I felt the funeral scene was such an important new touch bc it illustrates the empathy/ humanity Zuko possesses. If you notice everyone is almost congratulating Iroh on his sons death, that he should feel honored bc it’ll go down in fire nation history, and Zuko does at first too. Then he turns back and genuinely comforts Iroh with an anecdote that makes his lost son human, not just a war pawn. It’s a beautiful sentiment

I love how Leaves From The Vines turned from a theme of loss with Lu Ten to a theme for Iroh and Zuko. No, I'm not crying you are 😭
I think the build up of Zuko and Iroh’s relationship is so the betrayal at the end of the second season is gonna hurt even more 😅

The past week I’ve been walking around my house just going “HE RANNN”
A lot of changes to the original story made in this episode and my knee jerk reaction was to dislike them but once I let go of the grip nostalgia had on me and looked at things through the lens of this particular retelling…I liked them. Bumi is so different here but in the context of this adaption I think it works and rather enjoyed this take.
And, as always, ANYTHING with Iroh and Zuko is just 🔥 I literally gasped and started tearing up immediately when Iroh says that everything he needs is on the boat AND THE MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND. They can’t keep doing this to my heart 😂
Another aspect of this episode that had the internet in an uproar was Katara and Soka being the ones in the tunnel and it “not making sense” but in this version I really don’t think they have laid any real groundwork for Katara and Aang and shifting that love to just a more all encompassing “unconditional love” I think was rather fitting.

Bumi is hardened by the war. He is bitter and jaded, and the world’s only hope was his best friend who didn’t assume his responsibilities. Granted it was an accident. Bumi has had to make the hard decisions while he was sleeping.

This bumi on some levels makes more sense than the original.
Shows the bitternes and jaded haeart of someone who has suffered.
Not just him but also his people having to make the hard choices.
Not only that but also your best friend has responsibilities and didnt come through he may have been able to stop it.
In my opinion it feels too soon for Aang and katara to have their moments, I know that's how it was in the anime but because of the length of the adaptation it makes more sense for them not to focus on their relationship. I mean you can see how he is struggling with the guilt and responsibility of being the avatar, and because there are only a few episodes in the season it made sense for him to think of Katara as a friend for now and then hopefully in season 2 their relationship can develop more. That's one of the reasons I was ok with monk gyatso being the reason aang goes out of his avatar state, since at that point he barely had a relationship with katara and yes he could relate to her but his love for gyatso made more sense to me. I think season two will make up my mind about whether I really like the show or not.

I am really surprised you guys liked this episode based on your reaction to other story changes. There was some awesome stuff with Zuko and Iroh, and I actually liked the Bumi storyline. But I couldn't hang with the changes to how they made it out of the secret love tunnel. Ah well, they sang the song, and the badgermole looked appropriately fierce. Still, episode 6 is my fave.
