- My Alocasia Frydek has spider mites, It was so hard to notice at first but after seeing the "webs" i knew for sure and these are the steps I am taking to get rid of them slowly so they are gone completely

One thing I would suggest. Is if you actually see the bugs, manually remove them with a soft cloth or alcohol on a qtip. Wipe down your whole plant first before spraying with neem oil. Remove any bugs that you see with your eyes. The best treatment is manual removal. I know your rinsed but you mentioned you were seeing more bugs. I would have immediately removed/killed them with a gloved hand or a damp cloth or like I said a qtip with alcohol.
And then a rule of thumb for all your plants is to keep the leaves clean by wiping with a damp soapy cloth regularly. (Use the soap you used in your neem oil mix.)
Could I use rubbing alcohol soap water mix with essential oils to clean my plants?
Can the insecticide soap be used weekly?
This tip is key. You’ve got to disrupt the spider mites webbing. It’s hydrophobic and can keep any bugs or eggs that are in that webbing safe from the neem oil. If I have a bad infestation I hand wash each and every leaf, front and back, down the stems with a dish detergent soaked makeup brush then neem oil the sht out of it. I do that three times within a month...it takes multiple times to remove them all. It works like a charm. It’s a lot of work but will kill them all and will save your plants from bad infestations.
I feel lucky I saw a spider web in my snake plant with a geometric web. I sprayed the plant with neem oil/soap and with alcohol solution. Took plant outside saw another web but out crawled a real spider thank goodness. I follow Erika's advice and spray plants every other week with neem and soap. I take my plants outside during the summer during the summer and don't want any bugs.
Spider mites seem to love Alocasia. I’ve lost my Frydek recently to spider mites. I wasn’t able to figure out in time what was killing it suddenly.

I found slugs on my newly purchased plants (purchased yesterday) today. I almost lost it b/c I don't like any type of monsters. Not even the beneficial ones (except lady bugs). I use DE (diatomaceous earth) which is messy but it works. I put it on all of my plants that I purchased yesterday (leaves, stems, soil) so that I don't have to worry about them. The only thing is DE kills all bugs/insects beneficial or not. My thing is I will let a spider live in my home as long as I don't see it. Once I see you, you must go. New subscriber today!

can i cut all the foliage off and repot the bulb? it's been inside over winter and the stuff coming up has the mites and spots all over it :(

I had the same issue with my regal shield and low rider. I treated the foliage so vigourously i over watered the soil and was afraid to shock it further. Unfortunately, this led to bacteria infection which i spread. Lost the regal and a monstera. Happy to report that i learned a very important lesson about soil health. Low rider is doing great in leca and the monstera deliciosa has a better draining soil with diatomaceous earth on top. I truly hope your beautiful plant recovers.
You make a very good point that is NOT often warned about when treating plants: treat at the regular scheduled watering (when dry) and with each treatment, don't get the soil wet with the treatment or you will be "over watering" the plant and end up killing them anyway. (Not getting the soil wet is VERY hard to do.)

Courtney S remember diatomaceous earth only works on bugs with an exoskeleton or segmented body. So it wouldn’t work for spider mites. But would work for mealy bugs or aphids. 😊
I saw it on my Alocasia this morning. I wiped the leaves with a cleansing wipe and sprayed it with a repellent afterwards. Hopefully it will solve this issue, it's my first time owning this type of plant and seeing spider mites. It freaked me out! 😱
All the reading/videos I took in before getting an Alocasia and NOTHING was said of spider mites. I find articles AFTER getting one that they are SPIDER MITE MAGNETS! Not a happy camper. The whole reason I never tried indoor ivy was because of that same reputation. Yikes.

my newest leaf on my elephant ear got mites, its really sad, other 2 leafs are happy but are older, will the plant come back if i cut the newest leaf? and should i cut it that low? love your vids btw.

I always use green pamolive dish soap to fight off all bugs once I receive a plant through mail or buy a plant I always cleaned the leaves and stems with the pamolive dish soap and give it a shower I pour soap in hand a shampoo leaves my plants love it and they seem to bounce back I’ve also used this method for mealy bugs but I change the soil and spray the roots and repot I don’t use neem oil it seems like all bugs are immune to it now
For the Palmolive soap is there a specific one you buy/prefer?

I've had the same problem with my Alocasia Micholitziana getting spider mites twice! I finally made the decision to completely uproot and transfer to Leca. I did this because I was afraid that the soil was also infested with eggs/mites. I did the exact treatment with spraying with insecticidal soap and giving it a hard spray before the transfer. it worked really well! Good luck with yours!

Are spider mites more active at night? I spray mine at night to avoid neem sunburn. Is that ok?
I used neem on my Alocasia polly and within 24 hours all the leaves turned yellow and its dying. How did yours respond?

I thought you said 'fried egg', and I kept thinking ''It doesn't look like one. How did it get that name?" The close-up of the spider mites was really informative for me. When you have a lot of plants, it's hard to spot these things as quickly as you'd like.
This made me laugh, because that's exactly what I thought when I heard of this plant too! But I did think it looked like a fried egg in my opinion 🤪I'm not actually sure how it got that name, I would be interested to find out also!

My cat palm got infected with spider mites. My difenbachia infected with fungus gnats. For the spider mites I treated it with a little alcohol a lot of water and a little dish soap, washed the leaves rinsed. I bulbed water and food, kept dirt dry and added pebbles. The plant has dried the some of the leaves have turned brownish green. It’s so ugly, thin and dry, what do I do? How do I save her?
The difenbachia has the gnats. I treated the dirt with 1cup of water 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide mix. I put it in the sink poured the mixture all over the dirt and let it drain removed the top two inches of dirt and let it dry so I can add the pebbles to the dry dirt. All on Sunday, today three of the bottom leaves have turned a light green. The plant has a funny odor. The dirt is drying I’m waiting to add the pebbles once it dries. What did I do wrong? Can it be saved?

How did it fair ? I just had to go through this and watched a few vids that really helped , using a old stiffer makeup brush or soft paint brush to break up the webs 🕸 on every leaf really helped with the alcohol dish soap mixture. Tfs it’s stressful cus I’m new to learning about pests . Spraying isn’t enough burn their House Down lol 😂

I would wait to repot the plant because it's already stressed out enough without reporting it I would just put take off the first enter so of the soil that's in and put new soil on top of the old potting soil. It's been stressed out enough even putting that neem oil on is stress because it's still can't breathe and do photosynthesis the same way it could without the neem oil on it but it's up to you what you do I'm just saying I wouldn't completely repot it it's already stressed out so much from the bugs from the spray from having most of its leaves cut off and then you're going to stress out the roots so I don't know
I just noticed webbing on my Stromathe triostar today and what a coincidence you posted this video today! But the webbing looks different than yours it's ALL over the plant overnight, and I see no bugs at all. Maybe they are too small? I will try neem oil. Thanks for your video!
spider mites are SUPER tiny!! they cause the leaves to yellow too 😩since yours happened overnight, it could be just a regular spider. Lots of my plants have regular spiders on them & the webbing they produce is a lot thicker than the webbing from spider mites. It's kind of hard to remove. Maybe try wetting your plant to see if a spider will come out? It's very scary when a big spider comes out of your plant when watering 😟Neem oil treatment will be good for your plant anyway so it's good to try ☺️ let me know if you found out if they were spider mites!
@@ErikaLodes It did turn out to b a spider! I removed the web and he came out. He seemed kind of annoyed lol, but I haven't seen any more insects or webbing since.
Oh no! You always have you humidifier going too. I didn't think spider mites had a chance if you had humidifier going. I went to Walmart last week and bought two and two racks online for my plants for my winter prep. Even when you are the best plant Mom things can always happen but now in the spring it will get tons of new growth and bounce back once it gets out of the hospital. :)
I literally just found spider mites on my alocasia stingray 2 days ago! My alocasia pink dragon has no spidermites though but i gave it a good watering and now 4 leaves (outside, oldest) are drooping and yellowing! I don't think this is a bug infestation problem since I see nothing, but I'm hopeful it's just a new leaf coming in? Will an alocasia droop that many leaves just for one new leaf? Can this happen even after just one day of overwatering? The roots look fine!
These spider mites attacking all of our beautiful plants 🤦🏼♀️In my experience, the leaves have only yellowed one at a time to allow for a single new leaf to grow out. Overwatering could be a cause. Also, it could be going dormant. My alocasia polly has lost about 4 leaves since I left it outside probably due to going dormant. They really can't stand cold weather, maybe that's why yours is dropping leaves as well. I just brought it inside & put it under a growlight & near a humidifier. You're poor pink dragon though, that's such a gorgeous plant 😭I really hope it pulls through for you! 💚 Goodluck!
Just an FYI: you will not see spider mites until their numbers are very high. That is the point at which you will start seeing damage on the plant as well.

I just bought neem oil the other day but haven't used it yet. Do you think Murphy's Oil Soap would be ok to use? I already have a bottle of that and I'd rather not buy anything else if it will do the job.

Murphy's Oil Soap would be fine even Dawn dishwashing detergent would work. Baby shampoo anything like that. The purpose of dish soap is to wash the plant of the bugs it changes the surface tension and if you've ever seen a bug swimming around in the water maybe in a bird bath or something but I collect Japanese beetles into a bucket of water in the evening. Instead of spraying that could kill the good insects. You just take a little bucket of water hold it under the plant where the Japanese beetles are tap the plant and the Beatles fall into the bucket because at night they don't fly they turn upside down on the ground because if they're hard to see because of their underbelly color. But they can swim for days in that bucket and that used to happen I'm like why are they still alive. Then I discovered that if you put a few drops of dishwashing detergent in the bucket they can't swim anymore because you broke the surface tension on the water. So the soap helps wash along with the neem oil and the spray water bottle it helps wash the bugs off the plant if you don't want the bugs in the soil then you put a cloth or plastic wrap or something or turn the plant sideways so they don't fall down into the soil and maybe survive. That's why I suggest take the top inch of soil off and put clean soil on top
@@kathleenmurphy2379 While I appreciate the time you took to answer my question, the only reason I asked about Murphy's (funny that's your last name) is because I heard that Dawn will burn the plants despite how gentle it claims to be on oily ducks.
All you need to do is spray with Castrol liquid soap mixed with water and peppermint oil ,the soap destroys them ,not the eggs though, I spray from top to bottom, and repeat in 3 day up to five times and repeat in a few weeks, works really well without hurting your plant, at the right strength, I use two table spoons in gallon, you may need to test on a couple of leaves first, and work out amont
I discarded 100% of my plants. I discovered it late. So heart-breaking. Soap, neem, and thieves seem not to be working. 😭

I think you did the right thing!! also when and if they do hatch which bring more I would use a pesticide next time along with getting and applying Di Earth ...( after the pesticide dries) then waiting again and if you see more go back to the Neem oil to reduce them building up tolerance (pesky fuc#$×)) thanks for the videos!!!:)

Not good to have insects at all, can say I have never faced spider might, I think its too humid over here, Butt get scale and sooty mold and ants omg i am not a fan of ants as the cause the scale to get worse. I hope all goes well with your plants as I see mine as my children, and the removal of some of the leaves may stimulate growth, I hope it does. Great video once again and lots of good info, can't wait for some updates on the hydro plants, hope they are going well also.

I found spider mites for the first time just yesterday, on one of my succulents. I didn't care much for it at all so I just tossed it and didn't feel too bad. But your beautiful alocasia... 😭 Hope that you're able to take care of it and that your plant bounces back.
Have them on a vine that I started from a cutting. Yea was wondering about those tiny little webs and the nice green leaves turning kinda funky. I was reading soapy water works. Hmm. I had the vine sitting on a succulent but it doesn't seem to be affected.

Oh no ): I hope you're able to get rid of them! If it makes you feel better, my Frydek no longer has spider mites from this method. It only took around 4 days to get rid of them! Lots of humidity really helps.
BUT WHAT ARE THE PREVENTION TIPS!
Spider mites like dry, hot environments. So winter time is perfect for spider mites to attack. The heater is running & the air is dry, which they love. I recommend to maintain a humid environment & keep your plants watered. Don't let them overdry & you should be fine 🤗
