How Would You Fix This Rotted Out Nissan?

  • In this video I bring you along as I look at a customers 2015 Nissan Altima that came in on a tow truck. A quick inspection reveals a rotted and broken rear lower control arm and the one on the other side is only moments away from snapping off too. We always have to look at the big picture here in the rust belt so sometimes replacing a control arm is not that easy. In this case I am ordering a whole new rear cradle with both knee assemblies from a place out of Alabama. In the end I think it is the better deal. I'd like to hear what you think or know how you would handle this.

    As usual there is a lot of info in the comments👍🏼. It appears there is the possibility of a recall on this vehicle. Interesting part is the service data that we use for OEM parts look up as well as service info does not list the recall. I actually had to Google it. Of course at this point I already repaired the vehicle but I will pass the info onto the customer and they can reach out to Nissan for possible reimbursement. This morning I did contact our local Nissan dealer and they stated to me they only cover the control arms, no rotted anything else, no stuck fasteners, bushings etc. Their estimate with the "free repair" was still more than my total bill 😅 I think the customer is still in the green. Stay tuned....

    • @zippythechicken
      @zippythechicken Před rokem

      @@Channel-gz9hm The whole premise behind Salvage Title Vehicles is that they have seen so much damage that the cost to repair them back to a safe and dependable vehicle is beyond their value.. like a vehicle that is worth $10k as normal non-salvage ends up needing $12k worth of work. (its actually less.. about half.. but you get the idea.. more work than its value in the end) The only way you can do that is to eliminate the cost of labor or not perform the work to the level the vehicle is safe and dependable. Its not the case that an insurance estimator is going to write the estimate incorrectly to over state the damage because they would be fired. SO HOW DOES THAT WORK IN REALITY? you have people that aren't professionally trained like professional youtubers... who buy these extensively damaged vehicles .. they negate the labor.. they slap something together that barely passes inspection OR they run the car through a state that has very poor inspection standards and people are driving vehicles that are unsafe.. IF A CAR DEALER gets hold of one of these copart auction salvage vehicles and they do all the repairs correctly they can't just not account for labor costs or use crap parts or hammer out or patch weld ultra high strength steel that needs to be taken back to the spot welds and replaced.. they can't hammer out metal that requires a frame rack to pull.. they have to do the work to the point where the vehicle is now as safe as it would have been before the damage or better and when it passes a special inspection by the state police then the car is not registered as a Salvage Title its registered as a Clear Title.
      So no you are wrong and this hasn't just been happening for the past 3 years its been happening forever..
      Its a very well known and repulsive standard that people get hold of these vehicles and do substandard work and then push them through inspection in a number of these states that wipe the salvage information from the title. BUT INSURANCE COMPANIES SHARE THE VIN NUMBERS OF THE VEHICLES THEY TOTAL OUT.. so these vehicles might be able to be registered and they might even get insurance policies written for them.. BUT everyone involved knows that the vehicle is crap. So you can go out and buy your Salvage Vehicles that have been sitting under salt water for 6 weeks with the frames looking shiny on the outside but totally rusted on the inside.. where Air Bags have been bought off of Ebay and Put back together with electrical tape and resistors that fake the presence of the airbag but really its just someone's brother inlaws old socks stuffed in a bag with a wire hanging out of it.. and you can drive that thing down the street and the wiring can catch fire and you go over a pebble in the road and the axle detaches.. and you can feel happy happy because it buffed out really great...... but when a family dies.. when grandma dies on the way to church.. when that youtuber kid that barely graduated high school with no trade school with no work experience ends up selling that vehicle to someone who sells it to someone else and they end up dying because they did substandard repairs and misstated it all and then brought it to a shop that just pealed off a sticker and charged the guy an extra under the table $100 for an unsafe vehicle.. I mean come on .............. this specific vehicle in its current condition is not able to pass inspection.. and that didn't happen in 3 weeks.
      So no I am not going to be buying a Diablo for $12,000 at a copart auction and trying to get it inspected after using a pressure washer and a gallon of bondo an buffing it out...
      You want to do that .. good luck to you.. I have seen a lot of people do it.. I have even seen "professional" shops do it .. I have seen car manufacturer Dealerships do it
      But I am not going to do it...
      I am not going to drive a car like that or sell it to someone like that..
      I am not going to tell someone that a totaled vehicle that I hammered out and slapped a gallon of bondo on its frame is safe and then watch them get in an accident... ... Tell them that the reason it was totaled was hail damaged but really it was crushed beyond proper repair or so rusted that it would take every metal part on it being replaced .. or that the car was underwater and I ran a gallon of miracle oil through the engine and transmission and somehow its not smoking anymore and told you it was rebuilt or its a crate motor.. yeah...
      You go do that.. Cars that are salvage are salvage for reason.. you can't get around that and no good shop can if the work is done correctly.. you just can't.. because insurance companies aren't going to pay off a vehicle for no reason.
      Is it possible .. SURE 1 out of 100 maybe.. but if not then you're cutting corners and risking lives.
      AND YOU DON'T LIVE LIFE LIKE THAT..
      YOU DON'T SAY HEY HERES AN INSPECTION STICKER FOR $100 AND LET SOMEONE RIDE DOWN THE ROAD AND DIE OR KILL SOMEONE..
      You want to live life like that go ahead .. then you tell God all about it when you get to heaven.. and he won't believe your lies either.. but there will be a bigger price to pay if you live your life that way INTENTIONALLY and its not a mistake or an honest situation..
      You don't live your life that way .. looking for every backdoor.. every slimy deal.. every lie.. because if you do things the right way.. the best you can.. you can make a profit.. you can do just fine.. and you aren't risking your own life or other people's lives for a buck.
      Its bad enough the mistakes we make when we try our hardest... but to do things intentionally .. thats no way to live life.
      but you go ahead.

    Great way of thinking I like it. Get a good complete thing, cradle/subframe, control arms, anti-roll stabilizers the whole shebang. As a Dutch mechanic and vehicle inspector of 20+ years I'm even amazed how rusted out this one is. If it was in the Netherlands it would have been long caught on inspection. This is a hazard on the road, accident waiting to happen. I love to watch your videos to learn some of the technical English terms for some parts that I didn't know because we get more and more non Dutch speaking clients every day. Question, do you or does anyone there use the rust-preventive tectyl coatings? It can make parts last years longer before the rust devil rears its ugly head. We try to sell it on customers with Nissan X-Trails and Hyundai Tucsons especially, because we've seen our share of rusted through subframes and control arms. Thanks for the vid. • @leonb2637
    @leonb2637 Před rokem +4

    Some have mentioned an extended warranty by Nissan on the lower control arms, but it may not cover other possibly damaged/rusted parts, springs, brake backing plates, etc. needed so better off getting a used rear assembly to take care of the customer right. If the rest of the car is solid, it doesn't have high mileage, and for the price of a couple of loan payments, it is worth doing it. I am quite sure Eric is looking out for the customer's best interest.

    • @knurlgnar24
      @knurlgnar24 Před rokem

      Better to have Nissan replace the control arms then trade it in. They'll give you about book for a trade-in regardless of zero rust or impending total rot-out. The next buyer will pay 'book' regardless so they don't care.

  • @garym4536
    @garym4536 Před rokem +1

    yup, common for the control arms and sub frames to rust out. I had this same thing happen to an 04 murano. The right lower sub frame came apart on me while taking a low speed corner. I replaced the entire subframe with new from Nissan. I seem to remember it cost about a grand but the replacement wasn't too bad, basically 4 large bolts after removing the exhaust and braking system.

    Man, I'm *SO* glad I live in the South. I honestly can't imagine a car that's only 8 years old being that badly gone. Down here, an 8-year-old car is just a regular used car -- you worry far more about the shoddy maintenance the engine and transmission received than you do about the control-arms and sub-frame rusting so badly that they break into pieces.
