@@sramoore0075187 911 was completely preventable. bin Laden had been clear for a decade about usa support of Israel/ funding genocide of Palestinians and other issues related to usa imperialism and what he would do if we did not take the valid concerns of mid east peoples to heart. Moreover it was usa that created bin Laden when we used him temporarily to be the vanguard against ussr communism in Afghanistan only to flip him the bird when ussr pulled out. This is the same pattern with Sadam and dozens of other strong men we've put on cia payroll.
Like any empire b4, usa only achieved this 150 years of status by stepping on the necks of people domestically and overseas ... fueled by warmongering and economies that support war. Selling to both Nazis and brits/french during ww2 was an esp glaring eg ... bc usa feared communists more than fascists. Recall Hitler took usa's slavery institutions as inspiration for his Final Solution. There's nothing democratic about it. Compare that trajectory to indigenous tribal groups that have lived in harmony with not destruction of their region's resources for more then 10,000 years.
God has nothing to do with it either. The 99% have got to rise up against oligarchs ... not gods ... that divide to conquer us. Simple goal. Might save a planet.
We need to take Jefferson's quote All are Created Equal ... and stretch it to not only include the millions usa has killed outright or through proxies like we are doing now via Saudi Arabia and Yemen ... but to the animals and plants that also deserve a home on earth. The greed with which man's so called civilization is as uncivil as it gets w regard any living thing that does not serve to feed human all consuming needs.
YES obama and trump admins have yet to act responsibly w regard to the suffering 911 brought to those families. What else is new in that congress loves to fund the killing / but abandons those that served. Sound familiar?

Has a historian, my degree was in US History, my senior paper on the Vietnam War, mostly on the fact that the North was NEVER going to quit, the music of that era was one of the reasons the US couldn't continue without breaking itself apart! Our next door neighbor, an enlisted member of the United States Marine Corps, had been killed in that War, brought it just too close to home! And, if the War continued another year, I was looking at a draft number of 18, pretty much a given that I would be called by my "neighbors and friends" to protect the US, in South Vietnam! (I ended up being a USAF NCO medic, never leaving CONUS.) Every once in a while I find myself listening to the song "Abraham, Martin, and John", with Bobby added in the song following his assassination in June 1968! I believe that Dion, by adding Abraham, tied the Civil War with the Vietnam War musically, and nearly with a repeat of another civil war over the latter war! There were some pro war songs, almost all early in the Vietnam War, then turning more against the War as the 1960's end, and the War just kept going on! I'm not sure how these two, a noted Historian and a famous Country singer, got together for this, but, I can see where music from various eras of our Nation's history act as a "trip wire" to some part of the brain that takes you back to that time! Maybe, it will help us to try to find that one out of ten that brings Americans to a better place in our society! Maybe!

I walked through a county courthouse square
On a park bench an old man was sitting there
I said, your old courthouse is kinda run down
He said, naw, it'll do for our little town
I said, your old flagpole has leaned a little bit
And that's a ragged old flag you got hanging on it
He said, have a seat, and I sat down
Is this the first time you've been to our little town?
I said, I think it is
He said, I don't like to brag
But we're kinda proud of that ragged old flag
You see, we got a little hole in that flag there when
Washington took it across the Delaware
And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key
Sat watching it writing say can you see
And it got a bad rip in New Orleans
With Packingham and Jackson tuggin' at its seams
And it almost fell at the Alamo
Beside the texas flag, but she waved on though
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill
There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg
And the south wind blew hard on that ragged old flag
On Flanders field in World War one
She got a big hole from a Bertha gun
She turned blood red in World War Two
She hung limp and low a time or two
She was in Korea and Vietnam
She went where she was sent by Uncle Sam
She waved from our ships upon the Briny foam
And now they've about quit waving her back here at home
In her own good land here she's been abused
She's been burned, dishonored, denied, and refused
And the government for which she stands
    Is scandalized throughout the land
And she's getting threadbare and wearing thin
But she's in good shape for the shape she's in
'Cause she's been through the fire before
And I believe she can take a whole lot more
So we raise her up every morning
We take her down every night
We don't let her touch the ground and we fold her up right
On second thought, I do like to brag
'Cause I'm mighty proud of that ragged old flag

      I just Googled it.
      Here's what I found:
"I've Been Everywhere" is actually not a Tim McGraw song, but a Hank Snow song popularized by the late country legend Johnny Cash.
The actual Tim McGraw song you're interested in is simply titled: "Everywhere" and you can listen to it/stream it for free here on CZcams, or, you could also buy his album, not surprisingly, titled: *Everywhere*
      Hope that helped.☺
      (When in doubt?
      Google works amazingly well.)

With all due respect to Mr. Meacham, no conservatives don't have a point, not even one out of ten times. Just like how the Confederates did not have a point. Also, "My Country 'Tis of Thee" makes a better anthem than "Star Spangled Banner".

As a liberal northern country-girl who grew up on a farm, there is still something intensely hot about a cowboy. Tim McGraw seems like a genuinely nice man and good husband.

I think Tim is liberal in many ways as well. He loves hunting, but still supports gun control (just not gun removal of course). He has caught a lot of flack for that from his fans, but he stands for what he believes in.

“If you’re on the left you love data and reason”. I’m not too sure I would agree with that. If you’re on the extremes, either left or right one tends to operate from a visceral sense of righteousness and illogicity. I would say that moderates, be the right or left of centre, are the ones that love data, intellect and reason.

Does the book mention racist lyrics in the anthem?
No refuge could save the hireling & slave/
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:/
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave/
O’er the land of the free & the home of the brave.

I love Jon Meacham, but I will NEVER get to the place in my heart where I look at a MAGA supporter (after ALL the CRAP we've endured the last three years) and think, "Hunh! You may have a point there." Sorry, ain't sorry. NEVER gonna happen.
And I'm kinda sick of hearing people say we've got to 'unite', we need to come together, all that hoo ha. I have ZERO desire to 'come together' with people who go along with the kind of evil, corrupt, injustice & racism & xenophobia & misogyny & homophobia, ETC!!!! (too much to list) & the COUNTLESS crimes against humanity, civility, & the constitution that Trump & his ilk have perpetrated. Besides which, GOOD people do not go along with, remain silent in the face of, nor 'unite' with folks who've lost their way. If they did, Hitler would've never been defeated, & we'd still have slaves & slave owners in America.
Once again, LOVE Jon Meacham & don't have anything in particular against McGraw, but the entire premise of this book/interview was a big fat rotten egg for me.

@@omi_god In the U.S. we fight our "civil" wars in the voting booths. We learned (or should have learned) that spilling the blood of our fellow citizens was not a good thing and not something we should ever consider again. We make our arguments through our best weapon, the vote.

I feel bad for you then. You really don't know and love any Trump supporters? You know how you change hearts and minds? Through respect. I have many relatives who voted for Trump. I have an aunt I am very close to who voted for him and who is against me on many topics. I have opened up her mind so many times and have slowly changed the way she has viewed certain things because I actually talk to her, speak from the heart, listen to her, respect what she has to say, and then we find a common ground. I got her to vote for Obama four years ago, and against a gay marriage ban (which she used to be in approval of) from doing those things. Nobody is gonna listen to you if you disregard them.

This is so wrong. Especially Meacham with all his sweet talk, his MLK references and such.
This is not a conversation. It's the transparent attempt of someone with no intention of having his worldview challenged to win over some gullible people from the other side. To refer to Jefferson and then to follow with: "We don't build monuments for people who build walls and shut doors." speaks volumes with regard to his understanding of history.

@@Brianbeesandbikes Wrong to act as if you were speaking up for inclusiveness all the while whitewashing history in favor of presidents on which you hang your southern pride.
Wrong to claim Jefferson wanted equality for all when what he really meant equality just for male, white, Christian folk.
You wanna defend Jefferson. Fine by me. But do it openly. Let the people hear your honest opinion, but do not wrap it into some easily applaudable rejection of Trump just so people assume, you agree with each other.
