  • This movie explores the theme of police brutality through a biting story of Kayode Bolodeoku who becomes a victim of harassment, assault and victimization in the hands of cruel and corrupt police officers.

I took my time to see the film. It is amazing, no doubt. The fact that Abiodun Olayiwola was able to feature such important actors as Lere Paimo and other influential dramatists is an effort which must be commended and celebrated. The directorial dexterity of the film cannot go unnoticed and the artistic effervescence of the work cannot be ignored. The Yoruba cultural celebration, which the film represents, manifests in diverse phases of the film - with the mesmerizing powers of Yoruba language and Yoruba ethics.
It is unfortunate that Kayode is treated with injustice, by the same police force which is empowered, by the constitution, to protect him from unfair treatment and injustice. It is rewarding, however, that the officers of the police force are brought to justice. The film's engagement of the theme of justice is, therefore, poignant. Kayode is an allegorical character. His surname is Bolodeoku. This suggests the dodged spirit of the Nigerian masses who are able to endure and survive difficult situations of economic and political belligerence. Of course, such belligerence must be confronted and defeated. There is no doubt, therefore, that Nigerian people have, historically, persistently resisted the tyranny of their societies .
The theme of police brutality is an ubiquitous subject. The most famous incidence of such, in recent times, is the case of George Floyd, in the United States. The October 2020 incidence of EndSARS protest, in Nigeria, brought the pertinence of this film to our door steps, as Nigerian people. The film reveals and lampoons the corruption, lawlessness, and malignancy of the Nigerian police. How can a man's life be wasted because of three and half million naira? This is the sad attempt of which Kayode finds himself a victim. He endures his travails and overcomes his tribulations. I am glad that justice catches up with the corrupt police officers. We need a system of transparency and accountability in the Nigerian police force and integrity in the Nigerian judicial set-up. Our government needs to be up to its task and responsibilities to the helpless and voiceless citizens whom Kayode Bolodeoku represents.

How would you describe the way Kayode was treated by the police?
