    Yes, "the queen of blandsville!" That is how I have always felt about Cosette. Eponine has my two favorite songs in the entire show, both heart-breakers. I think she is truly the most miserable of les miserables, but still able to love deeply and truly, and always giving of herself.

Thanks so much for putting out great content, you've converted at least one person to the joy and beauty of musical theater!

    Samantha Barks was the most overt pro in that depressingly mismanaged film. Holy smokes, her death scene. It speaks to her talent and strength that even Hooper's nonsensical direction couldn't result in a bad performance from her.

      I firmly agree! I had the pleasure of seeing her in the West End playing Eponine back in like 2011 I think! My best friend's Mum took us when we were going to to Les Mis in our last year of school. (I was Marius, he was Javert). She was STUNNING in the west end production. I was very lucky that day, Simon Bowman as Jean Val Jean, Norm Lewis as Javert and Samantha Barks Eponine. Killian Donnelly was Enjolras. Man that show was insane. Saw it a second time and it was no where near as good without them.

  • @rumpelstiltskinbuttaller7991

    Honestly, Cosette has always lacked a dimension that could've pushed her to the same level as Eponine. Realistically speaking, how can a person face that much childhood trauma and still remain that innocent?

    • @CEWThree
      @CEWThree Před 3 lety +30

      What she needs is a better song than "In My Life." "Castle on a Cloud" does such a good job at encapsulating her childhood state, but her adulthood is defined by falling in love with Marius right away and having a bunch of questions that Valjean will never answer. Maybe give her a solo just before "One Day More," where she basically says that now that she's finally found in Marius someone who won't hide anything from her, someone who is safe and who might give her everything she has ever wanted, and now her father is tearing the two of them away from each other. Basically expand the line "Tomorrow you'll be worlds away, and yet with you my world has started" into a song.

    • @rumpelstiltskinbuttaller7991
      @rumpelstiltskinbuttaller7991 Před 3 lety +9

      @@CEWThree actually that does expound more on her as a character. I think one of the reasons why she always had less emotional depth than Eponine was because we had less time to understand her emotions as well as how she thinks. With Eponine and On My Own we get what she wants but with Cosette and In My Life she's only started bringing her thoughts out but we didn't get to know what happens next for her emotionally

    • @kiksocks12
      @kiksocks12 Před 3 lety +4

      I think that is the point of Cosette actually, that she is supposed to be that angelic innocence that shines through all the sadness and torture. That’s why she needs to have an absolutely angelic voice. Which Seyfried does not. It was honestly awful and cringey hear her play Cosette. She has beautiful angelic face and hair but they really missed the mark with the singing voice on this one.

    • @susanboyd6592

    • @danaandrews4261
      @danaandrews4261 Před 3 lety +3

      The play is about the Miserable. Cosette was not that- for most of her life she was sheltered/protected from pain. Her character was comfort and some Safety. You have to embrace every character to appreciate the others

  • @wanderer7956
    @wanderer7956 Před 3 lety +34

    I tend to think that when people say Cosette is "the queen of blandsville," it's because they don't understand the point of her character. She's almost a placeholder in the story, representing Valjean's act of atonement to Fantine, and the barrier to Eponine being with Marius (even though Marius wasn't interested in her before Cosette came into the picture, but anyway...). If you look at the story, her character journey is pretty impressive. She was raised apart from her mother with the Thénardier family, whose entire mission in life was to take what they can get. Cosette is abused and neglected until she's rescued by Valjean. This is a difficult beginning that could have jaded her, but instead, she follows her adoptive father's example and strives to be good and kind. I've always thought they didn't give more focus on her character in the musical because that made it easier to focus on Eponine's pain and longing- you wouldn't feel for Eponine so much if you saw Cosette a good person, or possibly more deserving of Marius. BTW, is that true that Taylor Swift was competing for the role?!? That would have ruined the movie! I know there's a lot of die hard Swifties out there, but lets be honest- while she'll be remembered for how many downloads or concert tickets she sold, she won't go down in history as one of the great vocalists of her generation. You can't just have a decent voice for the leads in Les Mis. Ask Russell Crowe...

      Definitely agree on Samantha Barks and Aaron Tveit. Tho I personally would rate Hugj Jackman lower than Russell Crowe (I said what I said) I just feel like Hugh Jackman's voice is too low for the part of Valjean, his rage isnt quite where its need for those songs (just my opinion)

    • @6thwilbury2331
      @6thwilbury2331 Před 3 lety +4

      @@b_r_ooklyn Yeah, I can get behind that. If I was to grade on a curve, where I adjust for expectation, then definitely. I actually liked Jackman's performance on a couple numbers, but for the most part, he was a disappointment. As for Crowe, I just felt sorry for him. He was out of his league. Perfectly enjoyable rock voice, and he absolutely has the physical presence, but his singing chops just don't measure up for Les Mis.
      What I'll never understand: Philip Quast was still just young enough to pull off a convincing Javert back in 2012. Why not bring in the GOAT for that role, and introduce him to mainstream film audiences? (Then again, I wonder if he was offered and refused once he knew what the conditions would be.)
      And for that matter, was Katie Hall not available as Cosette? After all, she performed that role during the very 2010 concert film in which the movie was announced, and (obv.) at the same time that Barks was playing Eponine. Seems like another opportunity missed eight years ago.

    A world that's full of happiness that I have never known... You know, I've seen every rendition I can get my hands on, read it more than once and just now realized the composers got this wrong. She was a girl child of Mme Thenardier and as such was a favorite and completely doted on until sometime not disclosed exactly when but definitely after Cosette is taken. Given Gavroche is never disc!owed as her brother either, so there's that lol.

    Thanks Marc. I love this movie and really agree that Samantha Barks nailed the performance of this song. I like Eponines death scene on the West End production rather then in the movie, it would be interesting for you to do a comparision of them.

    Marc, after all that has happened these last few days in Washington DC, you and this video are a much needed haven as I have moved from close to tears to anger. Anyway, like you, I love Les Misérables. I was not and am still not a fan of the film version because so much of the music had to be transposed to accommodate the cast. I have the DVD version of the 25th anniversary cast so I was pleased that Samantha Barks' Eponine did not have to be transposed. She is beautiful to watch as she transforms Eponine into a dreamer, an old soul on a fantasy of optimism. who is willing to sacrifice for her love. For me, she was the only vocal and dramatic positive in this film. Thank you Marc for this much needed escape.

    Éponine is my ultimate dream role and I look up to Samantha soooo much. She's incredible! My favourite song from Les Mis. I just wish my vocal coach (she isn' a musical theatre coach because it's not very popular in my country) would listen to me and not yell at me to open my mouth at the beginning...I tried to explain it was a character choice and that it's supposed to be calm and quiet at first but she still didn't listen...

    First I played Cosette- I wanted eponine
    then I became Mme Thernardier- I wanted eponine
    Then I played Fantine- and Omg- I always want this role now. Over the eponine thing.
    Also- Banks does something a lot of women don’t do on this song- she allows for silence between the notes- so many people over sing this melodramatically

    I agree tha Samantha is one of the best actresses to play Eponine. She comes a close second to Lea Salonga imo. It's hard to believe that she was in a UK talent show (came in 3rd) in 2008, and scored the film role of a lifetime playing Eponine in 2012.
