The Wild Life is a 1984 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film directed by Art Linson and written by Cameron Crowe. The film stars Chris Penn, Lea Thompson, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Jenny Wright, Eric Stoltz, Rick Moranis, Hart Bochner, and Randy Quaid.
The Wild Life was theatrically released in the United States on September 28, 1984, by Universal Pictures. While the film is not a direct sequel to Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), it was seen by many as a spiritual sequel due to Crowe's involvement in both and the films' shared universe/style of being R-rated comedy/dramas set amongst young people finding their way in Southern California.
Saw it in the theater as a kid. Soundtrack by Eddie Van Halen. Underrated movie.
One of my all-time favorites
Most underrated 80s teen movie. Have no idea why this one doesn't get the love so many other teen movies of the same era get. So happy you did filming locations for the Wild Life! Great job Kurt!
Zero syndication and zero streaming/DVD capablilities
@@andrewcrenshaw2459 so weird. I check Tubi periodically for it because it seems like a movie they would have available...nope.
I just torrented and watched it for the first time. It was kinda pointless.
agreed
I don't necessarily think it's underrated for anyone who knows & loves '80s teen movies -- Perhaps overlooked, since Fast Times, Risky Business, & Breakfast Club take up most oxygen.
💖 the 80s ruled!
Oh yeah, with payphones and cheap prices.
The fact that they constantly tear down these iconic movie locations isn't casual and is totally bogus dudes.
I thought I was the only one that would remember this movie, nice job Kurt. Chris Penn was awesome in this movie. One of the greatest 80"s comedies ever made. Thank you again Kurt for making these video"s for all of us to enjoy. This movie came out the same year I graduated high school. Some of the best memories of my life. Keep up the good work buddy, and best wishes to you and your family. Stay safe my friend.
Your comment about things being bad when you find the lead singer of Fear sitting on your couch was hilarious.
Agreed. I will be laughing about that for weeks.
Never saw this movie but had to watch the locations anyways!
Glad I’m not the only one that remembers this great piece of 80’s history I actually saw it in a theater in Las Vegas when it first came out.
Thanks for the upload Kurt you rock!
I quote this movie more than any other. Back in the early 90's, I used to work at a local video store. I had my boss order me a vhs copy of The Wild Life, because I couldn't find it anywhere. It cost $60, no lie. I've since bought it on dvd, but I still have my vhs copy, in mint condition.
Dude you're the best. I loved this movie. I went and saw it in the movie theater with a friend when it came out in 1984, oh God back then i was 16. For a 16 year old back in 1984 it was totally awesome. Eddie Van Halen's music he wrote for the soundtrack was killer. This movie kinda flew under the radar and i don't think it was that popular but for me it was perfect especially back in 1984. There was a lot of recognizable actors in it too. Very cool movie man it's definitly an underrated 80's classic. 1984 man what a year , my first real job working at the most popular pizza joint in town , that summer was killer.....making good money, partying on my days off with buddies and that was the year i lost my virginity LOL. And to top it all off i bought my first car at the end of the summer for 500 bucks. An orange 1974 Dodge Challenger. That car was awesome. Thanks for the memories Kurt!
Awesome 👍 research.....
Best channel for 80’s nostalgia. Also a great host that takes us through these great Movie Film locations.
Your videos are never forced. Just effortless cool vibes.
One could even describe them as being...casual? 0:10.
This made my day!!
No way I asked and got it ,you rock!!
Awesome I loved this movie, cool that Eddie VanHalen wrote the tune Donut City for movie soundtrack.
The Wild Life was my Fast Times! Loved loved loved this movie! Thank you!
Underrated movie, great video as usual.
It’s casual Kurt! Thank you so much! This is one of my all time favorites. One of the most underrated 80’s films with one of the most epic casts ever! 🎸
This was a great movie. I have it on DVD. I love that you are doing some forgotten 80s gems. Modern Girls would be a fun one too.
Agreed....Modern Girls would be Appreciated.
Modern Girls is so hard to find! I have the soundtrack on cassette but not the movie. I love But Not Tonight by Depeche Mode.
Jim and his nunchucks.
One of my favorites. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Been waiting for this one!!!
I love your videos!!
Kurt- ❤ this video man. Your research and attention to detail is just awesome. As we have communicated in the past i'm 1978 you 1979 born. LA plus the Valley and their movies plus TV shows was a huge part of my life. Seeing these locations is a serious reminisce trip and i love it all. So thank you so much from the bottom.of my ❤ and don't ever stop what you do 👌🏼👌🏼💯💯☀️☀️
I started my teen years in '82 ... simply the great time to be alive!. Great video, thanks :)
Wow! Excellent!
That was great ! It's amazing how dynamic LA is. Even suburban Dublin where I grew up ( the area was built in the early 1960's ), the only change to the housing stock ( 3 up, 2 down semi-detached houses with a garage ) might be the addition of an extension upon the garage roof, or a storm door on the porch. Everything otherwise looks the same for houses. The local shops ( I guess in America it would be called a small strip mall ) haven't changed their purpose (eg the hairdressers in still the hairdressers), but have new owners/ names. In LA it seems everything gets remodelled/ rebuilt every 30/ 40 years or so ...
I very dimly remember seeing this movie, but had completely forgotten about it. Will have to try to look it up again.
Love this movie. Used to have it on VHS
Such an under-seen movie......It's Casual
The slightly darker toned '80s teen flicks like The Wild Life, Valley Girl, & Last American Virgin are the best
Hey, Kurt! I love The Wild LIfe! Thanks for doing the locations for this movie, I mentioned it to you during one of your live streams, but I'm sure I couldn't have been the only one, since this is one of the classics from the 80's with great supporting actors who were iconic in the decade, such as Rick Moranis, Hart Bochner, Michael Bowen, Randy Quaid, Jack Kehoe, Jenny Wright, Angel Salazar and Ben Stein among others.
I remember being up north at my uncle’s cottage in Ontario,Canada and renting the VHS video of this movie and the original “Terminator” in the summer of 1985, two great ‘80’s flicks. I was 14 then and I’m 52 now. Great video, the good ‘ol days, when North America was North America, everyone spoke the same language and you could leave your windows open at night. I’m glad that I grew up then.
Awesome movie. I saw Chris Penn jogging down the Beach in Santa Monica around "95".Thanks for video man.
Chris Penn seems like a good guy but his brother Sean Penn is a POS!
Me too ‘97!
He had an apartment on Ocean Ave.
@@Kthomasritchie : I think that’s the place where he lost it.
Thank you for showing these locations! Huge fan of this film since I first saw it in 1988. Edward Van Halen did the soundtrack too! Love it!
This is greatest movie ever!
Finally 40 yrs later some recognition
i cannot belive no one knows about it
Awesome job!
One of my favorites from the 80's. Very underrated. The EVH score is classic (mostly original material)!
Wowzers... Never did see .. big stars. THE ERA... Gotta See.... Great Work....
"Have a maple bar brother, they're fresh" gets me every time. 😂 I love this movie. I saw it when I was 14 in 1984. I'm pretty sure my sisters and I snuck in to see it. We did that all the time with R rated movies (Porkies). I have the VHS and DVD of this movie. So glad you covered it. 😊
Great job Kurt! An 80's classic.
One of my all-time favourite movies. Good job. So much nostalgia here...
Torrance High Class of 95 here! Attended while they filmed Beverly Hills 90210 and got to hang with the cast a bit.
YES! I've been waiting on this one for a minute and you didn't disappoint. This movie doesn't get the '80s classic credit it so richly deserves. Fast Times at Ridgemont High gets all the shine (it's awesome for sure), but The Wild Life resonated with me a heck of a lot more. I was able to relate to Jim and the characters reminded me of people I knew in real life. Great job Kurt and thanks for reconnecting us with these memories of yesteryear.
P.S. I know some may think it's blasphemous, but I thought Jenny Wright was hotter than Phoebe Cates.
Yes Jenny wright so much prettier
Phoebe not so much to me and Jim was a cutie
Great soundtrack too, lots of early EVH riffs.
THIS just made my day!! I love The Wild Life. Thanks Kurt. You rock, bro.
Loved this movie
Tons of fun thx!
Amazing Kurt, I've seen this film a very long time ago so it was awesome to remember it all. Excellent video as always, looking forward to your next one matey
Great movie
Seen it in the movies in 84-85 when I was 13
Love the Wild Life!
I loved that movie
I looked for the dounut shop on google
I’m an Eric Stoltz fan and never seen this movie. That’s kinda embarrassing. Thanks for the video.
Definitely gonna sit down and watch this movie now ! 80s rocked 🎉
Amazing cast. Fantastic soundtrack including some original music by Eddie Van Halen. Whole bunch if celebrity cameos: Nancy Wilson of Heart, Dick Rude,Lee Ving , and Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones. Written by Cameron Crowe as a spiritual sequel to Fast Times. So much going for this film. Crowe tried to do something similar to Fast Times, no real plot or central conflict just a snapshot of group of young peoples lifes over a short period. It just dosen't work for me.
So which one do u like from the two movies
Nancy Wilson who was married to Crowe was also in fast times, she was credited as beautiful girl in car , the one that laughed at Brad in his captain hook uniform
YOU ARE THE MAN.. One of my absolute favorite hidden gems. You are absolutely correct. Not too many people talk about this “Should be classic” it holds up right on the side of “Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Pretty in pink, fast Times at Ridgemont high ” if you are a fan of any of these movies. This is a must see. Thank you for this one. I love this flick.
Thanks! TX.
I really love that you describe how you were able to find the locations!
This movie is great, cult classic me & my friends still watch over & over..Eddie Van Halen did the soundtrack
Great video as usual and awesome film. I was able to watch some of the movie being filmed at the bowling alley down the street where I lived on a street called Grismer. My family used to go to that bowling alley almost every weekend. The director was looking for extra's but we couldn't hang out till late because it was a school night. Missed opportunity. Also another side note the soundtrack is the closest thing to an Eddie Van Halen solo album we'll ever get. I found most of it on CZcams.
Watched this flick last weekend. Love it more than Fast Times by a mile.
It’s so much better fast times didn’t appeal this one I love
One of my favorites 👍
Your stuff is the best filming locations channel!!!! GREAT JOB!!!!!
I first saw this in 1994 when I rented it out of curiosity. When I heard Chris Penn say "it's casual," I discovered it was the forgotten movie from 1984 that I saw advertised and wanted to see but could not.
I had to show my interest in "The Wild Life" and support for putting films on discs by buying both a DVD and then a Blu Ray when they were released.
This movie along with Revenge of the Nerds and Bachelor Party were so fun to watch.
Eddie VanHalens background music ....thats some of my favorite EVH stuff...
Great footage man on Pacific Blvd they also passed by Jc Penney which is the only last remaining Building that's stands there as of today. I think the bank of America closed down last year. Keep up the good work man love your videos 👍
Wow you got me on this one Kurt, I grew up in the 80’s and feel like I saw every movie that came out that decade but I somehow missed this one. I’d thought that I might have seen it but I def haven’t. Nice job on the locations tho dude.
I have never seen this so totally going to watch it. Love Eric Stoltz!
This maybe the first movie with “fist bumps”.
I almost forgot about this movie , it was definitely underrated. Good video....
....👍 ❤....
Great video! One of my favorite movies. A friend of mine worked on it and has some cool stories. Do you know about the hidden message in the credits???
No....can you give a hint??
Great movie!! Loved the theme song and video by Bananarama (unfortunately, there's only a snippet of it in the movie) Thank you for an excellent video!!
Never seen this film but I’m gonna watch this video anyway cos I just like your videos!
I love this flick...watch it all the time! I never noticed in the hundreds of times I've seen it that Rick Moranis's hair kept changing....haha...shame on me
Mark! I’m guilty as charged on missing the Moranis hair changes too. That’s a huge takeaway thanks to Mr. Crucial! 👍
1:31. As soon as I saw that Woolworth store, I knew it was Huntington Park! I used to live there in the mid 90s! I remember during the Rodney King riots that place was a dangerous mess.
The commentary track for this movie is worth a listen.
Awesome loved the Wild life !
Ty brotha!!!! I remember i asked if you were gonna do a movie location for this one a couple year's ago?
Luv this movie and I haven’t seen that Spuds shirt in years that is so awesome to see it!
I love this rare film. I haven’t seen it since the 90’s on VHS 📼 As far as I can find it’s never had a DVD 📀 or Blu Ray release
Great detective work Kurt. :) Sadly this movie is below the radar for a lot of people. Even Cameron Crowe rarely talks about this movie. I loved it.
Dang forgot about this movie. I watched it when I was like 10 and remember being creeped out by Randy Quaid as Charlie. It was the first time the concept of a war veteran having PTSD was introduced to me and it tripped me out.
Omg I had the exact same hat and t shirt he’s wearing. Wow….memories!
Amazing job using Google Maps to find that location. You never fail to disappoint. I will have to give this movie a watch now. I've watched a few Weird Science comicon interviews and Michael-Smith mentioned this movie a few times. Thanks!
you know so much about your city great work as usual
This is so funny to see. In 1984 I was going to El Camino College located in Torrance. A friend and I had a night class together and on our way home we passed by the donut shop while the movie crew was preparing to film the cop car driving through the donut scene. We stood on the corner of little Sepulveda ( which is what it’s known) and crenshaw. He and I kept yelling if they needed extras to die in the scene!!!!🤣🤣🤣
Truly great memories!!!
Chi chi get the yayo! A year after scarface was Angel Salazar😊
cool vid, and interesting you made this video, i just watched the movie few nights ago! lolz.. been going back, watching a lot of old 80s flicks, some late 70s ones ☮
I loved this movie! It’s never been made available on streaming so the only way I can found you can watch it is to buy the DVD.
Your welcome!
Yeah finally you did one on this movie filmed in my ol home town filmed in Huntington Park 😎 thanks again keep up the good work 👍 hey Kurt FYI did you know back in the early 80s h.p. was infamous for up n coming punk band's to play at gigs here. You tube has a news clip from (1984) where punkers went on a rampage riot. Over a at a ballroom dance club. Some well known band's were there playing check it out 😉
The building manager was The Colonel from Boogie Nights
Thanks Kurt 🇮🇪
I just watched this movie again about a month ago and discovered this when I read the trivia about it on IMDB:
"In the scene where Tommy jumps out of the window the music score by Eddie Van Halen is the exact recording of the music used in Back To The Future when Marty puts the cassette in the Walkman to wake up George McFly."
That and the fact that The Wild Life starred the original Marty McFly (Eric Stoltz) and the one and only Lorraine Baines/McFly/Tannen (Lea Thompson). Just a couple BTTF connections :)
got this on dvd finally years ago
I saw this multiple times on VHS in the 90s. Chris penn doing this movie with Eric Stolz and Lea Thompson.
AWESOME!!! Please do American Graffiti & Losin' It!!!
never seen this but awesom work here dude !!! love it, and WHY did everything look better in the 80s??? like every frame u had compared, looked better then, looked more natrual more friendly ..
