- The forty-first episode of Boss Analysis.
I hinted at this video's featured boss back in Creepy Moments # 10, a full three years ago, and here it finally is.
We all have those bosses that gave us utter hell from our early gaming years and stick in your mind as a fiendish foe forever more. But occasionally, we may return to their games years later and find out they weren't such a threat after all.
However, there's an early boss from Secret of Mana that gave me so much trouble back in the day, (some of it being purely my own fault, I admit) and even today, I still think I was completely justified to hate his guts... - Hry
"He absolutely REFUSED to get off the platform"
Me: i dunno man, that sounds like normal cat behaviour to me

@Ahmad and skeleton Tigers are cats you undercooked slice of bread.

@@fedorshcheglov5534 Yes they can.

Not seeing a shadow where Spikey is about to drop feels like they’re breaking a video game equivalent of the laws of nature.
It baffles me that you have been doing the same thing for 10+ years, and still going strong, no charisma or funny voices needed.
Thats dedication and true passion
This was Marvelously Said! It’s one of the things that make him stand out from other CZcamsrs.
Don't fix what ain't broke.
Git's sharp and snappy writing come off as infinitely more "charismatic" than a bunch of screaming manchildren trying to con kids into gambling pyramid schemes.
4:45
Apparently his hitbox is his entire sprite, including the shadow.
And bounding box too.
"Pull a K. Rool" is a great way to call fake deaths
Yeah
Gotta admit, this stupid tiger was the reason why i never bothered again with this game.
I should give it a chance again but honestly it killed my whole interest back then.
It really does get better after that- none of the bosses are quite that broken and the environments are beautiful.
That’s exactly my experience with this game in a nutshell.
@@WhiteFangofWar i won't deny that since i've seen videos about the game be on this channel and another but it's all locked behind this mess
Play trials/sd3, its better in every wat
The entire game is just nothing but that awful, sluggish stunlock gameplay, just to a lesser extent than that tiger and that one other boss fight in the forest. It's borderline unplayable, and I say this as someone who loves the delayed combat in modern FromSoft ARPGs (it's actually skillful there.) I remember I stuck through with the game just using save states in these worst parts and was fairly underwhelmed by the end. No idea why it's so well-regarded, the story is nearly non-existent, music is lame by RPG standards, locales are just typical indistinct JRPG fodder and the combat has aged poorly to say the least.
He breaks logic so much its a wonder why he can't hit the power button on the snes when your about to win.
He can if he uses the lightning spell to take out your power.
Spiky Tiger is like that enemy that you hate the most, but you love hating him, so you wouldn't let him get killed by someone else, just so you can still hate him!
Dear lord this boss seems like it would be a horror to battle. Good on you for beating him
This is by far the hardest boss in the game if you don't know what to do and the game just rngs you do death. For all other bosses you somehow have a back-up plan (magic, buffs etc) but here it's only the boss and your bow/sword......
The upgraded boss which can be found on the golden island is way easier than his early incarnation.....
Theres a boss on the golden island?
Would it be bad to say i could never get past the mantis boss?
Ah, I forgot that the remake was out so recently.
Fighting the Spiky Tiger is in no way Grrrreat.
See, this just adds a reason why we shouldn't be eating Frosted Flakes, especially with this tiger.
*seinfeld theme plays*
Bosses I hate returneth...this goin' be good. Real good.
The L-iteral One
Or bad. Depending on how you look at it.
Just like you, Git, I had so much trouble with this boss in the past, but now he doesn’t seem like much of a threat nowadays. Man, it brings back memories to see you talk about Spikey Tiger like this! Thanks!!
That theme is more than enough to remind players how rough this battle is. Jumping bosses with a huge hitbox "to damage the player with" are just massively unfair.
I love when bosses dies in this game, it's like you kill a tiger with a sword and start exploding lol
Back in the day, the only way I could beat this boss was to have my brother play as the second player. One of us would have the bow and heal while the other attacked with the sword and magic. It was still a pain though!
I was a wee yung 'un when I played Secret of Mana. And I never finished it because of the tiger. I beat the damn tiger, after many, many attempts, and I never went back to the game. Just hated it after that. What pissed me off about the damn thing was the dual and triple casting of a spell before I even recovered.
As brutal as Spiky was, it's the Fire Gigas that made me ragequit back in the day since I thought nothing of attack magic and getting it leveled up
Yeah, I watched this video before playing the game, therefore I knew about this guy and did a lot of grinding beforehand. Surprisingly enough, this actually allowed me to beat Spikey first try. Currently I’m still on Fire Giygas; it’s that one attack that deals over 100 damage to your character that really annoys me. Not to mention those fucking Ma goblin enemies earlier in his dungeon that can spawn extra goblins.
@@leelduttis4086 Use Freeze
@@henrie9215 Yeah, I’ve beat it since, but if I’m honest the worst boss is probably the wall (can’t remember what it’s called) because of it’s inconsistent hitbox. It crushed me SO MANY TIMES because there were times where I swear it should’ve taken damage, but didn’t.
You know who you hate even more than Spiky Tigger!
He's a evil little hedgehog that uses Debug Mode to torture his foxy friend. You know where I'm going!
It ALL makes sense now. Karma is a....
❓
This game definitely teaches you the benefit to grinding and over levelling early on.
I too have always questioned my (real) love for spicy food. Why exactly do we derive pleasure from setting our own mouths alight?
Well, the spices release happiness chemicals in our brain. That, and some of the sauces themselves are actually quite flavourful. At least until the heat burns the taste away...
I knew there was something I hated about the thumbnail because seconds later, memories of fighting that infernal tiger started playing like some kind of PTSD meme. The real icing on the cake though, is that my memories had better hit boxes than the real deal and they were terrible there too. Well they certainly made one hell of a boss, considering that it and the boss theme are the only things I remember from this game.
1:52 by god! It hit him before the analysis screen kicked in!
very fast giant enemy tiger bouncing at incredible hihg speed
jokes on you, I've negative nostalgia towards SECRET of Mana. Trials of Mana on the other hand, and Adventures of Mana...
Trials is so goooooooood I’m super hyped for the remake
@@kaimcdragonfist4803 I was surprised that Trials FINALLY got an official translation AND is getting a remake!
Several earthbound fans have just had a wave of envy course through their veins.
@@masonjones7777 ahahahahahha i completely get you and still do
What a coincidence.
I literally finished my playthrough of Secret of Mana Yesterday (ORINGINAL SNES VERSION) and this is the one boss I always dread whenever i play the game.
your characters are around 9-12 when you first enter the witch's castle and a lot o f the enemies do a ton of damage. I always find myself having to grind a few levels in this area.
A yes, the best of the gits uploads the best of the series and in one of the best topics.
Man i love this channel
Wow. So you are doing Spiky Tiger.
I should point to Thraxx from Secret of Evermore. That guy is a right jackass who is especially glaring. And his later palette swap is even toned down, what the hell.
I'm going to elaborate on what makes Thraxx stupid. See, I tried practice running him, and I was barely able to get a *SINGLE* hit (charged up, but still) off on the Heart, for 50 damage, before the bastard hit me with Acid Rain when I was at 40 HPs and the Dog was dead, and would you look at that, I'm suddenly dead from an attack that was dealing 30 damage before because it instead dealt 50 damage since it wasn't multitargeting anymore. Spiky Tiger has 520 HPs? Thraxx has SIX. HUNDRED.
One thing that makes Thraxx particularly obnoxious is that he spawns 4 Maggots. And the Maggots respawn _INFINITELY._ Even though the Maggots can cough up Petals sometimes, in addition to the EXP for potential level ups that would provide full healing, this is completely outweighed by the suffocation in the amount of room you get for evading them while beating on Thraxx's ribcage to open it. Oh, and this brings up another aspect: Thraxx's unavoidable attacks. Sometimes, he will just scream and that will knock both the Boy and the Dog around. And, of course, there's the aforementioned Acid Rain that gets casted after a certain amount of time, and it deals about 30 damage to both of your characters. You damn well better pay hawk-like attention to their HP values or you'll be finding one or both of them dead before you can do anything about it. Oh, and by the way, when you DO manage to hit Thraxx's Heart, Thraxx responds with the unavoidable scream that will knock back both characters and kick you out of his ribcage. Remember: I was doing 50 damage with a charged up attack.
Oh, and Thraxx's arms flail wildly, which still get in the way of hitting the damned ribcage from a flank. Because clearly getting past the Maggots is fun.
Really, the whole battle screams at the player to spam Flash. You do get another alchemy attack spell, Hard Ball, but you can't buy Clay from either of the 2 available reagent peddlers, so Hard Ball isn't going to deal much damage. There's also an exploit to cheese Thraxx's Heart, but that just punctuates how poorly designed Thraxx is, that a low level run has to be at Level 3, despite Thraxx being possible to reach at while Level 1.
The big insult is when the later palette swap, Coleoptera, never summons any Maggots, or any Gore Grubs for the stronger version that maintain their threat factor. Not to mention the only other boss before getting the Heal spell, the Viper Commander, is a lot more fair. Really, what the hell were they thinking with Thraxx?
Thraxx wasn't so bad. The Swamp Monster with it's 2000 (I believe) HP was the first real wall
If you didn't grind your spear to level 3 that is.
Also
Secret of Evermore is severely underrated and I LOVE seeing someone knowing of it
@@Jester_Jean What I remember of Salabog is that he wasn't fucking atrocious to deal with like Thraxx was. Though whenever my Self Imposed Challenge run gets rolling, I guess I'll find out how bad he is without alchemy spam or the Horn Spear.
Thraxx is definitely despicable though.
Oh, and yeah, I do know of SoE. For reference, I voted for it on RoahmMythril's Let's Vote #2 list, with Startropics being mentioned as my second choice.
@@MasterKnightDH You are right, I always found weird how Coleoptera never spawns Gore Grubs from the Gomi Tower (it would fit pretty well in the battle).
Thraxx is really hard even farming a lot of levels with those Skelesnails in the desert, I have heard that the only thing that the lead dev regrets is not doing a checkpoint before the battle, the last character who can save your progress is a bit far from Thraxx, it isn't fair indeed.
@@Jester_Jean Salabog isn't difficult at all but it is sometimes a long battle, just spam Flash or keep charging the Horn Spear at lvl 2/3 and it is done. The only dangerous threat is his bites attacks, it can hit like a truck if you are close.
I haven't watched you in ages, glad to see you haven't changed!
1:44 I Love this Little Detail so Much! Even though it might've not been Intentional...
I've literally watched both My unpopular oinions 1 and 2 few seconds ago, suddenly Git uploads a new video, what good timing
The dislike is Spikey Tiger's
you know the video's gonna be good if it opens with sound effects from Meteos.
To this day, I still can't beat Spikey Tiger.
Edit: After a whole 10 MONTHS, I've finally beat Spikey Tiger. Turns out I was severely underleveled. I just restarted from the beginning of Gaia's Navel, and then killed every enemy I saw, even when backtracking. If you do this, you'll be at a high enough level to kill him.
Pizza?
Is that a Shining Force reference I see?
*Dun, dun dun, duuun...*
Never fight the secret of Mana bosses without decent armor.
I know you already responded to me about this before, but *speaking of suggested episodes left undone for years*, when are we gonna get Quick Man Stage 2: Sigma Edition?
There's also Crystal Calamity in Advance Wars Dual Strike.
Everything about that stage is a fucking nightmare. Doesn't help that it also has the hardest boss in the damn game.
Hey there Git/Adam/whateveryouprefer, I don't know if you'll see this, but thank you for uploading today. I've been having a rough time recently and was really looking forward to some new YT content at the end of my day. Thank you!
The reason we eat spiky food is to get ourselves to sweat, and in turn, lower our body temperature.
You mean spicy
@@mateuszodrzywoek8658 No, they obviously want to impale themselves so that they can sweat
Played through this game on the Snes recently. I had alot of problems as well with this fight.
He's got those Plesioth hips going for him.
0:54 Never played this game before I know a good song when I hear it.
EPIIIIIIIIIIIIIC More Boss videos LIKED all of them
TVTropes.org called this a "Wake-Up Call Boss", because the techniques you need to battle seriously (like maxed-out items, armor, and weapon skills) are needed for the following bosses, but you learn them here, or fall flat.
Jeez man, I remember you saying that you wore no armour so that's why he gave you hell, next thing I know a year and a half has passed and now you cover it.
He even says that part of the reason he hated it for the first time was his fault, so he could be referencing that
@@lazykirby57 Yeah, that's most likely what he is referencing.
actually even with appropriate armor I still got my ass handed to me as I still learned from experience but there were times when I actually beat spiky tiger on the first try
@@KawaiiKaabii1993 well idk how you did it but congrats.
Weapon charge overflow Glitch is a thing in Secret of Mana :V
The thing that made this boss fight even more infuriating to me is the stupid limit of 4 healing items, almost every time I was retrying I ended taking too much damage on the way to the castle and had to spent at least one chocolate or candy before arriving on the boss and if your healing items run out you screwed to any of his stupid unavoidable attacks.
Do you have anything to say about Trials of Mana for Boss Analisys, btw?
I'd like to see a video of yours about Trials of Mana, one day.
Yes. I do rage back in the day. That fire breath stun me over and over. This boss almost turn me into demon child.
18:57 *NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANYTHING BUT THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
Yo that wall boss was the most annoying for me. Massive HP and on a timer with attacks that don't always connect? Get outta here. And also if you actually try to get in melee range he just knocks you back. On par with the double werewolf fight alone imo
There is only a timer, if you defeat the other two eyes first, which you do not have to do but the duo wolfs are surely bullshit
There a hack in Romhacking.net forum, called Turbo. In that package hack, one of the options is that you can manually block (you can pick and choose which options to enable). That pretty much makes Spikey Tiger into a joke, even at Lv10. Unless you have a snail reflex, you should be able to guard against all melee attacks by Spikey Tiger, meaning the only thing that can hurt you is Fire Bouquet. Well, the AI is still as dumb as always and killed with 2 hits or so.
It also fixes LOTS of bugs. And enables all these neat features (re-translation, ability to control your running direction, no more AI getting stuck in the screen, equipping 2 weapons for fast switching, much faster weapon/magic grinding, etc).
This boss has always reminded me of Siger from Oracle of Seasons. I know this one came first but I played them the other way round.
You should do a Boss Analysis of Metal Slug, that series has some finely crafted fights (as long as you don't mind RNG).
Ah yes, good old Spikey. I actually recently replayed this game again (not the remake, I refuse to get that abomanation) and also had some trouble with it haha. Barrels and right use of items helped a lot though. Fun stuff.
'the remake was a bit dissapointing'
Finally someone who doesn't shit on every aspect of the remake due to nostalgia blindness
Its odd, I had almost no issue with this boss when i first played through the game years ago but now.... oh GOD replaying it recently this thing was a nightmare. I don't know if i just got lucky, or was so hopelessly lost when I first played the game i ended up over leveled.
And another early Christmas present for me!
Its November you fuck
@@based980 That's what makes it early.
The bells, the bells...
Everything else aside, I kinda like the gate fakeout. I don't think it was their intention, probably just not wanting to make an animation for that or something?
Much like how Secret of Mana was one of Git's first RPGs and he has a lot of nostalgic bias towards it, while still recognizing its flaws, Borderlands 2 was one of my first RPGs.
In my opinion, after having gotten into BL2 again, it still mostly holds up, but there are some items that are a bit overpowered, even game-breakingly so in some cases (Grog Nozzle, Unkempt Harold, the Sham, the Bee, etc.). Also, with the right gear, Salvador can absolutely face-tank everything easily. UVHM and the OP levels can also be frustrating with their huge enemy life bars, inconsistently-applied enemy health regen, and the fact that they force you to rely on Slag to deal decent damage, not to mention that enemies have very powerful damage-over-time effects, meanwhile their health regen is strong enough to out-heal any damage-over-time effect you give them...
UVHM and even the OP levels can be fun with the right builds (Melee Krieg, Pistol Salvador with Grog Nozzle and Lady Fist/Unkempt Harold, Sniper Zer0, etc.), but if you don’t have enough damage to properly deal with enemy life regen or you aren't tanky enough to shrug off a few stray bullets, you will suffer.
the very first i played this game, i got through spikey tiger with little problem.
it was the underground palace with all its ma goblins and chess knights that got to me
Spiky Tiger is sooo much harder than every single other boss in this game
This is truly a game people only like due to nostalgia and/or playing co-op with friends.
Trials, Sword and Legend for the win!
1:57 it looks like a Tigrex from monster hunter
Kind of yes...man I need to hunt it in MHW
I really want to see more hardest bosses
It’d be great if you’d do an analysis on Contra bosses some day.
Does anyone know which video it is where he's making fun of Veld from Fire Emblem Thracia 776? I can't find it :(

@@MasterKnightDH Thank you so much
Spikey Chonker
I consider this boss the most difficult from Secret of Mana because you don't have spells yet. Sure, Secret of Evermore had some hard bosses too (Thraxx was a huge difficulty spike and Salabog was a tedious and unnecessary long battle) but nothing like this tiger, if it traps you in a corner, it is over.
I'll take Spiky Tiger over Thraxx. At least you can repeatedly hit Spiky Tiger without some exploit bullshit, you don't have to put up with infinitely respawning minions, and Neko is near enough the boss battle location. Spiky Tiger, while having his bullshit hitboxes and abusive attrition ability, I don't know how he traps you to death.
@@MasterKnightDH The dog has to deal with the maggots in the thraxx battle and make sure you get the petals that they drop (I don't recall if they rarely can drop nectar right now), the scream of Thraxx always deals 5 hp regardless of your level and you can ignore the claws but it is a good source of exp to level up and fully restoring your health points if you kill them in the middle of the battle. Acid Rain is the only dangerous threat and catch all new players off guard.
Of course, I'm not defending the difficulty of Thraxx but I always felt that the Spiky Tiger is more lame and hard. At least, you know that you don't have to worry about your dog because he is always a powerful bulldozer in Evermore, however in Mana, your companions don't help you almost nothing with the Tiger and using Cup of Wishes is a waste in that fight because they die in a few seconds again.
We need a giant chair boss fight
Something better.
You get to fight the Statue of Liberty in Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma
I mean
"Better"
All of the new fights sucked lol and the different director really toned the game down in it's difficulty.
more like grind endlessly cause dog I love the grind in any rpg
Spikey tiger’s going to be a Dead By Daylight killer soon with those attacks.
Bouncin' *is* what tigers do best after all.
Is that the only boss from the game you hate?
That's what probably would happen if you put three stupid kids fighting a goddamn tiger xD
Spikey Tiger looks like Shere Khan mixed with a komodo dragon.
This explains why this was rated hellishly low.
Anyway, to me the only hard boss in this game was that mantis at the beginning. UNFAIR STUFF!!! Good thing you cannot die but man, did it almost dissuade me from keep on playing.
Did you ever played E.V.O. search for eden?
A few bosses there are ridiculous... stunlock, crazy damage and more stunlock... :D
the bosses are pretty easy lmao
I want more ):
Between this and SF1 Sagat, Tigers just aren't very grrrreat at playing fair.
Hated this one just as much as you, a better showing than anything else just how broken magic was in that game. It's not actually the only magic-using one you fight without it though- you still have beat Tonpole/Biting Lizard to get Undine, but despite healing himself to full twice he's much more manageable than Spiky.
Remakes are nice, but we could really use a new Mana game with all the earlier problems ironed out.
Did they bring it back this way in the remake?
I admit this boss gave me a hard time. But the last time i played this game, i leveled up quite a bit and i ate tiger sandwich out of him. :)
Screw this boss...I always debate starting a new file because I know this boss will always give me hell no matter what playthrough I'm going through.
Can you do one for anime or racing bosses
This spiky tiger... piss me off just by looking at it.
When you need a item spam... you know the boss is trash... bad boss design
0/10 BELONGS IN THE TRASH!
This game made me gave up... then i played Sword Of Mana... what a blast!
😂 it was really great.
Lub Lub is Rey from Star Wars?
Why didn't you show the K rool rip-off in the remake?
Yep, Spikey Tiger is beyond Nintendo Hard. This right here is borderline ATLUS hard (if you've played any game by ATLUS, you'd understand).
The ps4 version hopefully fixed many problems in the snes version
but it made almost all of the music worse sadly, good thing the game lets you use the old music
some months ago I beat this game with my older brother (I was the protagonist)
tbh the tiger didn't change much in the remake either. Still a buggy mess with the same bs. and I was playing with another friend. Same bs happened.
Tbh it wasnt so hard for me and my sister on spikey tiger but still made us try more than once. Probs harder for you since you were solo, and we all ai is trash. Unless its from chess.
Nerfing Spikey Tiger is like nerfing Yakuza (Metroid Fusion) or Whitney's Miltank.
Possibly my favorite feature of these videos is how algorithm unfriendly they are. Nothing here appeals to the general audience.
What an obnoxious boss battle. No wonder you hate it so much.
We would see a "first boss rematch" review again? I want to suggest Kuze from Yakuza 0, i think that you'll like the franchise.
My tactics for this fuck?
-Fire Enchant and Spam Fire Magic-
Don't get killed.
I remeber that he was rather annoying and just long rather than hard and I'm not saying it through nostalgia cuz I didn' had SNES as a child.
I played it first time in May of 2018 on my SNES mini.
Just fought this guy the other day. I agree he is very poorly designed. But I think the Fire Demon boss you fight shortly after is designed even worse. He hits you repeatedly with magic and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Fire Gigas can be spammed with Undine's attack spells into oblivion. Of course, that makes him an ironically tamer version of a boss from Secret of Evermore named Verminator, an asshole who sits on top of some crates out of reach of melee attacks while he gets around to showering you with *_HIDEOUSLY_* overpowered Alchemy spells you have no defense against, and then also demanding you cheap him back with things like Crush/Sting chaincasting to get through his obscene 3500 HPs.
Yeah, you know what?? Having actually looked over things, yeah, Fire Gigas is indeed despicable. In fact, I would say NOW that he's actually worse than Verminator, who wasn't invincible to all attacks. Verminator could still pull burst damage KO bullshit and you couldn't do leveling up to wall his crap, but Fire Gigas just plain involves no valid gameplay beyond being called out for not grinding actively.
@@MasterKnightDH Interesting you message me. Just recently beat this SNES game again. I know the game development was seriously rushed and had problems, but some of the bosses are horribly designed and can only be defeated with magic. Infact after the tiger boss, there's practically no point in leveling up weapons because magic just carries you through the whole game. It's really broken.
