Imagine something like planetside 2 but like invading north korea or mainland china, making your own battleplans and following it

  • @-0rbital-
    @-0rbital- Před 3 lety

    This is really fascinating!
So what kind of games would you make using an entire planet? Strategy games? Or could you possibly make several games that all take place in the same world?
Like a strategy game involving countries at war. But also, in that way, you could have players be soldiers who want to play a shooter type game.
And, between the big strategy game and the smaller shooter part of the game, there could be some kind of tactical battle game where you command the units in those battles?
And all of these could be integrated into one overarching game. So victory would be partly determined by the strategy at the country level, but there would also be battles that would be determined at the tactical level, and also individual soldiers, who are your FPS players, would have an effect on the battle too.
So your opponent could have a better plan than you, but your soldiers could still win the battle for you, or vice versa.
I can’t even imagine the difficulties in making such an MMO, but damn would it be cool! You could attract players from all different genres of games to all play in one game world.
Don’t know if this is possible now, but someday it will be.

The problem with "planet-scale" games, is that they only look good from far distances, anytime you get on the ground, you see how buggy and low quality they are.
Thats not a bad thing for a plane simulator or for the military.
But for consumers, i think everyone stills prefer a handcrafted terrain, even if it's something like only 300km².
I guess we are a decade or two before even the military can get their hands on something planet-scale that looks good on the ground.

do you imagine how much such games cost? VBS4 license, if I’m not mistaken is 16000$/year. And you cannot buy it unless you are a goverment. Since VBS3 there is no personal edition available for everyone. It is only available for academic purposes, so either a university or military academy. And when it was available, I think it was 500$. Which does not include all of the features of standard vbs. Some features from VBS come to Arma in one way ir another.

This is really interesting. However, in the gaming world, a planetary scale environment, given current technology, is perhaps a little too large for any single mission/battle/scenario. Imagine having to travel for several hours to get to the AO. This wouldn’t be a problem in single player as the player could teleport but multiplayer wouldn’t be feasible. I discovered this when commenting about how it would be great if DCS used MSFS whole world environment and I was set straight by a couple of game devs (not foe either product, I hasten to add - the fact they were game devs just means they’d already thought about the possibilities). Still, I’d love to be able to fly anywhere in the world in my DCS F16 (fuel permitting! :D).

Engineering achievement hype aside ... large empty maps are not a silver bullet for a good game. Giant autogenerated maps will always have artefacts and glitches breaking your immersion. Play microsoft flight sim and imagine being infantry on that ... probably not so much breath taking with the ground full of glitches and auto-quessed textures on buildings. EVERY detail will be off when you come in close, there is a reason why all these trailers never show any urban environment and I personally do not believe arma4 or any commercial "game" product will have planetary scale + infantry combo without some major limitations anytime soon. Maybe once the content generator neural nets become available (those experiments you can find on youtube where AI is "dreaming-up" content to speed-up game development process like modeling/texturing whole houses and other assets from simple text instructions) and is applied on-the-fly to dream-up those details when you get close. But not sure how close we are to that, those nets take many seconds/minutes to come-up with a single building today.
