Reminds me of the old saying that my grandfather who grew the best tomatoes said - you're growing tomatoes, not leaves. He always took off the bottom leaves up to about 300 mm ( 12 inches) from the soll level. I forgot to mulch around mine this time and got Anthracnose and lost about 90 % of my crop from top watering and then hot humid days. Lesson learnt.

I agree with your grandfather & for a number of years have pruned middle of the tomato plant down to the bottom of the plant of extra leaves & my tomato plants would produce numerous tomatoes, tiny to huge tomatoes! I always heavy mulched & watered with a garden hose @ the base... didn't have many bug problems (slugs sometimes)..🙂

We just had the hottest November in my memory in WA. At least a week of 39-40c. Tomatoes made it through.

I think they are essential plants to grow. I’m lucky enough to grow them all year round. I haven’t grown many varieties. I like a bigger meatier fruit, that is firm.
The original Black Russian are my favourite.
I grew mortgage lifters this year and have to be my least favourite variety. Although tasty and large, they were soft fleshed creating a soggy bread texture

I've grown Mortgage Lifters on the Atherton Tablelands FNQ and found them quite sensational in terms of size, cropping, flavour, firmness and relatively good shelf life. One of the best all rounders in my opinion.

@@ErgonBill I’m in Mackay and first time growing. This year I had a ton of trouble with green caterpillars and grasshoppers

Thanks John. Do you ever have issues with green vegie bug? (Stink bug?)

Don't have a big problem with them, occasionally find them on the bramble berries. But not in numbers that need attention.
