And it's also totally in character for Frank to want to avoid as potentially vulnerable a statement as telling the rest of the former bandmates that he loves them. I think it's a gray area with a film like this. Fassbender is definitely the conceptual focus, but we explore his character through the peripheral viewpoint of Gleeson's character. So the protagonist is technically Gleeson, but the story is about Frank, but both characters go through their own arcs of equal importance. I think both actors probably could have submitted for Best Actor, as neither were really Featured or Supporting. Either way yeah Fassbender deserved accolades for his performance, especially considering how strong it was for not being able to see his face for the majority of the film.

Most people with profound autism are completely non-verbal. My 10 year old daughter is a non-verbal child with autism. Frank functions on a MUCH higher level, in nearly every respect, than she & her peers. Autistic people also aren't placed in mental hospitals these days as Frank was. It was a brilliant movie & portrayal, just not of autism.

The thing about this song and scene is that it's they're both so meaningful and you grab out to interpret the lyrics but this is only because it's the last scene and so much has happened. But what if, the only thing important to interpret is "I love you all" which is simple to understand. And possibly because people constantly aim to interpret his lyrics. So he used that simply to make it stick out.

I think that the fact that he left on his own is actually a great ending - he accepted both his and their fate never to be famous but to be happy and with a peaceful minds.
Also it is curious how much his role corresponds with the role audience has in production of any movie - we all want to live and be great, we put money to them to be part of it and get closer to the experience and then we just walk away and nobody knows what we will do next with what we've been through.
Besides the ending may also correspond with Jon Ronson's experience of letting go of Frank Sidebottom, who died before Jon managed to help him.

Such an amazing scene. I have watched it over and over again. The scene works on many levels. It’s a perfect ending. Anybody who has ever been in a band will love this scene. I really respect Jon for reuniting the group with it’s singer and realizing he is no longer a part of it and that the core of the group was those four members creating music together. And I can’t get that dang song out of my head!!

I'm in my late 40s and it's impossible to articulate how close this is to how I see/feel music. One of the most brilliant movies on bands, the musical process, and the realistic paradox of mental illness and genius. I almost never make an online statement but this movie was so incredible I can't shut up about. GET OUT OF THE PATH OF THE KING!

This movie moved me on so many levels, starting in garages, and spare bedrooms to being able to rent studios for various bands the point is when you find a few
fellow musicians and you are all on the same page it becomes spiritual and transcends the boundaries of ordinary even if it's only thru your eyes, and ears and those
friends that are on that journey with you, nothing compares! I love this movie and the ending always makes me cry which I love it makes me feel alive!!!!

I love this movie and it's now one of my favourite movies ever.
There are so many emotions you get while watching this movie. You laugh, you cry and you're simply confused.
It's fascinating to see how Jon's egoistical desire for the band to be famous, and therefore himself, is tearing the group members apart.
For me, the movie is about doing whatever it is you're doing for yourself. Find joy in it, put in passion and don't care what other people think or better said only those people that are important to you.

Even though this movie is such a weird take on Frank side bottom, I think it nails it right on the head of Frank’s obscure humour and poetic take on humour. Frank side bottom was so original. Fassbender captured his unique character and made it his own. Life is annoying and funny at the same time.

what an amazing movie and song. Both brilliant on so many levels. The movie is like a cycle. Ending as it begun except 2 differences. Frank realizes that the head was hindering him and he realized he was still great without it and he loved the band not the "wall" of his head. Second difference is that Jon, who as Deri C greatly pointed out, realizes he doesn't belong, is no longer writing songs in his head. Wonderful movie...think I'm going to go watch it again.
