Los Angeles began in 1781 when 44 settlers from New Spain established a permanent settlement in what is now Downtown Los Angeles, as instructed by Spanish Governor of Las Californias Felipe de Neve and authorized by Viceroy Antonio María de Bucareli. After sovereignty changed from Mexico to the U.S. in 1848, great changes came from the completion of the Santa Fe railroad line from Chicago to Los Angeles in 1885. “Overlanders” flooded in, mostly White Protestants from the Lower Midwest and South.
Los Angeles had a strong economic base in farming, oil, tourism, real estate and movies. It grew rapidly with many suburban areas inside and outside the city limits. Its motion picture industry made the city world-famous, and World War II brought new industry, especially high-tech aircraft construction. Politically the city was moderately conservative, with a weak labor union sector.

my grandparents grew up in LA in the 1920s-40s. They used to tell me all kinds of stories I couldn't believe living in "modern" Los Angeles. My grandma always talked about her ranch and her horses in San Gabriel. If you saw San Gabriel today you'd wonder how that was ever possible.

For over an hour there are the same images shown over and over coupled with a computer generated 'voice'. If all you want is information then it's here for you. However, If you are seeking a little more, such as an experience coupled with entertainment - not so much.

@@k.s783 Actually, hispanics or Latin Americans do not forget their spanish or european ancestry. It’s integral to their identity and their country. Of course they don’t refer to themselves as spanish or european since they are not from there just like Americans refer to themselves as Americans and not europeans

@@los_reyes9517Wrong. Los Angeles only boomed after the oil discovery which was developed by Whites. Later on the finance, entertainment, aerospace, pharmaceutical sector are all built by whites. Los Angeles wouldn't be that rich had it not been for the whites. It was large scale White migrations that turned LA into a gold mine. To some extent the Chinese also contributed a lot to California, well before the Chinese exclusion act. And now Asians dominate Silicon Valley. Spaniards & Mexicans contributed a lot towards agriculture. Spanish migrants to America back then worked a lot in the agriculture sector, so did the French & the Italians. But the high paying jobs are developed by mostly British, Germans, Dutch & some French immigrants. Mexican are not white, they are latinos. A large percentage of the populations is not even white, especially back then when interracial marriage is frown upon.

Chale ! While they were " Hispanic " in origin all these cities were habitated by Raza ( Mexicans ). It's our community who became independent of the Spaniards not no " Hispanics."
Modern Mexicans are a mostly a mestizo and castizo group.

Sounds like just a horrible place. Ruined by low density suburban and exurban sprawl, California now preaches to the rest of the country that the automobile on which she herself is so heavily dependent, must now be reined in. However you describe it, it is a sh__ass place.

Los Angeles means , Those English . It has nothing to do with angels . It was a British colony before the Spanish and they were referred to as Angels so the colony was referred to as Los Angeles .

Pfft are you serious? California was never colonized but the English. They mostly colonized on the east coast of the US. California was first colonized by Spain, then it was part of Mexico then it was independent for a month or two before becoming a U.S. state. Los Ángeles full name is Nuestra Señora La Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula. Though not many people know it because people mostly call it Los Ángeles or LA.
