DIY Screen Burning System for Screen Printing

  • This is a video showing how I burn and wash out screens using a very simple DIY system. You don't need a fancy set-up to get results burning screen printing screens.
    The light source is a 20w LED blacklight, suspended 16" above the screen. I use a piece of 1/4" glass with the edges sanded smooth to hold the transparency down. Make sure it doesn't block UV light.
    Exposure time is 1 min 40 secs with Chromablue emulsion.
    The "washout booth" is a basic plastic utility sink with a silver tarp around it.
    I use a garden spray nozzle hooked to washing machine faucets.
    I use a 6 gallon air compressor and a nozzle to clear any remaining water from the design after washing out. If the water residue dries in the screen it can prevent ink from passing through.
    A box fan speeds drying and a cabinet to store/dry screens horizontally after coating with emulsion eliminates uneven drying.
