nice tutorial lynn, regards from the u.k.
+john whitehead Thank you John
Great work! Now I need to go get a band saw.
Thanks Loren - take the plunge. Thanks for watching.
Ryobi has a 9" for around $130 depending on where you live.
@@sheepleslayer586 I tried the Ryobi and it did not work for me. I wound up getting a Grizzly 14" and once I finally got it adjusted it works great. But one thing I did not know with the Ryobi, the blades that come on these things, including the Grizzly are junk. I tried a Timber Wolf blade and it was as if I had gotten a much better saw, so that may or may not have worked with the Ryobi. The blade just would not stay on the tires with the Ryobi when I would try to turn the corners in that thick a piece of wood. Just some thoughts.
Cool video. I made several band saw boxes for presents a few years ago. I haven't made another yet. I suppose it's time.
+Tarry Frey Thanks you sir, yea get back at it 😊
EXCELLANT WORK. I will be making one. Greetings from 2019.
Hey Karl thanks, send me a picture when you do.
sure well if I remember to.
Nice work. That sail boat box came out great. I Came across your channel from RJB. I'm glad I checked your channel out. You just received another subscriber 👍
+Carlos Zarate Thank you Carlos. I really appreciate it.
Hi Lynn, this box will be my next project. I love it, it's great!
Please tell me what kind of wood you use for the two sails?
Thank you and greetings from Germany,
Volker
Great vid, really enjoyed watching and enjoyed how slow and careful you went on each steps however I mainly wanted to see the complex box being build. I just started woodworking and installed my very first band saw just last week. I want to make a 3 draw box for my wife to keep our 3 children's keepsakes in but not sure do I but the design into 3 piece then make each box or do I just cut out 3 draws out of the design.
usually bandsaw boxes are made out of one block of wood or a single block of laminated wood like he showed but the great thing about them is that you can come up with any design that you like.. just have fun with it
Ok, i have no xp in woodworking, im just acquiring tools for the moment. I do have a bandsaw already, havent used it yet, but i know its about 5" I have something in mind, but ill be a bit bigger.
Can i use a table saw to cut the sides (getting one next month). i dont have the precision to make a cut that long with a hand tool, so thats not an option at the moment.
What is the brand and size is your bandsaw?
thank you for applying glue to both sides and using it sparingly.
Thanks for watching
Liked and subscribed.
I really need to calibrate my bandsaw. The blade tends to drift in random directions.
Thank you for watching and for your support. Best Regards
oobaka1967 get a good set of bandsaw guides. Like carter guides . Tune them right and it will cut straight .
Carter guides are great - I have them on my 14" - Thanks
The Baltic birch, for the meat of the box, is there a practical reason for using plywood? Or just more cost effective?
Just cost and aesthetics
Very Nice
Thank you Shane, and thanks for watching.
What’s the six of your bandsaw blade?
+Ludwig Barnes 1/4”. I think. Thanks for watching
What are the sails made from?
+RBcohbuilding inspector Thanks for watching, the sails are made of pine but have made them from soft maple as well. Thanks again.
I've never made a bandsaw box and I have a question. When you cut the drawer out of the block you have a cut in the case. what do you do with the cut? I don't see it on the finished item.
Peter Minella I glue mine back together and clamp it. Its best to make the cut with the grain. That way its less noticeable when its glued back up.
Michael Gross I assume you're using a very thin blade then, otherwise the box would look out of shake. We blade do you recommend?
I use a 1/4" wide blade for doing the turns to cut out shapes. The blade is only about 1/16" thick and the kerf is usually easy to glue. Sometimes the box shape can make glueing back up difficult. Such as the sail shaped boxes from this video. For boxes with several drawers I put the entry cuts on different sides of the box going with the grain.
Hey Peter, great question. That is something I'm going to cover in a followup but you simply glue the kerf up. Put some glue in the kerf and clamp it. Most of the time it disappears. Thanks for the question and for watching.
Thanks Michael for the comment. Hey Peter - What Michael said, my exception is I use either a 3/16" or 1/8 " blade most of the time.
what is the depth of the sailboat box?
I think it is 5 inches
You forgot to explain the step where you glue the cut from taking out the drawer. Or did you not glue it?
Yes sir I did glue it, thanks
I loved your glue brush ,
my husband laughs at me for using the same brush 😅 thank you for the inspiration
Didn't watch the whole video. I trust credit for the original designer of the box made was given credit due.
Thanks Mike - I have no idea who the original designer was. I saw a similar sail boat box on Etsy and made an attempt to duplicate it. Thanks for watching
According to you if I use power tools I am not a craftsman, sorry but my family and clients disagree!
I really appreciate you watching and commenting but I never meant to indicate your allegation. I use power tools 90% of the time and consider myself a craftsman as you do. Thanks again for watching.
